Bas Rutten and dangerous punches

Yeah, that's the way to punch. Not. One of our pro boxers was sparring with an MMA guy, who kept trying to throw a superman punch. We warned him he was going to get hurt, but he kept trying it. My guy finally got sick of him doing it, and hit him with a straight right, while his feet were of the ground. He ended up with a broken cheek bone, and had to cancel a scheduled match. It's a stupid move that only works in MMA, because most MMA guys are wrestlers.

20 years ago we trained with this punch in TKD but it was not called superman. Also, TKD was very different then too.

the liver shot is a two edge weapon . you can hit the liver or miss and hit the edge of a rib witch is not "deadly" but very painful , but also you can hit the opponent's elbow witch with empty hand can result in breaking the fingers . what work on a ex bouncer with dozens or hundreds of street fights and a mma expert , might not work on an ordinary people . my opinion . so ... don't try this at home . looooool .

@wukillah92 2 different sports, 2 different approaches....Normally you cant be that close to an opponent in kickboxing or MMA...In boxing you dont have to worry about takedowns, kicks, knees. Im sure Bas knows what he's doing, but yeah Wards liver shot was deadly.

I never liked the way Bas described the liver shot, but both the liver and spleen are vulrnerable with that method as well as knees as i saw in the comments, but def work it out with partners(SAFELY!) and bags. As well, I like the superman for its flashyness but for CQC as opposed to MMA I have to say it's flash only, not that it's not a knockout, but a fight for your life isn't likely to last for even five minutes let alone three rounds, so a setup has to come almost instant, barring guns haha.

That "superman" punch seems really dangerous to throw. I used to box a little and i saw right away if someone threw a quick counter, it would catch that guy in mid air and probably knock him senseless because of it. About the liver shots, yes, watch chavez and/or ward to see it done right.

Its actaully very simple to avoid the superman punch. All one has to do is just rotate their body when the person attempts the strike. And then from there you grab the persons arm and do work.. lol.

Bas is truly an artist. He basically converted the smash into a devastating liver shot, and he has the fine-tuning in his traps to feint and pull that misdirection. Not a smash, not a body hook, but a precise, fight-ending blow to the liver. Hurts worse than a shot to the plexus.

As a southpaw, this has been a deadly weapon in my arsenal, but if it weren't for Bas, I doubt I'd have figured out a right-jab feint to dig in the liver. Always wanted to use the smash instead.

Yea, he got dropped in one fight. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure he lost twice to Ken Shamrock, once to Frank and the 4th and final loss was the guy who knocked him out. I don't even remember who the guy was. There is one video here on YouTube where Bas takes you through all of his fights. In that fight I believe that he had the flu or something, but with the fight already set, he fought anyway. As I said, I may be wrong, but that's what comes to mind.

@44rumblefish I talked to Bas several times on his forum,he told me he'd never been KO'd he may have gotten knocked down but not out.Ken knee barred him once,choked him out the other time.After his 2nd loss to Ken he was never submitted again.I think he lost a dec to Frank and then TKO'd him in the rematch.And yeah his Career Highlight DVD is awesome with his commentary.

If Funaki beat Bas, that would have been number 4, right? 2 to ken; 1 to Frank and 1 to Funaki. That's it, right? 4 losses total for Bas? Yes, I saw the fight when Bas and Frank went out of the ring. Frank later said that he had tried to frustrate Bas, but with nothing else working, he didn't know what else to do. He had been making stupid faces at Bas when they were on the ground.

The old saying is "Take out the body and the head will follow," but my experience has been, "Rock him high, drop him low."

I've had many more body shot knockouts and drops than head shots. Most opponents don't protect their bodies nearly as well as their heads, and less accuracy is needed to score a telling body shot that a KO head shot (although precision always helps).

One thing I don't like about the liver shot is the damage. I mean yeah you have a sturdy muscles to cushin it somewhat but it isn't protected by the ribs and I would rather hit someone in the jaw, or get hit in the jaw. I got an accidental liver shot once and it hurt like hell.....I was holding my lower rib so hard lol.
