Disgruntled 70s prog-heads ... who can't stand it that Asia can play their songs, and play them pretty well ... And that John Wetton can sing about anything ... be it this or "In the Court Of the Crimson King".
And of course it was slightly slower, than Yes' live version - Wetton has to play bass AND sing it; in Yes they had a separate bass player, and singer (Jon Anderson). Duh .. Has nothing to do with the band's musical ability (which equals that of Yes, and ELP any day of the week).
Nothing shy of horrible! Did they even practice it? You'de think they would have said something like, "Wow, that just sucked. Maybe we should just stick to Asia songs so we don't make fools of our selves." But, I guess hey didn't say that!
Well, I just be a monkey's uncle! I was just wondering who the cutie was on the keyboards and read it is Geoff Downes, who I just learned was the keyboard player in the song Tempus Fugit..which was just a little before my time but I just watched it with Geoff in it back when he was very young! Coool...Steve Howe and Geoff Downes, which I didn't realize was Asia's keyboardist. :)
I like it! A bit of a higher register for Wetton-- the problem with YES is that John Anderson's vocals are basically uncoverable, unless you're Geddy Lee!
Carl Palmer drumming on Roundabout you've got too love it!!! I always thought Carl Palmer would have been a much better fill in drummer for Genesis than Bill Bruford was in 76, but if we're going too be dreaming lets also wish Kieth Emerson had replaced Rick Wakeman for Yes in 1980!!!
I remember seeing them in 2006 on this tour and playing this song. It was the only thing I didn't like about the show. I know they did it because it was Steve Howe's most famous song in Yes, but John Wetton has a VERY different voice from Jon Anderson. It just didn't sound right.
I'm suprized nobody didn't tell them in rehearsal that the idea to cover this was sucking ass badly, I guess they thought they could get by on thier egos :o(
If I hadn't seen and heard this unspeakably awful rendition of Roundabout (performed, no less, by Steve Howe) I would have found it hard to believe that two once great musicians, Howe and Wetton, would plummet the depths of mediocrity to become a hideous pair of old fools, desperate to WHORE themselves for a couple of dollars!
The quality is aboslutely horrible. This video should never have been uploaded. Yes does it way better too... this is probably one the worst covers of this song I'v ever seen a band perform.
well yes and no because he and the producer trevor horn become from a band named THE BUGGLES and they have a hit parade WHO KILL THE RADIO-STAR and they meet YES when anderson and wakeman left yes in pro for their solo projects and trevor horn and geofry downs work for yes en the album DRAMA which is very despreceful for the Yes vintage fans but in my opinion y very good and is very close the same thing with animal from pink floyd which also is despracefull for some fans
Saw them this week and the performance was awesome. Palmer haunting and preciese. Howe very fast and musical. Wettons voice sounded very young and even an lttle poetic. Did'nt even miss Wakeman. With the ELP song they did (fnfr fr th cmmn mn) it was the high point of the concert. Maybe this recording is not that good. I saw some of the best musicians of prog rock an dmy daughter was blown away.!
It's a completely different song compared to the typical Yes performances. In particular Carl Palmer's drum pattern makes it all sound a little bit "modern", perhaps?
Yeah this is incredibly bad. REALLY slow tempo (though Yes doesn't play it as fast anymore either). Did anyone in the band notice that John can't hit the high notes?
its not all that slow. i'd say that its about the same, if not a slight bit slower. most people without much musical training have the tendency to perceive the tempo of a song as faster than it really is, which is why crappy cover bands always play things too fast.
no thing man. Saw yes on the "without Jon" tour, they actually picked up the tempos a little. Think they try to err on the side of caution, if you listen to older Yes live stuff from the 70s the tempos are sometimes out-of-control fast.
I just bought the Fantasia: Live in Tokyo album partly to hear the professionally recorded version of this song. I enjoyed it thoroughly, as well as the other songs from the players back catelouges they pulled out.
Uhmmm... maybe throw out your video editing software and find another hobby. You cut out some of the coolest parts and the transitions sucked massively.
Sorry Mr Pro, the fact is Ishot this with a simple Canon Powershot G5 digital camera that only shoots 30 second clips, the cool parts didn't exist. Too bad if you don't like the transitions.
Thanks, I appreciate that. I sold the G5 and got an Olympus E500, great digital pics, 8.1 MP, but now I need a video cam, Mac compatible, no more 30 sec. clips!
thanx, i assume you've seen them quite a bit. i saw them at the hard rock hotel in Las Vegas back in 1998
they were great of course, & the venue was perfect size, i had 4th row in front of Steve Howe & i managed to move up to the front and watch his every move.Jon anderson's voice was great, he has all his range so all the tunes sounded like they were in record key. wakeman wasn't with them, they had some other european guy, he was good..
love this version! lots better than the Yes version by a long shot
