This is pretty awesome, I'm a former Edmontonian now living in Vancouver and we have a massive car free day every year at different locations throughout the city and its really successful. Thousands of people fill the streets along with local street vendors, and street performers/musicians and everything, it's a great event. A pat on the back to Edmonton trying to do the same. I hope it becomes very successful!!
Sadly, Edmontonians, like most North Americans, will only be car-free after some sort of global Apocalypse. The oil catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico has done little to change anyone's sense of entitlement.
On a positive note, our family owns only small car that is used for errands and my husband takes the bus to work downtown every day.
