  • lol I suppose you have to have grown up with it to appreciate it... As an Aussie I get all patriotic whenever I hear it (definitely better when sung either by John Farnham himself in front of a massive crowd, or at 2am after several drinks with your mates).

  • What is this shit? have you heard the original? This sounds like some bad karaoke? That was some weak shit!

  • Simon is stupid, that was awesome!!!

  • As an Australian I find it quite sad that these 'famous' American artists that are supposed to be the be all and end all don't even know one of the most talented artists in the world! And Paula, John Farnham crapped ALL OVER your American composers.

I'm not saying I don't like American's, I love you guys! I'm just saying that it's disappointing when the country that has the largest music industry in the world doesn't know real talent.

  • It would've been majorly improved by Bradley James and Colin Morgan lip-syncing in the background...

    Just sayin'.

  • @BlueBoxGirl42 haha i agree 100%

  • Ghastly song? So i guess the millions the song made and continue to make mean nothing? Toss! Oh, and Paula Abdul has such an awful way of talking.

  • This would be a good song for the Hunger games! For Katniss

  • Telling American's we suck does not do very much to promote the message of this song. I am on a couple of forums and it took me a bit to recognize that not all people are as nationalistic as Americans. I actually wish this show had a different name, um, Idol of the Nations? : D

  • Hey, hey not all Americans are like that to be honest, yes most of us are myopic and think we are all that, but at least some of us Americans are not stupid. Some of us actually think instead of jumping to conclusions and flip out when someone thinks otherwise, but who cares its just the internet :3

  • to everyone who's hateing on 'americans', Simon is Brittish

  • Take jaydenlawson's advice: best thing ever! This version simply lacks the fire Farnham's version has.

  • He had the song but he didn't sing it from his gut. This sounded muted. If he had let go and sang it from his gut he would have done well.

  • If you look in the dictionary under music you'll most likely gonna find John Farnhams name.

  • One of the best songs of all time. Search John Farnham + Coldplay. WOW

  • @jaydenlawson yeah, the Sound Relief was some show....

  • props to archuleta for the song choice.

  • You know, call me silly, but the different pitch level really effects the song for me. John Farnham's version is so much better for me. It just has this epic feel to it thanks to a couple high notes. Whereas this guy...he just doesn't nail it.

  • Lol he was so cute

  • John Farham is MUCH BETTER

  • if i had a dollar for every pixel... id have 3 dollars :(

  • as an auzzie i dont think he sung it badly

i was more pissed about what the judges said about the song

    theme park my ass

  • 240p, We meet again!

  • He put no spirit into it, No emotion.

  • Oh wow, this realy screws over the original and brings a new meaning of totaly fucking it up. Only John can sing it as it suposed to be sang

  • Type in John Farnham sound relief in you tube to learn how to sing this song. This is like me urinating on the bible. You have offended many many Australians David

  • JOHN FARNHAM'S SO BEAUTIFUL SONG COMPLETELY MESSED UP BY THIS STUPID IDIOT!!!!

  • David mate that was terrible...If your australian your able to understand the b ackground to this song.. As a true blue aussie this song is one of those songs that could pass as our national anthem and onlu john farnham can sing it if any one is was to sing it your always going to be compared to him thats just how it is..doesnt help that your american either! stupid yank maybe sing amazing grace next time lol

  • @brfellis - Everyone will always think of is as JF's song, and he performed it very well, and first. However, the whole Australian background dreck doesn't really work, as the song was written entirely by Brits. Not British transplants to Australia, but actual living-in-the-UK Brits.

  • wow he BUTCHERED it.

  • sorry mate u sang this song sht as

  • Did someone shoot a cat??

  • John Farnham is perhaps the best male singer in the world. No one other than him can do justice to this song.

  • Ok so he sung a John Farnham song its one of johns best, david did NOT pull it off there arent many that can. david has a nice voice, just not for this song. Those of u who say this song isnt well known or obscure or "kitsch" need to do ur homework b4 commenting. This song is not only powerful in its words but in its use of the voice its not a boys song. Thank u to david tho for bringing back this song and liking JF enuf to sing it.

  • his alot cuter and good looking than Justin Bieber,,,,

    haha ...Luv yuh david..<3

  • dude simons always right

  • WATCH THIS SONG DONE PROPERLY... SEARCH "COLDPLAY JOHN FARNHAM". WHOEVER SAID THIS IS AN UNKNOWN SONG... PLEASE EXPLAIN THE 50000 PEOPLE SINGING ALONG..

  • @sfm71 Damn straight, sends chills up my spine everytime i watch it!

  • fuck you simin u have no taste what so ever im glad you retired fuck you

  • why the fuck are ya clapping!? XD

  • this song is my childhood, love john farnham so weird hearing someone else sing it!

  • @princessyrandom1214 hehe yeah I know what your talking about:)

  • I like David Archuleta! Loved this season of Idol :)

  • what a weak ass cover of john farnham's epic voice.

    this kid...sucked ass...oh my GOD

  • please, please watch the original john farnham one after this

  • How do you not know who John Farnham is that's like saying you've never once heard mention of Jesus Christ whether you believe or not.

  • listen to the original. much better

  • i hope someone beat the hell out of this kid for butchering this song like this....

  • this is horrible

  • R.I.P Zyzz

  • No power in his voice for this song, very bad....

  • is that the way it goes

  • australian

    oi oi oi

  • Personally I prefer the gorgeous and talented ;) duet - Morgan/James

  • watch this version:

    /watch?v=NGVI07Blh4A

    winner of dutch x-factor 2009

  • @peffyman she does a much better job

  • And this is why David Cook won. Archie didn't have "The Voice" to sing this brilliant song.

  • Typical ignorant Americans (criticising the song choice), think the whole world has nothing to offer except their country. That’s why you’re on the nose!

  • @cramdall5 dont hate us as a whole geez. not all of us think like that. this "typical ignorant" American is offended.

  • David should have one :(

  • the real one is wayy better !

  • this songs suits muslim ppl !

  • 1:26 is it only me or are your gaydars blinking right now? LOL anyway, i love David Archuleta!!

  • OMG hahah he's adorable!! :* <3

  • Quite a dissappointing performance though...

  • which I could watch this in Aus... and when he was on it

i would have voted i SOOOO would have vote

  • Far out, could they have possibly moved it to a lower key??? Castrates the song completely! What a cock!

  • RUBBISH

  • This song is the best when lip-synced by bradley and colin! XD

  • NO ONE can sing this song like John Farnham. He is the Voice! Listen to any of his songs and you'll quickly realise he is amazing. Having said that and considering this kid is only a kid.. he gave it a good go. This song in Australia is all bare the national anthem.. everyone knows it back wards. It has powerful lyrics that we take to heart and I think it's great that it has reached a much wider audience. He was very brave to take it on I'll give him that.

  • oh Paula Abdul , i love Paula she is amazing !

  • Bradley and Colin are to be died of laughing

  • no one can do it like john farnham. but he did a good job.

  • To all the people who said this kid made the song popular you have obviously never been to Australia, this song could be used as the national anthem.

  • David Archuleta made John Farnham popular esp. in America by his singing. A few of David's choices on idol were too sophisticated for the judges. This is a great song with great message but it was mocked by Simon and misunderstood by Randy and Paula. David is no teen idol- he is a mature thoughtful young man with social consciousness and choose songs that reflect his views. He is destined for greatness and with his angelic voice, he can lift the spirits of anyone who listens to him.

  • @iadorearchie Actually I think the film "Hot Rod" brought it mostly to the American audience. Regardless, Simon wasn't mocking the performance, more stating (and as an Australian who grew up listening to Farnham) that his singing style doesn't really suit the song. Whilst kudos to David for choosing such a (to the American audience) obscure song, as the other judges didn't know the song, they didn't have a benchmark of what the song really should sound like. Still, props to David for trying!

  • i love small david. XD

  • He is doing his best. For the original search john farnham aria awards. Trust me yoll love it

  • He is singing this much lower than the original.

  • watch how Estonians sang this song :P youtube.com/watch?v=BxDaSN7Np84

  • bradley and colin do this better. thumbs up if you agree and know what im talking about : )

  • @princessyrandom1214 MERLIN FTW

  • @princessyrandom1214 so true

  • @princessyrandom1214 haha YESSSS!

  • I'm Australian and i think he did a pretty good job of this song. He doesn't have THE VOICE to hit all the powerful notes John Farnham does.. It was a good version! I also love that he has now made that song popular in America!

  • i really wish more people knew the ORIGINAL version

  • Sorry Kid... But leave a masters song to the master.

John is "THE VOICE". Maybe you should learn how to hold a note, or sing with conviction.

Stick to middle of the road pop... And stop trying to desecrate a masterpiece.

  • I think cook won american idol that night

  • Oh god, I don't watch American Idol anymore, but he was such a cutie. I was sad that he didn't win, although I love David Cook just as much.

  • Fuck, how can you not know that song? It just punches you in the face soo hard and has such an emotive message that it just needs to be heard by everyone!

So glad I got to see it live during one of his 50billion farewell tours xD

  • Ignore Simon.

  • I'm an Aussie and I gotta say, that was really well done! I love the original, but it's such a great song and I'm glad he introduced it to the people who missed out on it!

  • @triiish09 i agree with what you said except one thing "introduced the song unknown to almost all the people around the world" John Farnham is one of the most well known and respected Australian artists and is also well known in several parts of Europe. He was inducted into the Australian music hall of fame and is arguably the most successful Australian artist of the past 40 years.Just because one of his songs is on American idol and you have never heard it before does not mean no one else has.

  • @burntjoint That's why i said, 'almost' ..

  • good job

  • manky ............

  • Before modulation, he's singing a 4th lower than the original. And then it's getting only worse

  • press 6 to hear the one crap note .

  • darnie,he's hot!♥

  • Comment removed

  • FUCK THIS KID ... he totally raped John Farham's voice :((((((

  • boohoo you that third judge he did good YOU ROCK DAVID ARCHULTA

  • Comment removed

  • Have a look at coldplay john farnham you're the voice for what the real thing sounds like.

  • I think the problem Simon had is that he found the song is a little cheesy. David did tend to choose too many inspirational songs--some were good like "Imagine" or "Angels", some were a little more maudlin, like "You're the Voice", or "Another Day in Paradise". I personally don't mind songs on the sappy side, and like both of those anyway, but clearly different nationalities have different popular tastes.

  • cant believe the utter ignorance of randy and paula...... how can they not have heard of this song ...shows how cut off from rest of the world they are

  • As an autralian I am not offended by this version. he lacks the vocal power of John Farnham but he has made the song his own as any good singer should. It takes guts to do more than just mimic another singers phrasing.

Look at Land Down Under by Sekond Skyn I like it better than the original and they are an american band.

  • @NoChattanMeUp AGREED. Finally! There's someone here who is not too bigoted. Thank you for that. He did lacked JF's vocal power but it doesn't mean he butchered it.

  • Actually unlike most american people, I found out about this song form Bradley James and Colin Morgan. And I love their version (well, parody of it). SO HILARIOUS.

  • Because of this, i found out about who john farnham is and realized that the message of the song is amazing. SO why don't you stop criticizing his performance when you actually can't do any better? WHY don't you look at the good side of it, he actually introduced the song unknown to almost all the people around the world and we find it really beautiful and meaningful?

GOD this is why i hate twofaced, judgmental idiots !

BTW now this song is stuck in my head and i can't help but sing it. LOL

  • @triiish09 so true! But truth be told, what most Australians don't like is the fact that to most of us, this song is almost considered kitsch and almost an unofficial anthem which America pretty much rejected when it was first released over there, so it was a little bit insulting that the song only became popular in America with what I agree with Simon C here, a cover that lacks the power of the original. Still, credit to David for popularizing the song enough to get it featured on a GTA game!

  • @triiish09 "unknown" that being every country apart from the UK and Australia..."

  • @triiish09

This song was hugely successful in Australia, NZ and the UK and reached the top 10 in many European countries

John Farnham is arguably one of Australia's most successful artists. Calling him or one of his greatest hits 'unknown' to most people is ridiculous and makes you seem ignorant.

GOD this is why i dislike ignorant Americans and their "we are all that is" attitudes...

    :P

  • @joshrb1986 Well sad i was going to write something but this sums it up ,

  • @joshrb1986 ...this comment is totally wrong...it isn't good to call anyone anything just because you don't agree with their point of view.

  • @joshrb1986 it's pretty ignorant that you say all "americans"

  • @joshrb1986 I had actually heard that song and was kind of miffed with Paula's comment. John Farnham sings it brilliantly and David didn't do a bad job. Also, what about the Paul McCartney songs and Beatles songs he sang? Certainly not American composers or singers. One thing about David Archuleta having music in his family history he has a wide range of music he's familiar with and sings. Most Americans don't have that ignorance in thinking that American singers are the only ones that sing well

  • @joshrb1986 you dislike americans because of a few peoples ignorance?... hmmmm, you aren't ignorant at all

  • @joshrb1986 You don't think you're being at all unfair? Sure, some Americans are arrogant, some Australians are. It's has less to do with where you're from than who you are. Also, you said it yourself, this song was hugely successful in Australia, New Zealand and the UK, not the United States. So here, it is unknown to most people.

What I'm really trying to say here is, don't judge an entire nation based on the comments of a few people.

  • @triiish09 he didnt introduce a "virtualy unknown" song around the world.. it was introduced and hit the top 10 in many british and european countries back in 1990 when it was released.

  • @cass3765 - agreed - that song was all over my childhood, hugely popular and still gets airtime every now and again. Infact I think it stayed up in the Top 10's for ages here in South Africa - John Farnham used to do this amazing voice modulation thing, still love it. Maybe it just wasnt played in the US - so I suppose we should forgive their ignorance because they really believe that all pop-culture goes via their geocentric filter. I kinda sang along because I still remembered the lyrics.

  • Wow he really butchered it.

  • He had a good go at it, but he's just got the wrong voice for it. Plus the arrangement of the song was ridiculous.

  • I love this song but not this rendition of it. Sorry.

  • i hate when people comment on how stupid americans are, it's pointless.

  • his voice is amazing, but this song isnt for him. he does better with more powerful songs :)

  • @kelseyandalexis

This song is not powerful? Omfg gimme a break, the guy is an average singer, hes only popular and getting far because of the ignorant women and girls that like his looks.

    He fucked up this song.

  • Comment removed

  • Good grief this is a TERRIBLE rendition of a really good song.

He just doesn't have the voice to pull it off. Not even close.

    TERRIBLE

    He ruined a good song!!!!

  • "couldn't have picked an american composer"

WTF was that comment? A perfect example of Americans having their heads so far up their arses they never experience anything outside the US. well done to David for choosing that song even if he did butcher it. I mean nothing beats the original :D

  • hmm. I do not approve of the key change in this rendition. It was silly, and did nothing for the performance. Search "truck driver's gear change" and you'll see what I'm talking about.

  • hi is awesome

  • 1:50 <- Bullshit Skip Button

  • I am pretty sure this was recorded with a potatoe...

  • @Torffvit it's spelled potato

  • @heythereyou1234

I listened to the critique again, and it's pretty clear to me that Simon is critcizing the song's idealistic message. By this point in the competition, he had already critcized David for sticking so much to "message" songs, and he's saying that he's at it again.

Also, I think all the stuff about David having a controlling stage parent was coming out aroud then, and Simon saying "the song isn't you" means he thinks it was a manipulative choice on David's dad's part.

  • If you love this song, there's hardly any point to dissing Archie. Very few Americans would otherwise know of this song at all, and the sales to the original artist almost always go up after it's covered on Idol. David has said that he loves following the international charts and has very eclectic tastes. For some reason, Randy and Paula criticize him for choosing an unfamiliar song. I think a fledgling American artist paying tribute to an Australian artist and song is a good thing.

  • This is why Americans should not sing Australian anthems.....this was horrific. And @iadorearchie you're an idiot...'introduced John Farnam to the world' bahhaa I dont think you're Archie did this....I think this may have happened many a moon ago!

  • Hmm, doesn't sound powerful at all.

  • icarly david

  • My favorite performance of this song still is the one by Colin Morgan and Bradley James! ;)

  • David Archuleta, you are a wonder! You introduced John Farnham to the world. Your version of the song was amazingly great! People who can not feel your music are probably not human and those who criticize your perfection could not even come close - never in their lifetime.

  • @iadorearchie You're an idiot teenaged fan-girl aren't you?

This was TERRIBLE. He ruined a great song from way before your time little girl.......

You realize there was music BEFORE Britney Spears or Miley Cyrus came along, don't you?

Be honest. Go pull up and listen to the orginal "You're the Voice" by John Farnham, then come back and listen to this ghastly train-wreck of a version.

Simon was too delicate here, it was an AWFUL performance by this kid.

  • Skip to 1:54 if you hate bullshit. Skip to 5:44 if you want to avoid bland cover versions.

  • He put his heart and soul into this song. There is only one thing missing. he is

NOT AUSTRALIAN!!. Therefore he is bound to FAIL.

  • @jesquire83 He can only be Australian to sing this sing?

    But that's racist... =..(

  • @jesquire83 what a fuckin' racist.

  • Clearly picked for the song title, hoping for a "yes David, you ARE the voice" comment at the end.

  • aHHHHHHH kid, your killing it. You need much much more passion in this song. I suggest you listen to the original, written and sung by John Farnham.

  • get the mic away from him for fuck's sake

  • Oh boy, atleast a good 10,000 comments gonna raid this video and say Farnhams's was better.... Im proudly one of those comments lol

  • The fact that David even knew this song at the age he was here (17)was amazing.

David sings from his heart, and this song obviously meant something to him.

    Gee, lighten up people.

  • Didnt he win?

  • The ones who liked it obviously didn't hear John Farnham singing the original. The kid has talent, but I agree this song didn't fit to him.

  • Didn't really like it compared to John Farnham's.
