This was the best part of the opening ceremony. I thought the Thunderbird was great with "rot and destruction" well done. Everybody likes their own nation's history and traditions the best. That is natural and understandable--being ethnocentric is natural--I just remembered the word.
Great experience for those participating. Not all a/v can be perfect, not all narration can capture all things for everyone, and God knows the haters will never be pleased with anything they didn't do themselves (ahem), but being in this choir was a front row seat at something spectacular. I was so excited, at 7:28 I almost leaned TOO far to my left and fell off the ramp. I'm about mid-way up. This will always be one of the greatest choirs in the world-- the ASOC!!!!
WOW...a perfect rendition of the Civil War! This was an excellent performance. The ending is perfect. How the nation came together. WOW! Thanks again for posting.
the only thing that the organizer misses was that they should used a harness in the last part of this portion... the fairy that was wearing pure white gown should have been lifted while others were dancing...
This is VISUALLY amazing. But I think the music is seriously lacking, and the announcers kind of ruined the moment for me. I won't even try to compare it to Beijing because obviously there is different technology at work there. I just think music and sound is a huge part, and that's what needed work here.

pretty pointless ceremony...they got the games though....maybe if they tried harder they could've done a better job like china even though the united states are not half as cultrualy rich as china.....200 years versus how many years have china been a civilization??
It very easy to be amazing when you have the billions of dollars the Chinese Government Through at the 2008 Games. In the US, in 1996 it was completely privately funded.

hahaha. im american and its so obvious china blew all other olympic openers out of the water. you're all just jealous and thats exactly what they wanted to do.
Whether it was the best to present to you through a screen or not, this had been an amazing even to be there in the crowd and witness. I can not say I was there for any other Olympic Game but the one, and thus this was my absolute favorite.

Thats was the boringest ceremony.ever...and im a american...we can do much much mcuh better then that...beijing was the best ...and im not chinese....wow....i though americans had money....what the f was that
@K80blogfan thats the thing, the old ceremonies werent about technology or money they were about man power, they had hundreds of people puppeteering robots and stuff in the old ceremonies, now its all done by computer, what happened to the pageantry
you know everyone says oh my god how awful this is but theres already people whining about how bad bejing was which i clearly dont understand because they did do a great job
Although you can't really compare Atlanta to Athens since Atlanta has a shorter history!! Also Atlanta wasn't the Olympic birthplace so it can't be on the same level as Athens. Athens us more culturally innovative too so.... good try though!! I want to see Beijing too bad I'm working when it comes on a 6pm later today!!:(
I love and respect southern culture even though I'm Canadian and my parents are from Grenada,in the Caribbean. But I have to say that when i first say this on TV as a child I thought wow!!! Since I was visiting my family in Atlanta during this time. Looking back though I'd said it was way too messy !! There's so much going on all at once and it seemed very kitsch!! I feels like a giant parade :P!! It also reminds me of Americanized Christian Caribana/Carnival. Athens was better obviously!!
Atlanta did an impressive job of conveying cultural commonalities. I don't understand all of the negative reviews. It's like I tell people from Europe who suggest similar ideas, just because you have a longer history on paper and easily recognized cultural traditions doesn't make it better or more important. Everybody has what they feel is important, everybody has their struggles, and what's shown here is exactly that.
i think Beijing well do a fantastic job better than this atlanta 96 and athens was phenomenal very beautiful now that is cultural history and outstanding music from dj tiesto from holland and no idiot talking
What a wonderful presentation of the southern states history and culture. Great city and wonderful people. The critism only confirms it-this was the best olympic opening ceremonies ever. Well done Atlanta!!
Espectacular, esa ha sido la mejor ceremonia de apertura de unos juegos olimpicos que jamas haya visto, la musica es unica, tambien me gusto la de barcelona 92, pero esta estuvo muy pero muy bien elaborada....
that how atlanta become famous and popular!

nice but it really lacked of avant-gardness; gray compared to Barcelona, Albertville and Athens...
