Wow, so you are a musician yourself? I'm. I play piano and organ (for many years) Unfortunatelly I can't sing very well. Although I really enjoy real fine choirmusic. The occasion in the Notre Dame was a once in a lifetime-occasion. I believe that John Scott was one of the organists (choirorgan) and Olivier Latry played the grand organ. One of my biggest wishes is to play that organ (or the ones in London) ...
Thanks for responding. But I witnessed that occasion that the big CC-organ was about to get inaugurated. On the day before (saturday) the cathedral was actually closed. But I got in and saw and heard the two choirs singing this piece. I was sitting very close by the members of the choirs. I spoke to a lady, (a mother of one of the members). She told me that her son was a member of the choir of the Westminster Abbey. Amazing, isn't it?
@wespeswes Thanks - I stand corrected! I'd love to have heard that! I've never managed to hear anything as good as that (or this!) during my visits to Paris. I deputize regularly with these London church choirs and sing regularly at the London Oratory.
This messe sollennelle is also available on CD, played bij Pierre Cochereau. (even better version..).
During the inauguration of the organ, (somewhere in 1993?) I witnessed a performance of this piece, sung by 2 choirs; this choir en the choir of the Westminster Abbey. I believe that during the rehearsels heaven was on earth!!!
@wespeswes I think that may have been the choir of Westminster Cathedral. Westminster Abbey is Church of England and I would be very surprised if they visited Notre-Dame for such an occasion! Both Westminster choirs are very fine, as is this one! Best wishes.
