how on earth did a lovely bit of song and dance by an adorable and gifted child and a very very talent black man foster such vitriolic debate? so silly
@jazzscherzo emmit til was my cousin my dad was his first cousin. james... my dad was one of the cousin in chigago ill. my mom still referes to him as bo bo...she says it just is sad..what happened to him
@jazzscherzo Damn I have notice a lot of people telling you about race relations in this country but I am pretty sure you have no idea about the historical facts about the film alone. I read what you wrote and you have zero evidence to support your argument. The only thing it says about myself is I should continue teaching like I currently am and help people learn about the past and images you have no idea about.
@jazzscherzo You know what I mean about a black man being around a white lady in that time. Emmett Till got beat to death for "whistling" at a old white lady. Those people where no joke back then. I'm happy that he was able to be a light 4 equality but I'm sure his dressing room was off the lot if you know what I'm saying. I'm glad I can have my white wife sleeping on right next to me and there's not dudes with torches outside me door. My life is that simple. Great clip, but it's hate hypocrisy
@joshspoon actually Emmett Till was shot, castrated, brutally beaten and hog tied to a large fan and thrown into the Mississippi river. The problem with film is Robinson is playing a stereotypical black man called a "Uncle Town" if you look at a lot of these film those images come from "Birth of a Nation" by D.W. Grifth. I agree with the clip it is hate hypocrisy and the person that posted the clip has the idea society would be great if it was similar.
@joshspoon Emmett Till was no "light 4 equality". He was a very rude teen who was disrespectful to an adult. It was all the more tragic because of the era when it occurred. He had a responsibility to behave himself because not only were those his mother's instructions, but his actions could've impacted a whole community. Had he done the same thing to a gang-banger's woman today, the results might be just as tragic- without headline coverage.
@Carvinter - Did you actually make that statement? Emmet's actions did not affect a whole community. The actions of those heartless murderers who took a child out of his bed at night impacted a community. True, the same thing would probably happen today with a gang banger but what is your point? Ignorance and evil is all the same.
@iralevifan In the pre-civil rights era, there is documented history of whole black towns being razed (replete with murder), because of an alleged or actual offense committed by a black. I can cite Forsythe, Georgia, and Rosewood, Florida, as but two examples, among many. What's my point, you ask? Go into just about any inner-city public gathering of youth about Till's age (ie. public school, store, bus, etc.), and witness first-hand the mindless legacy that his behavior has bequeathed us.
@Carvinter- I still don't see how youthful rebellion warrants cold-blooded murder. The examples you cited ( , Rosewood, Tulsa, etc) are examples of the barbaric nature of bigoted whites. The actions of a gangbanger in a drive-by makes more sense than white people bringing children to watch the lynching of another human being for a social slight. To think that any group of inner city kids will display 'mindless' behavior only shows how ignorant and isolated you are.
@iralevifan I'd never stoop so low as to call anyone who disagreed with me ignorant, but I am baffled that you can make sense out of a drive-by shooting. Deliberately putting one's life in danger (as well as a whole community), is not youthful rebellion, but the height of ignorance. I was in Alabama as a youth, and I've lived in the inner-city. I know from whence I speak- real life experience, not isolation.
@Carvinter -Ignorant isn't an insult-just means you don't know.why should whistling at a woman be reason for murder or destruction of a community? I see well-behaved,polite gatherings of inner-city kids all the time. See the kids in Harlem's 100 block program.Look at the depression, homicidal feelings and drug abuse that plague privileged, suburban kids. Again..what is your point?
@iralevifan I can see that you've no basic idea of the mores of basic Southern 50's culture. It was an era where a black man could be arrested for "reckless eyeballing" a white woman, let alone whistling at one. Till's behavior that day, I believe, famously led us down that slippery slope that's so rampant today- especially in Harlem where I was partially raised. Special programs encouraging good behavior is front page news, because clearly, it's far from the norm in that community.
@Carvinter WHAT POSESSED YOU TO EVER LEAVE ALABAMA ? YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED. MAYBE YOU COULD HAVE HELPED SOME OF THE 3 - BRAIN - CELLED REDNECK REBELS
@jazzscherzo It is people like me pretty funny so I guess Bill O Reilly Sarah Palin Fox News Glenn Beck Rush Limbaugh are perfect examples of people trying to make society equal. Racism is a social construct created by white people so please do more research. Why is it safe for a black man to entertain a white audience? Why is it that the US has home grown terrorist i.e KKK, Mcveigh, but mainstream America wants to hurt all Muslims for 9/11? So I keep it alive lol go learn a little more
@jazzscherzo Let me school on a few things....you say it is people like that keep racism alive no I would disagree. It is people like Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, Bill O Reilly, and Fox News and The Tea Party that keep racism a live. Please do not try to spit We Shall Over Come BS at me get your facts straight. Nothing in the film represents social equality. Learn your history, what the film shows is a period during the Civil War where enslaved people should be happy to serve their owners.
@jazzscherzo AMEN! Life should be this simple when it comes to the races getting along. I'm still optimistic when I see examples like this, though. There's hope yet.
@jazzscherzo He was her servant in the movie......However I LOVE this clip and Bill Bojangles was so very talented!!! I can't wait till the differences between races aren't even an issue!
Ever notice how people, who on the surface are opposite, seem to make the best teams? These two. Hepburn/Tracy. Bacall/Bogart. Laila Ali /Maksim Chmerkovskiy. I could go on. If people could only realize what's on the surface is so trivial.
I'd like to see the contestants on 'Dancing With the Stars' do THIS!!! X-P i love whistling the tune to this song, especially when i'm doing housework for some reason. . .O_o thanx 4 posting, i love it! ^_^
Shirley Temple was the most important female of the 20th Century. During the depression FDR would often say as long as we have Shirley Temple we are ok. It can not be understated her importance in that period. She was honored twice in the Rose Bowl Parade. She is the only one to have this honor. She was a ambassador twice and could charm her way to get other countries to comply with the USA. She had more impact as a child actress then any actress ever in any period of time.
If only it was this simple but certain humans will never get along as they don't realise how lucky they are to be alive and for what ever reason be it colour, religion or like's and dislike's if Only someone like Derren Brown could work his magic on them to rid their mind's of the poison in their head's ,peace be with you
Bojangles was also known for vigorously protecting his steps. One didn't dare try one of his steps within his view although, many couldn't wait to try steps they had seen him do at the Hoofer's club. Also, his name 'Bojangles' (defined above as 'happy-go-lucky' or 'squabbler') was listed in another source as being a vulgarization of the name of a Frenchman known in Robinson's hometown. It seems the man had a beaver skin hat which he lost.
bojangles Born in Richmond, Virginia on May 25, 1878, to Maxwell Robinson, a machine-shop worker , and Maria Robinson, a choir singer, Bill Robinson was brought up by his grandmother after the death of his parents when he was still a baby. He was christened Luther, a name he did not like, so he suggested to his younger brother Bill that they should exchange names.
