you guys are lame. screw freedom of opinion. this version will always be better than the 2005 remake. for one, it has more passion. the new movie tried to focus more on comedy, and it was an epic fail.

When it comes down to it, both versions have their own perks, whether it be: adding your own twist or being true to the book, but we have to remember that the first one was made only to promote the soon to be released Wonka bars, and the second one didn't stay as true to the book as some think, Wonka's dad was never mentioned in the novel, but with that being said, I prefer the 2005 version better. :)

But after being outgunned on sites like rotten tomatoes, imdb, and even thatguywiththeglasses, the extreme cultists of Tim Burton and/or Johnny Depp, more determined than ever to build up the newer version over this one (which half of them probably never seriously watched) have found youtube an easier place to pull off hyperbolic rhetoric against this movie and anyone who praises it. (Plus they all can thumb up anyone and everyone who agrees with them a lot.)

The more obsessive members of Burton's and Depp's cults think that the mere existence of this movie is a threat to the reputations of each, especially since this older one still holds the most critical praise of the two, and so must bash it for anything they can think of.

The book is good, better than the new movie, and agaist this one is a different, more detailed version of the story.

Many people have mixed feelings about the movie. I grew up with it, so I guess I love it by default, even though it is very different from the book (which I was a fan of also). I don't think I mind it being different from the book though, the book seemed like it wouldn't transition to film very well, but it had film worthy ideas.

This movie was WAY BETTER than Burton's lame remake. Here Burton claims he'll fix the "sappiness" of the old one, and it turns out he means making every scene with Charlie so sappy it's mawkish while making all the scenes with the bad kids sadistic and joyless. Plot-wise it was closer to the book, but character-wise it hacked up everyone and shoved them into either the sickly sweet or aggressively obnoxious category. The old one had whimsy, scares, imagination, and the true, brilliant Wonka.

@scotsman125 Ya got me. I don't think the version that became a classic even after a botched release is better than one of Burton's attempts to force his style on an existing story. I think hacking up every character to be cloying or one-dimensionally mean was a good idea. I don't think one of the best performances of Wilder's career is better than one of Depp's worst. I just hate Burton, since he made two of my all time favorite movies. Well no, this was the lie. But hey, that still counts!

The Johnny Depp version was good, but this is sooo much more original. I love how the oompa loompas are all played by individual actors, and Gene Wilder simply makes the perfect Willy Wonka with his strange, dry sense of humor.

Tim Burton may have been more faithful to the book, but aside from some delightfully wacky visuals, the movie itself was mediocre at best, and extremely annoying at worst. Start looking at films on their own terms instead of solely comparing them to the books.

It's true that this movie does not do the book justice at all, and compared to the book, it's not a good film adaption at all. Nonetheless, I grew up with this film and have always loved it. I believe as a film it's self, not considering the book, I believe it is a great film and Gene Wilder makes it interesting and special. I love this movie and think it is great, but that doesn't mean I believe it is anything like the book.
