Wow.... I graduated from a '97 Miata to an '07 Solstice, and I gotta say, this review is bullshit. The interior is a hell of a lot better than what I got in the Miata and performance wise, it's not far off. In my opinion, it's an amazing outcome from a brand new platform that (sadly) was short lived...
Look how flat the car is in the slalom. And that's a complaint for them? "You get exactly what you expect" in acceleration you can do the 1/4 two seconds quicker than a Miata (and people won't question your true gender). Yeah, sounds terrible---for that guy.
i think this is a good car, my cousin has the GXP model, ive driven it and i enjoy the drive...granted idk how it is as a daily driver but he likes it and he says because its American made parts are fairly cheap and easy to find so... yea
Like I have said...its a pretty car designed for women and american men. The american car market likes cars like this, but the real sports car world...NO! This is not a sports car. It is a pretty econo-car built for american men driving on american roads...straight roads! This car is a failure in sports car races, and can not compete with rivals like the MX5 Miata, S2000, or 370Z/380Z, much less Porsche Boxster or even the slow handling and heavy BMW Z4. America has built another failure.

Miata 22 years and STILL around....The Kappa platform was tossed around between the Germans Brits and Daewoo (of all things) . This has now joined the Fiero in its rightful place. It wasn't a REALLY bad car, But if you want performance who would buy this?, You could buy a used Vette if you REALLY wanted performance . A New/Used Lotus, Honda s2000 or a Miata was better than the Kappa, Most people who buy REAL sports cars chose to leave this on the lot (your mom or GF would like it though)

@FlippOut44 Inside Line made a video which honestly described a new car: It has a beautiful exterior/interior design and a relatively powerful drivetrain. That said, it lacks the precision that a sports coupe should posses, has atrocious seats, shoddy interior materials, and some good old fashioned stupidity (targa top, zero/little storage space). The Solstice was the first real attempt at a Miata competitor, but it was poorly executed and was never a worthy sports car.

Despite all the juvenile remarks below, this straight old father of 2 loves my 2008 Miata. It's cheaper, faster in the standard models, and much more practical. It's a real 2 seat roadster, not a failed design project.

I was actually looking at a GXP Convert. I thought the price tag should of been closer to 24-26K, not the 32K the dealer wanted. So i walked the lot more, and found a "used" G8 GT with 600 miles on it for 24K. Needless to say I dont regret getting the G8 at all. Sure I dont have a convertible that i wanted, but I have a faster, larger, and more practical car.
You can buy much better performance cars for that much.....S2000, newer Mustang GT, Camaro, 350/70z, Mx-5, Rx-8, geez the list goes on. Who would buy this shit for that much?
Sadly the "Kappa platform" Solstice was promising But it was the "GM-isms" explained in this video, that killed it.. As well, with most GM styling cues the public might accept them now.. BUT they have dated quickly . Research and Development costs are high and a dedicated project team can gain better results. That is why the Miata succeeded.. the roof here is a classic point.. and it's the user that suffers..( and sells it ) ... Honda's s2000 is a hard car to beat engine and handling wise

Look for german and japanese cars. Honda S 2000 is great! Put a v8 into it, elelbrock 347 9.9:1 for example. If you still want American, get a used stang or vette or viper. Those terminator body stangs are awesome!
i love how they compare the solstice which is relatively new to the miata which has had 3 generations of refinement under its belt, and the nissan z which isn't really even in the same class considering you can't get a v6 in the solstice and you can't get a 4 banger in the z..

I bought a 2009 Solstice GXP turbo convertible almost 2 months ago, and think it's great fun, and handles fine. I did need a second car to carry groceries and stuff and people. haha
My GRANDMA has one lmao. but nevertheless, I have drove it and it actually handles quite nice for a small car. It looks much nicer than the Miata. Unbelievable braking, too. Steering isn't that bad, although not as good as a Miata. btw Porsche does the same thing with there removable hard tops, no one bitches at them. lol
makes sense to me, fair decent rating. if it were 20k it'd be one thing, but for 30k you can buy a mustang GT, that's faster, handles better, and holds more cargo and people.

No offence but this car is based on GM know how learn from the Vauxhaull VX220 which in turn is based on a Lotus Elise and built on the same factory. Which is the world's best handling car.

That disgusting interior, the cheap fit and finish, lack of refinement, that ugly front end... I'll just stop here.
That's ashame this car sucks the way they described it. It's got awsome styling and 260 horsepower but cost a little to much. If I had the money I could see beefing the suspension up, lowering it a little, changing the rims and tires for something lighter but keeping the 18" size, maybe some Tenzo R seats, could probally deal with the targa top at the house pending it's pretty enough I would'nt want to get out of it anyway...did I mention, if I had the money?
So basically, if you remove the top and leave it at home, you cannot stop anywhere, since it would be utterly pointless to lock a car without a roof. That's funny. So all you can do is drive in circles and go back home. Unless you remember to bring along the soft targa, which will eat what little trunk space is there.
You cannot take the top with you, thats the stupidest thing ever. Was interested in this for about 20 minutes. I expect the Pontiac prices to plummet next year, if I'm in the market I may get a convertible if its dirt cheap.

I loved how pontiac had made this car originally for 20k. (Non GXP) It had semi sporty feel and looked great. But I was dissapointed with the price tag on the GXP... 10k more for not much more besideds a turbo and a few upgrades. They could have done a better job upgrading the suspension with stiffer coils. The suspension is 4 wheel independent with singe coils all around... it has alot of potential.

the Opel GT, Saturn Sky, and Vauxhall Lightning are copies of this car.
What a shame for Pontiac, usually not a big fan of american cars, the looks and size of the solstice would have got me into buying one if the driving experience were up to expectations. Replacing suspensions and fitting a customised gearbox might make a lot of difference, but for the price I'd rather get a used lotus elise!
@notsknipm its called dealer greed. Wait awhile and any new "hot" model is sold at invoice if you stick to your guns and look around for the right dealer; usually the smaller dealers at the end of the month are more likely to sell you any car you want at invoice.
i have mixed feelings about pontiac leaving this world :( its a good looking car, i love the looks... but its just not on par with some other coupes, like what the host guy says... if only the engineers put a little more into it and made it better in the competition... i honestly believe that pontiac could have used this coupe as a good come back :(
Pontiac was using this car as a comeback :( Pontiac was doing good recently but GM couldn't afford to keep the Brand because of the budget they needed to meet. Initially pontiac was going to stick around and specialize in small cars, I held alot of respect for Pontiac's outside of the box way of thinking. No other american brand seems to have the edge that Pontiac had.
i have had both gxp and one without all that horsepower, gxp is much quicker, I love my Solstice and wouldnt get rid of it for anything! Of course mine sits in the garage most of the time, it is just for fun. and it is so much fun to drive
I own a GXP coupe & love it. Faster than a Boxster for 1/2 the price. I'm 5'7" fits like a glove. Edmunds has their facts wrong calling it a 6 speed. It's a 5. Never mentioned the removable cloth top. Nice option & fits in the trunk. For 30K it's super sharp, fast with lots of features: Bluetooth, XM, chrome 18's, 6-disc, all power, leather, 0-60 in 5.5. Not sure what else you want for that price. Not ideal for everyone but most won't be disappointed with it as a pleasure car & a 1 yr only make!
I sat in one of these last year at the car show. After getting out of the Miata...I didn't like the way the Pontiac sits. The center console sits WAY too high. The seat that I sat in felt like a cheap Toyota seat with 200,000 miles on it...no cushion at all. This would be a great car if it were priced @ $16,000 but at $30.....no way!
It's a shame. This should have been the car where everything went right. When Pontiac finally got it all together and made a car that would be fondly remembered as a legend. And when a car looks this gorgeous, sigh....

Why is anyone surprised? I knew when they came out with the Solstice (originally an Opel design) they'd find a way to ruin it. Cheap build quality, inferior crap suspension and handling design are a GM trademark. I've driven in $16,000 econo-box imports that are more solidly built and have more substance. And frankly, I've seen nicer hubcaps than those ugly rims. GM could strap a big motor to a go-cart, put flames on it and some "American cars only" yahoo would think it was awesome.

That said, it lacks the precision that a sports coupe should posses, has atrocious seats, shoddy interior materials, and some good old fashioned stupidity (targa top, zero/little storage space). The Solstice was the first real attempt at a Miata competitor, but it was poorly executed and was never a worthy sports car.

I was actually looking at a GXP Convert. I thought the price tag should of been closer to 24-26K, not the 32K the dealer wanted. So i walked the lot more, and found a "used" G8 GT with 600 miles on it for 24K. Needless to say I dont regret getting the G8 at all. Sure I dont have a convertible that i wanted, but I have a faster, larger, and more practical car.

Sadly the "Kappa platform" Solstice was promising But it was the "GM-isms" explained in this video, that killed it.. As well, with most GM styling cues the public might accept them now.. BUT they have dated quickly . Research and Development costs are high and a dedicated project team can gain better results. That is why the Miata succeeded.. the roof here is a classic point.. and it's the user that suffers..( and sells it ) ... Honda's s2000 is a hard car to beat engine and handling wise

Look for german and japanese cars. Honda S 2000 is great! Put a v8 into it, elelbrock 347 9.9:1 for example. If you still want American, get a used stang or vette or viper. Those terminator body stangs are awesome!

Solstice is a gorgeous car, a definate head turner, and looks fun as hell, but not for that price haha.

No offence but this car is based on GM know how learn from the Vauxhaull VX220 which in turn is based on a Lotus Elise and built on the same factory. Which is the world's best handling car.
Even a friggin hyundai out handles a Mustang. A Mustang today as we know it, it's nothing more then a name for the marketing department. It's rubbish.

That's ashame this car sucks the way they described it. It's got awsome styling and 260 horsepower but cost a little to much. If I had the money I could see beefing the suspension up, lowering it a little, changing the rims and tires for something lighter but keeping the 18" size, maybe some Tenzo R seats, could probally deal with the targa top at the house pending it's pretty enough I would'nt want to get out of it anyway...did I mention, if I had the money?

So basically, if you remove the top and leave it at home, you cannot stop anywhere, since it would be utterly pointless to lock a car without a roof. That's funny. So all you can do is drive in circles and go back home. Unless you remember to bring along the soft targa, which will eat what little trunk space is there.

Try against a GXP with the Gmpp(top line like a SS upgrade at 290 hp and 330T, 0-60 in 4.9. tick over 103mph in the 1/4(tick over 13's and still gets 30mpg and 24 in town
The last two years in Scca t2 has been dominated by these cars so much so now its all most not fair. EMUNDS are wankers that hate anything US.
Base sol is just that the base. you compare it to your ss lol. you run into my 08GXPGMPP with 290/330, all you will see is tail lights

I loved how pontiac had made this car originally for 20k. (Non GXP) It had semi sporty feel and looked great. But I was dissapointed with the price tag on the GXP... 10k more for not much more besideds a turbo and a few upgrades. They could have done a better job upgrading the suspension with stiffer coils. The suspension is 4 wheel independent with singe coils all around... it has alot of potential.

the Opel GT, Saturn Sky, and Vauxhall Lightning are copies of this car.

What a shame for Pontiac, usually not a big fan of american cars, the looks and size of the solstice would have got me into buying one if the driving experience were up to expectations. Replacing suspensions and fitting a customised gearbox might make a lot of difference, but for the price I'd rather get a used lotus elise!

Pontiac was using this car as a comeback :( Pontiac was doing good recently but GM couldn't afford to keep the Brand because of the budget they needed to meet. Initially pontiac was going to stick around and specialize in small cars, I held alot of respect for Pontiac's outside of the box way of thinking. No other american brand seems to have the edge that Pontiac had.

I own a GXP coupe & love it. Faster than a Boxster for 1/2 the price. I'm 5'7" fits like a glove. Edmunds has their facts wrong calling it a 6 speed. It's a 5. Never mentioned the removable cloth top. Nice option & fits in the trunk. For 30K it's super sharp, fast with lots of features: Bluetooth, XM, chrome 18's, 6-disc, all power, leather, 0-60 in 5.5. Not sure what else you want for that price. Not ideal for everyone but most won't be disappointed with it as a pleasure car & a 1 yr only make!

I sat in one of these last year at the car show. After getting out of the Miata...I didn't like the way the Pontiac sits. The center console sits WAY too high. The seat that I sat in felt like a cheap Toyota seat with 200,000 miles on it...no cushion at all. This would be a great car if it were priced @ $16,000 but at $30.....no way!

Why is anyone surprised? I knew when they came out with the Solstice (originally an Opel design) they'd find a way to ruin it. Cheap build quality, inferior crap suspension and handling design are a GM trademark. I've driven in $16,000 econo-box imports that are more solidly built and have more substance. And frankly, I've seen nicer hubcaps than those ugly rims. GM could strap a big motor to a go-cart, put flames on it and some "American cars only" yahoo would think it was awesome.
