  • We make no pretense at suggesting that this was experimentally valid in any way! Our paradigm was sloppy and our sample size was only three. We had confounds and biases too numerous to count. Our only goal was to see if we could, in an informal way, observe the effect we had heard of. Overall it was more observed than I ever expected.

  • @hchypnotism Thats all agreed, it was like a pilot exercise. But the interesting thing is how effects that seem very pronounced in such situations turn out not to be significant when you go on to do the analysis of a proper data-set. Anyway, I dont want to sound patronising. I will keep an eye open for your future work.

  • To make a proper experimental evaluation of the conjectured effect you would need to control for the fact that the participant will probably know what the intended result is and can deliberately read thecolours off slower in the "baseline" condition than she really can, in the supposedly "text-neutralised" condition. You would also need to control for sequence effects, practice effects and "experimenter" expectation (through use of pre-recorded instructions), among other variables.

  • Folks, its not that the hypnotism isnt "working properly". Its just a fact that no matter how well hypnotised, effects such as suggested text neutralisaion here really only result in an "as if" behaviour. Your little informal demonstration shows this. For which I commend you. For comparison, look up "Delayed Auditory Feedback" and the research of various psychologists which shows that no matter how well a hypnotised person pretends to be deaf, they in fact do still hear normally.
