Ok, so I was halfway right. He's not having a "?-Ball" powerup or something like that, just a powerup that, in fact, upon collecting a fire flower puts a "?-Ball" in reserve with no other effect. Sounds very crazy, yes, but given powerup #4 crashes the game when collecting an item it sounds pretty viable.
I don't know which index number is it, but I can see now why did he skip that part. It must have been pretty time-consuming. And this is assuming the glitched powerups are documented.

I doubt you can put that thing in reserve non-ascetically. Even so, how did you steal a flower from your local top secret convenience store, without gaining 1000 thief points?
@Gameboygenius Well, he didn't have it in reserve. He had the powerup with Mario.
Powerups can go in reserve if you are carrying the same powerup you get, it's the transformation what gives points. (Yes, that means Raocow can safely get mushrooms. But that's a secret)
What I don't understand, is why didn't he transform into Fire Mario and why did the ?-Ball go in reserve.
@ViperKirby Now I'm not following you. To get a glitched item into the reserve, you typically need to let eat stuff like berries and enemies to fill up sprite slots etc., and that should give you points.
I did some testing on the transformation theory, and I wasn't able to avoid getting points from an item from a regular ?/! block, no matter what my own status or or reserve was. I was able to do it for items FROM the reserve, but I was refering to what he took from a ? block in TSA.
