He was also such a nice guy...so humourous..never took himself too seriously.
I recall watching him at Ronnie Scotts Club in 1977 (UK) and he stopped halfway thru doing Morris Alberts song "Feelings" (which was high in the charts at the time)
and tells the audience " What is this crap? I hate this song. It goes nowhere!"
this is the most ridiculous thing i've ever seen. i absolutely love it.
what a way to involve teh audience in active listening. when I try and look for the "joe pops" i end up diving even deeper into his playing. never disappoints.
Every time i see Joe play I try to pick up on something he's doing. It's just hard for me to dissect his playing because I'm enjoying it so much I can't stop it!
Does anyone know what happened to the video of pass doing "What are you going to do for the rest of your life"? It was here fro years, now I cant find it and... it drives me crazy
You're right doublealufwaffe, nobody knows this. (Get it!)
We are all so fortunate to have these video memories. I dont compare guitarists and dont usually speak in absolutes, but Joe Pass is THE best Jazz Guitarist, past, present, and as far as I am concerned, the future!
Yep Joe practiced I guess! Many people think the CAGED system was discovered or invented. I don't think so. The CAGED system just 'is'; a natural result of the tuning of the guitar and the harmonies western style music. You can't get away from CAGED. Whatever your style, you are using CAGED, even if you don't realise it. For me, it helps visualise the fingerboard. Great, great playing here from The Man. The Master. RIP Joe.
isn't it odd how many top musicians get high. what is that? drugs aren't part of my diet but i imagine coke to be like a dozen cups of coffee! can virtuosity be achieved through chemicals? at any rate, you can't help but like Joe Pass, eh?
i heard that he was big on the CAGED concepts. he said that CAGED was everything. chords, scales, arpeggios. all organized by CAGED. but he must have played/practiced an awful lot, no?
I'm a jazz guitarist and I always play with my fingers; I never use a pick. Many jazz guitar legends, aside from Joe Pass frequently played fingerstyle... Eddie Lang, George Van Eps, Lenny Breau, and Ted Greene, to name a few. It's not that rare... however, this performance IS astonishing. Joe Pass was aboslutely insane.
to pick or not to pick. it's a conundrum for us beginners. linear lines sound best by plectrum due to the wide articulation derived for tone and volume. yet, the more into chords one gets, it is inevitable to start using fingers to select chord voicings like a pianist, ending up with pick in teeth until you play lines or hard rhythm.
but the change in volume and tone on the switch is noticeable. best chords for the pick are Freddie Green shell chords or the top four strings in funk and soul played almost banjo like ("But It's Alright"). anyway, it's still a mystery to me.
trust me joe it belongs there!

How about when he pulls the pick out of his mouth at 4:26 and keeps it going with hammer-ons? Amazing!

Joe Pass is my all time favorite. Is there anyone playing today in this style, with this kind of virtuosity?
datapro007 1 year ago 2
Normally I play with the fingers but if I play a solo I'll play with the pick.

I feel that way, too, but a lot of people argue that Wes Montgomery was the greatest.
Dalsia 3 years ago
Actually, nobody knows this but Richard Strauss was in fact the best jazz guitarist ever.

What is "CAGED"
doublealufwaffe 2 years ago
@doublealufwaffe CAGED is a way of dividing the fretboard in 5 segments making it easy to move around in between positions.

Half ass. Get off your modest hobby horse and practice until you can play like that or better!
