you guys are lame. screw freedom of opinion. this version will always be better than the 2005 remake. for one, it has more passion. the new movie tried to focus more on comedy, and it was an epic fail.
When it comes down to it, both versions have their own perks, whether it be: adding your own twist or being true to the book, but we have to remember that the first one was made only to promote the soon to be released Wonka bars, and the second one didn't stay as true to the book as some think, Wonka's dad was never mentioned in the novel, but with that being said, I prefer the 2005 version better. :)
wow haters gonna hate, i actually really like all the actors and the movie. maybe its nt as good as the book (im 13, i wouldnt know) but hey this movie is really great, i think when u make a movie u want it to be a great movie, not a visual book. its amazing, prove to me otherwise
@MpregLove While you have your opinion, others don't and you have no need to call us ignorant because we like it. I grew up with this movie. I watched the VHS so many times the tape was worn thin and I had to get a new copy. While I agree, it is quite unlike the book, it's a hard book to transition into film.
@coolistmo They don't. But after being outgunned on sites like rotten tomatoes, imdb, and even thatguywiththeglasses, the extreme cultists of Tim Burton and/or Johnny Depp, more determined than ever to build up the newer version over this one (which half of them probably never seriously watched) have found youtube an easier place to pull off hyperbolic rhetoric against this movie and anyone who praises it. (Plus they all can thumb up anyone and everyone who agrees with them a lot.)
@JourneyToCarter There's a reason people only started saying that when the newer movie came out. The more obsessive members of Burton's and Depp's cults think that the mere existence of this movie is a threat to the reputations of each, especially since this older one still holds the most critical praise of the two, and so must bash it for anything they can think of.
The book is good, better than the new movie, and agaist this one is a different, more detailed version of the story.
Many people have mixed feelings about the movie. I grew up with it, so I guess I love it by default, even though it is very different from the book (which I was a fan of also). I don't think I mind it being different from the book though, the book seemed like it wouldn't transition to film very well, but it had film worthy ideas.
This movie was WAY BETTER than Burton's lame remake. Here Burton claims he'll fix the "sappiness" of the old one, and it turns out he means making every scene with Charlie so sappy it's mawkish while making all the scenes with the bad kids sadistic and joyless. Plot-wise it was closer to the book, but character-wise it hacked up everyone and shoved them into either the sickly sweet or aggressively obnoxious category. The old one had whimsy, scares, imagination, and the true, brilliant Wonka.
@scotsman125 Ya got me. I don't think the version that became a classic even after a botched release is better than one of Burton's attempts to force his style on an existing story. I think hacking up every character to be cloying or one-dimensionally mean was a good idea. I don't think one of the best performances of Wilder's career is better than one of Depp's worst. I just hate Burton, since he made two of my all time favorite movies. Well no, this was the lie. But hey, that still counts!
@scotsman125 Well, that showed me. Your venting at this movie has without doubt left it with nothing but its awards, massive acclaim, and the fact that you only say so, or even care, because in your mind bashing this movie = building up the Burton version. The power of overblown cultism towards Burton and/or Depp!
The Johnny Depp version was good, but this is sooo much more original. I love how the oompa loompas are all played by individual actors, and Gene Wilder simply makes the perfect Willy Wonka with his strange, dry sense of humor.
So all you hating on the older movie don't even think it has beautiful happy moments like the ending Wonkavator scene or "Pure Imagination?" Oh and WAY more people are more familiar with the original Oompa Loompas and their catchy tunes--and Wonka shouting "YOU LOSE! GOOD DAY SIR!"
I hate how the top two comments are negative :( I really liked this film, I've watched it since i was little!! It's a CHILDRENS Movie, therefore its main purpose is to entertain children. Which it does. Stop with the book comparisons, almost every film never does justice to the books, look at the harry potter series!! (although they are still good!!)
@ezzibbes So because you were little when you watched this makes this one better? Certainly didn't entertain me as a kid. And quite with your stop with the book comparisons BS. At least the Harry Potter movies stay TRUE to what they're based on.
@MpregLove no i just think that the other one is based more at an older age range, whereas this one isn't. The graphics and things aren't as advanced in this and to some people that is appealing.
@ezzibbes I agree . . . it's not fair that my comments got thumbed down just because I love it--and more people do love the first movie. just watch the original old school oompa loompa video. this isn't an "I hate willy wonka" video. sure some people may not like the first one but that doesn't mean the opinions of people who love it should also automatically get trashed.
You people crying about how this movie is nothing like the book really need to get over yourselves. This movie had great acting, mostly fantastic visuals, and a solid message. Tim Burton may have been more faithful to the book, but aside from some delightfully wacky visuals, the movie itself was mediocre at best, and extremely annoying at worst. Start looking at films on their own terms instead of solely comparing them to the books.
@thrashmetalfiend You're full of shit, really. The old one had some of the worst acting for a 70s movie. Hell the acting was as bad as Twilight's acting. And please tell me exactly how the hell is the Tim Burton one mediocre at best? Because it didn't have your petty Gene Wilder in it? Or is it because his version actually did everything right that this movie did wrong?
It's true that this movie does not do the book justice at all, and compared to the book, it's not a good film adaption at all. Nonetheless, I grew up with this film and have always loved it. I believe as a film it's self, not considering the book, I believe it is a great film and Gene Wilder makes it interesting and special. I love this movie and think it is great, but that doesn't mean I believe it is anything like the book.
I can't believe how many people agree on here that this is one of the worst movies ever, while in other places everyone loves it! Just because it's not EXACTLY like the book doesn't mean it's terrible. Are the Harry Potter movies EXACTLY like the book?
the movie is supposed to be different from the book. This is totally different, it just took some aspects from the book. Just because it doesn't follow the book doesn't mean it isn't a good movie.
I saw both this one and the newer one when I was little, and I liked both, i just felt that this one had a nicer feeling to it. Just an opinion

@johnniemiec I like good movies that do a good job on their films, not mediocre book adaptions that do no justice to their source material even if I didn't like the original source material to begin with. And no, if you didn't give a shit, you wouldn't have replied to me giving me your crap.
@ChelsieBaybeeox I didn't say you were in the third grade because of you being polite. I said you were in the third grade because you still have that kiddie attitude & want your ass to get kissed.
@MpregLove how is it bad?... just because it is different from the book? who says a movie can take inspiration from something and not be different? does that instantly makes it bad? haha, not the actors (which do a good job), not the amazing settings, not the plot, just because it doesn't follow the book, doesn't mean it is a bad adaptation, if you love the book so much, stick to it.... movies HAVE to change things, superhero movies, book based movies.. you need to support your statement.
@EarthboundSNES Oh, so terrible acting, horrible casting choices, a predictable & laughable plot, unimaginative storytelling, laughable dialogue, a handful of mediocre special effects, & characters that make the characters in "Cars" look lovable don't make this movie bad? And no, you don't HAVE to change things form the original source. If the source already had shit or unbelievable crap, the yes, change them, but changing them for nothing is a sign of a shitty & mediocre director.
@MpregLove, Okay so why the hell would you come here and waste your time whining like a little bitch if you don't like this movie. What a selfish prick you are.
@Gurufail I'm with you there, I'm sick of everyone saying 'this movie is such a masterpiece, a complete classic" bullshit, i hate when movies don't follow the books at all. Charlie and the Chocolate factory had the book dead on, this movie didn't even get the name right...

many of us have grown up with the film. A movie that copies a book should never be made. there's no creativity and point to it, you might as well just read the book. plus, the willy wonka version has more of a moral value as well as great musical
@atomichead777 Aww you called me a fagot, now I have no reason to take you seriously :)
Oh bullshit. If you're going to make a movie based on a book, then keep it like the book. Just because you saw this movie & didn't bother to read the book does not mean other movies shouldn't be like the book. @atomichead777 Oh there is, because your favorite book is becoming a movie. Why wouldn't you watch it? If I said why this film sucks, I'd be typing down 3 pages worth of paragraphs. So to put down only one of the many things that are wrong with this film, lemme say that this movie has some of the worst acting ever, even for it's own time.
Yeah, but you cut off something, "because you know I'm right". And by calling me a faggot, I further know your maturity level.
@atomichead777 It's not what it was intending, I just expected good acting for a movie that came out in the 70s. Even some decent acting would have been nice. But this movie's acting, God, I've never seen such a badly acted 70s movie in my life!
@Frisby2007 before this turns into a pointless flame war, let me make this nice & sparkling clear
i think u were pissed because people were comparing this to burtons version, which seems to be the superior one for u
so, as usual for haters, u purposely searched this, typed in ur reckless comment & thought u made a point when really u seem nothing more than a useless troll
so, all in all, if u like burtons better, fine
just don't troll like an idiot, cuz when u troll, others troll back
@atomichead777 No the Burton one is way better in every way. This movie stood nothing like the book, & plus has some of the worst acting ever done in the 70s.
my favorite character in this film is veruca and my favorite demise would be violets and my second favorite demise is the golden goose room and my second favorite character would be violet

plus, i don't expect a high intelligence level on your scale, based on this quote, typed by you
"I HATE this movie more than I hate racism & white chocolate put together."
need i say more?
atomichead777 11 months ago
@atomichead777 No, I expect GOOD acting from a 70s movie. Which is what the majority of old movies were well known for.
Yes, you do.
Frisby2007 11 months ago
@Frisby2007
there are plenty of movies from the 70s with superior acting
also, i don't believe this movie intended to go for the oscars
its supposed to be a movie about oompa loompas, a magical chocolate factory, etc
im not going to be expecting pacino or deniro acting, im just going to be expecting a silly little musical
atomichead777 11 months ago

@atomichead777 I dont't know why those people evn compare them, they're not the same movie.
No I didn't search for this, it appeared in my recommended for you box (I honestly don't know why)
Fine, if you like this one, fine by me.

Great trailer, even if it does (spoiler) kinda give away the ending...but then many would have read the books by that point anyway.

i didn't say this was the best movie ever, i said its one of the best movies ever, and is better than tim burtons version. so don't give me that crap
atomichead777 1 year ago
@atomichead777 No the Burton one is way better in every way. This movie stood nothing like the book, & plus has some of the worst acting ever done in the 70s.
