You should definitely watch it by yourself. Do not ask others to explain, as it will wreck much of the good feeling you get when you finally understand as to what happens in the movie. Gl hf with the movie. ^^
@MusicLifeSame Because the Watership Down scene wasn't included in the theatrical version of DD. It was one of the many scenes cut due to time constraints. This comes from the Director's Cut. (There's also a longer version in the 'extended/deleted scenes' section of the region 1 DVD of the theatrical release.)
I was talking to my best friend, who knew me since primary school, and I said "When Donnie Speaks out, that's kinda what I thought, I've always wanted to be able to speak my mind" and so forth and he said "that's weird, I love that movie but I didn't like Donnie as a person" and it's like this movie in particular makes people think is fantastic <3

Regardless of your race, religion, or culture, it's true. They aren't capable of fear, or love, or hatred, or any of the emotions. They're cute, and they're horny. That's about it lol

@jackylegs94 : That IS true. The bottom-line reality is that we are in charge of their world and their existence. I look at India, with their worship of cows, and I just wonder where the "wrong turn" began--what were the seeds of such an absurdity? America's turning in that direction with our worship of all animal life. "Watership Down" is actually communist propaganda.
@buzzclick500, you're a crazy cunt who thinks 'Watership Down' -- an allegory for religious faith written by a *Conservative* -- is "Communist propaganda".
buzzclick500 is a crazy cunt! And you know as much about economics and government as you do about 'Watership Down'!
@buzzclick500, if you think Richard Adams is a "Communist" and 'Watership Down' -- in which the rabbits draw strength from their religion to overcome threat and tyranny --is "Communist propaganda", you're A STUPID FUCKING DOUCHEBAG CUNT!
@coombeso The horrific "dog eat dog" theme permeates the whole movie. It tries to make one over-sensitive to competition in general, doesn't attempt to show how it can ever be anything but the senseless destructive behaviour of unthinking animals, and that is the real problem with the anmial characters. If you do believe that that is the inherent nature of competition, you are obviously not pro-capitalist yourself. Perhaps you accept it as a "necessary evil" at best.
@coombeso Actually you're quite right. I thought I understood at least that much about the movie even without having seen it, but I did watch it to confirm just after that post, and there is actually almost a good message as to government in the movie. It is far from perfect, but in any case what I said was not true.
Hahaha your all so serious about this! To anyone who really enjoyed this movie I recommend a film called 'waking life', if any of you do actually watch it, please message me back on your thoughts about it. Frank - ' why are your wearing that stupid man suit?'
@the0th are you serious? This is my favourite movie of all time. Donnie Darko answers so many questions as to what is actually going on in the world. Every time I watch it I discover things I didn't realize before. I don't understand when people dislike this movie. it poses a philosophical debate as to what our purpose in life really is. it's more than just time travel and science fiction. it has a deeper meaning.
I wish the director's cut had the extra scenes minus the stuff out of the book... it gives too much away and takes away the ambiguity that is part of what makes this movie so great.
@HIM4l1fe All you've said is that life is life. Did you mean it's still important? If so, you're contradicting yourself when saying that rabbits can't be compared with humanity. A rabbit doesn't dread death, doesn't know about it; but a human can still be concerned about it. That's human sorrow, the same thing can be felt for a broken XBox. But neither a rabbit or an XBox will mourn anything, they don't care about anything; it's only their instinct to stay alive- eat and fuck.
@RyderRocks73 Disagree with you and Donnie. Rabbits very well can be afraid of death and their own lives. Otherwise they would not sense danger or have any need for it.
@FreshNapp The only reason they sense danger is so that they can stay alive, so there can be more rabbits. They don't take any particular pleasure from being alive.
@azmanabdula I think he envies the rabbits. Unlike him, they're not tormented by whatever their place in the world is. Like him (especially after getting a girlfriend), they just want to have sex till they drop dead, uncaring of all else. The difference being that he doesn't want it by nature so much as to escape his torment, because, at the end of the day, he does care. If Donnie were a rabbit, all his problems would be a non-issue.
@azmanabdula And according to his reasoning, they're all the better off for it. He starts his rant with "why should we care" and proceeds to indicate in at least two occasions how the rabbits don't care, and not in a derogatory manner either. I think Donnie wants to not care, mostly about himself. Gretchen wants to care, mostly about him, as her retort is mostly about empathy. I think that's what they're really at odds about.
@azmanabdula I think she's trying to reach out to him, not blow him off. Donnie's rant betrays itself, in that he's so passionate about giving in to apathy. He's sorta like the predator in this scene, in that his ability to articulate and make a point comes out at it's fullest and most agressive. Gretchen can only make a relatively poor protest in return, but you can somehow tell she feels her words, and the way she looks a him at the end is anything but uncaring.
but it sounds like she was just saying that we were meant to go along with the idea that these rabbit reflect humanity....(but had no idea on how to back that up)
i like this scene because it sort of pushes the viewer take a stance between the two instead of just observing donnie's philosophy and assuming it's correct.
this is the only scene where i don't agree with donnie, even though he is usually pretty smart. It's obvious that the rabbits were, like the teacher said, suppose to be "us" aka represent mankind. If mankind were in that situation, or if rabbits were as smart as humans etc.
Yes, if it was a documentary about rabbits dying, then i can understand if someone were emotionless towards that, but this cartoon is no such thing.
My problem with the director's cut is that it felt too contrived and took an already perfect movie and made less and less enjoyable. Some of the scenes were nice to see, but I would have liked them better as deleted scenes rather than having to watch a imperfect version of a perfect movie to watch some of those great scenes that were missing.
Donnie's got a point though i've got to say that the rabbits had emotions by the way the story was told. Ms. Pomeroy was right about the symbolism of the rabbits and that they should be treated the way they appeared on the story. Darko's point on death of a specie "could" be wrong, i mean animals can somehow show affection on their own way and also affect their owners/care takers. When those animals die, they'd somehow make their owner upset or sad in a way.
I read Watership down last year in high school, it blew me away, they are probably the only rabbits that aren't only cute and horney, but prophetic and disgustingly violent.
I like the scene when he's hypnotized saying "I think about fucking..." "What about your family?" "I don't think about fucking my family... that's gross!" XD
HOLY SHIT THE BUNNY MOVIE IS BACK!!! I used to watch this at my grandma's house all the time. scared the shit outta me. I THOUGHT I'D LEFT IT ALL BEHIND!!!
I get what Donnie said, but I think the rabbits are supposed to symbolize humans. And I completely disagree with what the girl said, 'The author cares for them so we care for them' that's not the point of literature. Literature isn't supposed to be followers doing and believing what a leader says, it's supposed to be one person expressing views and allowing others to form their own views based on what they have said. At least, that is what it is to me.
@123thejakes Watership down is about a bunch of rabbits struggle for survival. Its one of the best books of all time, it has lots of hidden meanings and metaphors, and its creepy and disturbing too, both these movies are my favorites.
@123thejakes BUNNIES! Cute little adorable bunnies! At least that's what my dad told me when he said I should read it. I was ten and thought it was really cool, but then they started to kill each other, and I thought it was even cooler! It's a marvelous book and film, but I'd definitely recommend reading the novel first.
@pluginbaby05 its part of the director's cut. make sure you see it bro. so so explanatory and it's like watching the film again for the first time, which in its self is an amazing experience.
Wow, this Director's Cut version of this scene is quite different from the deleted scene version on the DVD of the theatrical release. I didn't realize how different the two were until I tried to get them to sync--but that's impossible. The deleted scene version is longer and cut differently.
@SirSmokeify theres 20 minutes of extra footage plus edited scenes. Both movies are intact but the directors cut explains so much more and has a lot more emotion to it.
Ok I think i get it now. Donnie here thinks in the beggining that bunnies are useless and the bunnies play the role of the manipulated living and the humans around him. Why should Donnie die for these worthless humans who are way less smart then him (Frank the bunny is a metaphor for that). In the end he realizes that these bunnies are important to so he dies for them. Kind of like Jesus, who dies for us worthless sinners when he could have ruled the throne. The director of this movieischristian
@BeAnBeAn22 frank is also the manipulated dead if you read the pages in the directors cut, frank went to get beer and killed gretchen then donnie shoots him
"The God Machine, that's what saved the rabbits"
Explains the driving force behind everything that happens in this movie, doesn't it? I'm not religious, and I think it pulls the story down a little, but what drives everyone to help Donnie save the universe is appareantly God.

Wow, this Director's Cut version of this scene is quite different from the deleted scene version on the DVD of the theatrical release. I didn't realize how different the two were until I tried to get them to sync--but that's impossible. The deleted scene version is longer and cut differently.

@killerkombat428 Thats the beauty of it. Wiki always helps, check out the directors cut explaination in wiki,
philhunter2005 1 year ago
@SirSmokeify theres 20 minutes of extra footage plus edited scenes. Both movies are intact but the directors cut explains so much more and has a lot more emotion to it.

Hey! They're watching Watership Down. One of my favorite movies in one of my favorite movies :D
mouse264 1 year ago
Ok I think i get it now. Donnie here thinks in the beggining that bunnies are useless and the bunnies play the role of the manipulated living and the humans around him. Why should Donnie die for these worthless humans who are way less smart then him (Frank the bunny is a metaphor for that). In the end he realizes that these bunnies are important to so he dies for them. Kind of like Jesus, who dies for us worthless sinners when he could have ruled the throne. The director of this movieischristian
BeAnBeAn22 1 year ago
@BeAnBeAn22 frank is also the manipulated dead if you read the pages in the directors cut, frank went to get beer and killed gretchen then donnie shoots him
