  • Two things I doing this to a 12.5 I wane to make a dipper what type of metal and how thick (size to if you know) and how dose jb weld really do in a engine

  • @Mr3wheeledbike

    A 12.5 horse!

Holy liftin, that certainly is a lot larger than this engine!

I don't have any idea of what thickness of metal to use on an engine that large, I personally only used the factory dipper off a 3 horse briggs horizontal engine. I can measure a dipper and let you know, but I sure can't give any guarentees about it!

JB Weld will hold up in an engine, BUT, I don't run these engines for very long, with the exception of the sleeve valve, which I ran on a dyno a lot.

  • @ChargerMiles007 well this is my only engine i can use and it will be put on a go cart so i would say max run time 5 hours maby 1 on average so theirs that also would you leave in the governor/ oil singer in for the governed part.........well you the small engine king so that mesherment and other info would be great

  • @Mr3wheeledbike

Take the crankcase cover off the engine, and take a close look at the bearings etc., thinking of how it will all work with the new arrangement. I see a comment below where someone didn't do many mods, and the engine worked OK. Each design is different though, so I wouldn't bank on that. I will make a vid of the dipper for a 3 horse, I am busy these days, so if I don't put the vid on by Monday, please remind me about it :)

  • I converted a B&S Quantum six or seven years ago without changing anything on the oiling system. I just put a piece of hose on the oil fill and bent it 90° and marked the point where the oil level has to be so that the original slinger gets oil. The engine is still running great. Of course i don`t know what the bearings look like, but i took the head of last year and the cylinder doesn`t look worse than it did before.

  • @1717BY

Thats interesting, glad it worked out so well for you. I only have 1 quantum, and I don't think I have ever taken it apart to look how the bearing oil slots are aligned, perhaps I will have to take a look.

  • will this work on a tecumseh

  • @dejo1976

I don't see why not, but you will have to figure out a way to get rid of the existing oil pump, and add a dipper onto the con rod. You would have to look at how the oiling slots are arranged on it. I don't have any of those engines to take a look at :)

  • couldnt u just slam a little bolt in there instead of that nail and jb weld?

  • @shinyfuzzy

Perhaps a bolt will work, but there can't be anything in the way of the crankshaft bearing when you are done.

  • I bet a fella make his own oil dipper pretty easy if he had some fab tools. Do you have a picture and or some specs on the one you mentioned miles? Would the plastic oil slinger still be retained in a vertical conversion? Im lucky enough to have alot of metal fab stuff, mig, tig, plasma cutter, torches, saws, etc. I need some old briggs to hack up into new creations! I like converting weed wackers and other small gas engines into model airplane engines, good wholesome fun!

  • @mytmousemalibu

It sounds like you like modifying engines also :)

Sorry, I don't have any specs on the oil dipper, since it is a highly stressed component, I just recommend buying one, I am not 100% sure of the part number I gave, but I think it is correct.

I cut off the plastic slinger, but use part of it as a spacer/washer to maintain the camshaft end play.

Sounds like you have some nice metal fab. play toys there! You have a few I don't, but I make do as best I can, and friends help me.

  • Thankyou for the reply , I now have my JB weld and am ready to start surgery on my Briggs , :)

  • @jasoncambs

Best of luck with your Briggs Surgery.

I have another engine that I am building, and I hope to spend some time on it this weekend.

  • Hi chargermiles007

There is a plastic flap that pivots from a coil bolt and follows around the flywheel , would I need this in a cart / bike application, as I don't see it mentioned on many videos I see ,

    Regards

    Jason

  • @jasoncambs

    You are very observant :)

The plastic part you are talking about is the air vane for the engine speed governor. I removed that for go-kart use, since it would be extremely hard to make it work, since I have rotated the carb. and gas tank 90 degrees.

You have to be careful without a governor, since the engine can now rev about 5300 rpm, and the oil dipper won't like to do that for very long, so don't keep it at max. revs for too long! :)

  • @1972FordF150

Modifying is what makes this fun , for me anyway ,:) it keeps the price down also ,

Why take a sump from a horizontal engine ? If a horizontal engine was available to take a sump from, then I am sure we would just use that engine!!

  • Couldn't you just get a horizontal shaft sump pan instead of modifying the lawnmower one ?

  • Thankyou for this video , it really explains the oil system mods that are required and the basic principles , I will start to make a video of my project engine using all the knowledge I have absorbed from your videos ,

    Regards

    Jason

  • That was awesome I always wanted to know how much to do to get a lay down motor to run standing up - besides for the level plane of the carb. it needs oiling changes that are very important - they don't have oil pumps.

There is a slinger tab of metal on the bottom of the connecting rod that spashes just enough oil around.

  • make an horizontal run vertical

that tutorial i can use verry much

  • Great video, good information for conversion!

  • wow very useful information nice job.
