yep.. that's a pretty sweet shaving horse, i hand hewd mine at my cabin site using all hand tools... BTW, that's a pretty nice draw knife you've got there, looks like it may have been your grand daddys.
I thought of something else though..if you do use an auger bit, you could make a wooden T-handle for it that could be removed and take up much less room in your pack.
I need to make one of these for Projects in the woods. What could I use to make the holes for the legs to go into. I would be making it in the woods so electric tools arent an option.
I think you could use an ordinary spade bit chucked into an old fashioned brace. YOu could also use an auger bit, but they are much more expensive. I used a 1 3/4 inch bit but that's probably overkill, 1 1/4 should be just fine.
Hello Karsefni, what a coincidence, I making a very similar all-wood horse at the moment, also an English style, think it would have more uses to bowmaking than a dumbhead. Don't have such decent timber as ash though, just plain pine bench and birch for the parts. I had also made just three legs for mine but found out it wasn't very stable so I went for four instead,
beautiful shaving horse. I have to build one like that. Thumb up!

Hi! Wow that's great. I would like to see your horse when you get done. You should make a video of it!
