The Superbirds were banned because they were far too radical and the racing suffered because they boosted performance to absurd levels.Mopar had more than enough firepower with conventional Chargers and the 1971-2 Roadrunner to keep winning.
Can't beat 'em.....ban 'em. What a shame that happened to Mopar over and over again. Mopar owned the drag strip too. Grumpy who? Nascar, what an embarrassing sport. I'd rather clip my toe nails than watch it. Yawn. Red neck noise! However those Birds and Daytona's were/ still are a work of beauty and art.
i say we need to open up a ALL AMERICAN race where the WHOLE CAR engine sheetmetal trim and all made here and race here (not just assembled) for that matter lets race what we bring . mopar could be there tonite with a sleek daytona IF rules alowed. however i dont want to watch off shore names in my dads sport.. besides if i can't afford to drive to a race why should i watch them waist my gas ....
~Nascar said no Big Blocks~Yeap~Guess a little 305CI can still crack 200mph~and 27 other records(K&K Dodge Daytona~40 years ago! Seriously~Love those Mopars~
NO they got wrote off because thier were no chevrolet people in the stands LIVE )watching the races in that day .this had to be remedied to bring in more money to the sport ( too much nowadays). no bill didn't care if it were fomoco amc that was or wasnt out there ..It was all busness/money decision.
You don't see Bobby Allison in this. The #6 is Buddy Baker. You also see Fred Lorenzen in #3 and Bobby Isaac (that year's champion) in #71. You also see Chargin' Charlie Gloztbach in #99. Lee Roy Yarbrough in the black and white non-winged car at 0:43 at the front of the shot.
Wow, I wish I could see more of these, the single biggest event to ever hit automotive sports was the day Dodge unveiled the Daytona, what a beautiful car... Dodge 1, 2 and 3 again...
There should be a new series added to NASCAR called "Classic". It'd be a 300-mile race at the big four each year: Daytona, Talladega, Charlotte, and Darlington (bring it back). The cars would all be retro from the 1960s complete with the big-block engines. Superbirds would be legal, as would be the Cammer engine from Ford.

did they have any wrecks that went airborne that involved a daytona or superbird?
Jkenville91 2 years ago
@Jkenville91 I'm thinking that Petty rolled a Superbird a few dowen times and walked away from it - MAYBE 1972 or so - in Daytona?!?!?!?!

Great footage...turns out a Mercury Cyclone won the '70 Nat'l 500. LeeRoy Yarbrough won it for his final victory in NASCAR's premier division.

Superb idea. There'd definatly be enough interest in it - who DOESNT want to see these beasts back on the track?
