  • The person who directed this is the same person who directed the Talking Head's video "And She Was." Check it out. You will see the similarities.

  • she is still on Sesame Street

  • Alison Bartlett very good on Sesame Street... Are there any plans to put her back on the set of SS?

  • On a side note, it kinda sounds like The Cars.

  • i seen sonia manzano ( maria), Bob Mc Grath ( Bob), Emilio Delgado ( luis), Roscoe Orman ( gordon) and Alison Bartlett - O'Reily ( gina) in person last june.

  • OMG, it's been OVER 20 YEARS since I last saw and heard this, yet over the years I've remembered the theme tune as if I had heard it only yesterday - I remembered the 2 women singing and the black and white lips footage... isn't it weird the things that stick with you over the years?!

  • Hard to believe that Alison (Gina) was only 16 or 17 when she did this.

  • which one is she

  • Wow, she looks so adult you can't even tell? She's the Caucasian in the red shirt. Haha.

  • OOOOOOH MAANNN...i was looking for this like 4 years ago, and me and my homeboy searched for it with no luck...ooooh maaaaannnn..... this song used to scare me for some reason...not quite sure ...but THANKS FOR UPLOADING...OOOH MAAAAN

  • wow..i can see why this scared you....

  • Anybody have a year for this?

  • I think it was 1988

  • I don think it was, i was born that year and remember watching it - earky 90's i reckon

  • It really scares me to see how many people here don't understand the point of the song.

It's not really "teaching" anything, IMO. It's just a song expressing something that kids can relate to: the idea that everything "fun" you want to do gets told, "NO!" And however much we need the word, "no," that's frustrating.

This was one of my favourite songs from SST back in the day, so I'm glad to find it here.

  • I agree; even as a teenager, the word "no" is probably the most frustrating word in the world.

  • I is a catchy song...loved it when i was younger, yet it used to scare me a bit...

  • Yeah, me too. I always thought the NO was scary for some reason and that it was trying to get everyone.

  • this would be a great youtube poop.

    i can imagine it now.

    No DINNER

    No SPAGHETTI

    No PINGAS

    No TOASTERS

    Etc.

  • @zacharystrobelshow What's a pinga?

  • @SaiyanLady: Watch AoStH. People have taken Robotnik's "SnooPING AS usual" comment & shortened it to PINGAS, which is thought to be the term for a male's sexual organ in Spanish.

  • @TherealRNO Ahhh! Thanks for clarifying that for me.

  • @SaiyanLady: No problem.

  • Thank you! I loved this one, I haven't seen it since I was very young!

  • I still remember this song from when I was little. I loved this song and I still remember the chorus.

    Thanks for posting it! :)

  • why is sesame teaching children the word is no?

Everyone one should know that the bird is the word!

A ba ba bird bird bird bird is the word a ba ba bird bird bird the bird is the word!

  • Why are they teaching kids the word no? There are words like YES and MAYBE and COOKIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yeah, now this brings back memories. Awesome.

  • I loved this as a child and it brings back very happy feelings to hear it. It didn't bother me that they were saying no, it still sounded fun and catchy and I love Maria and Gina!

  • Ah, yes. Sesame Street's way of imposing totalitarianism on the young crowds. Total control, total obedience, total peace...

Just kidding. But I remember seeing this skit in a "flashback" episode where Maria finds one of the props used in this skit for sale at Oscar's Garage Sale.

  • @RebeliousMoose I remember that episode too.

  • God this clip would piss me off when I was little. My mom would sing it at me when I didn't get what I wanted.

  • That is very mean of her to do that to you

  • i kind of like this song with the word no in it now. But when my dog won't stop barking i tell her no to get used to the song. No bailey

  • this is not something you should teach a kid to say lol! this is y so many kids are disobeident now a days!!!

  • I thought that it looked a little funny how Gina was doing a teasing look at 1:23 when both she and Maria are singing and teaching the muppets on the skit and the audience the word "no" and what it means. It feels like Gina is singing and saying "No Teasing" but, she is teasing at 1:23.

  • 1:19 lmao is is just me or are they saying "no's no fun!"?

  • your right they are saying no's no fun

  • I loved this song as a kid!!!! Its sooo dated now!

  • this was my shit

  • Comment removed

  • I love this song now but i hated it when i was 2

  • NOOOOO!!!

  • I forgot how hot Maria was.

  • Oh wow I remember this!

  • i never want anyone to say that word again!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • no worries ;)

  • this song made me angry when i was little. i dont like the color red because it is negative and reminds me of this. red means stop, wrong, no, bad, and danger.

  • I feel like someone said it's 1988 or 1989. I remember this song VIVIDLY from when I was a little kid in the early to mid 90s. It SCREAMS 80s! The part I remember most is Prarie Dawn at the stop light, Gina making the teasing face, and Big Bird swinging his feet. lol

  • Whoa, Maria and Gina were babes!

  • I agree; and in my defense, I am not a perv!

This was a cool song when I was little though. For me anyways. . .

  • This song is probably from the early 90s because Elmo is in it and Elmo was first introduced in the early 90s.

  • I liked this song a lot as a kid because it reminded me of how often i sometimes heard my mom and dad tell me "no" - maybe making that kind of connection was the point.

  • now i find this song a litte weird

  • this song never gets old. But What did this song mean? can someone please tell me the point of what this song means?

  • to teach children about the word NO. isn't it pretty obvious!?!? I saw this clip on Sesame English on EBS English this morning. So funny to see it again after all these years. Then i got it stuck in my head. The word is NO!!!!!!

  • stop scaring me damit

  • i kind of like this song now but. This song makes no sense it says no to everything this song is pointless what is this song supposed to teach kids?

  • I also really like this song too. If I were to take a guess, maybe this song is supposed to teach kids that "no" is a very powerful word sometimes. For example, if there was a young kid who was drawing on the wall with a crayon, and his/her parents shouted "no" to them would help the kid understand that they're not supposed to draw on the wall after the kid hears the word "no" being said to them. (I might be wrong but, this is just a guess).

  • i know this teaches kids about the word no but? Why is it that when some of us saw this on sesamestreet when we were small it made us cry why?

  • Maybe the reason why this skit made some kids cry is because, it was probably confusing little kids that the kids are not allowed to have any fun in life since Gina and Maria are saying "no" to a lot of fun things here. Like, they're saying no to "biking" "swimming", "hiking", "camping", "laughing", "talking", and especially "hiding" where Ernie and Bert were hiding from 1:27-1:33 since hide and seek is a fun game for little kids. So I guess this skit was making kids think there's no more fun.

  • yea i mean thats just sad i jjustc ry because the volume was really loud and it scared me back then. Thanks for the answer

  • I don't know that I CRIED, per se, but I wanted to know why Gina and Maria were getting all up in my face...

  • i hate this song why do they still have it take it off

  • I was gonna show this to my Kindergarten class (we just learned the word no) but it is way too '80's! I can't believe I thought this was cool! LOL

  • Just show it to them!!! Forget what decade it's from!!!

  • So classic 80's, A-Ha meets preschool!!! Look how young Maria is. Do you realize that next year Sesame Street will be 40? I was six going on 7 when they aired the 20th anniversary special and now it is going to be 40!!! Wow!!!

  • really, made i can enjoy and i saw maria up close about a year ago. she was different than was then. :)

  • I love Maria.

She was clearly one of the best singers on the show.

  • My favorite song!

  • This was one of my favorites as a kid!! Aaahhhh....back when Sesame Street was good!!

  • Thank you so damn much. I haven't seen this since I saw the episode when it was brand new in the 80's.

  • This used to creep me out when I was a kid. My mom chased me around the house to get me to understand the meaning of the song because she thought I just didn't like hearing the word "no," but it was really because I thought the song and video were scary.

  • LMAO!!! dats funny ;)

  • that song made me cry im glad i don't have to see it on tv anymore

  • This video scared the shit out of me when I was little...I can't believe I found this!

  • I remember this. =)

  • this song says no to alot off stuff but thankfully they didn't say no to posting sesame street videoes on you tube in the future.

  • the grey and black lips said no so thats why i cried and hated this song so much because i hated that word back then when i was 2 but it is ok for me now

  • i used to hate this song when i was younger cause when the black and grey lips said no i cried because of them. But now everytime the lips say no i get a chill going down my spineever time weird huh?

  • oh wow!! I used to LOVE this as a kid!

  • its back yay

  • I wanted to see more of the "muppet dance". Dont act like you don't know what I'm talking about.

  • On 1:43, Grover appears for the second time, but he dances while all seven "No" words show up on the chalkboard to Grover's right (but it is seen to my left).

  • On 0:27, Grover is seen inside a car and driving, and once his car begins speeding up on 0:30 (just after Maria & Gina sing "Too fast or slow".), Grover lifts his head up like he's saying, "I shouldn't have done that" or "Why the heck did I do that?"

  • Or by thinking... "Awww, s**t")

  • Reply to the Previous Goof: On 1:28, Bert & Ernie show up on the screen as Maria & Gina sing: "No Hiding from 'N' and 'O'." Once the word "No" appears directly close to them, they duck down and then hide underneath the brick wall. That seems very funny indeed.

  • i know but i love genia face when the n and o creep closer to her

  • i have been talking about this video for awhile at my job and no one believed this song existed!! I knew it did I just couldnt think of the title... all I kept saying was "no no no no no no no"

  • OMG Thanks so much for posting this up.

  • One of my absolute favorites! Thank you!

  • I remember this

  • omg...i remember seeing this when i was little...thanks for uploading it!
