When I was a kid, we used to get milipedes in our basement. Obviously nothing THAt big.

I used to think they were dangerous. :P

I did notice an odd, chemical smell when trying to sweep them away. Do they have scent glands to ward or predators or something?

Does that giant one have any natural defenses?

@tokimasa121 Millipedes always spray some funny smelling brownish stuff on your hands and around their enclosure. It isn't dangerous but Its best to just wash your hands when you got it on your hands.

@tokimasa121 centipedes have a lot less legs, are a lot faster and especially the tropical ones of the Scolopendra genus are dangerous. Centipedes are carnivores, They eat anything they can get, even rats. Millipedes are omnivores and a lot more friendly. usually. Even I wouldn't want a centipede walk on me without 2 inch of solid titanium between it and my skin..

Strangely though, snakes don't scare me at all. I actually love snakes (although I'd never touch a poisonous one, or one that can constrict you). I would have no problem with a harmless snake slithering up my arm, but millipedes creep me out. I guess it's because the latter have got all those legs?

@kzalldaz That was most likely a centipede I think. so far I know these don't even have anything to penetrate the skin with. Centipedes and millipedes sometimes get confused.

I love holding giant millipedes! Sadly, the importation of them into the US is illegal now, so breeders (who now require permits) are stuck working with a population that may go stale in the new few years if the law isn't/hasn't changed.

Hi, gallon30! I just viewed this. Hadn't before because the giant milli is not a new animal for me. Have them, handle them. But, they never "spray" me. Weird, that.

They do poop alot and the kids at the museum that see this happen on my hand think it's funny and gross (memorable yuck factor in demos- heh). Nervous ones occasionally release a defensive brown liquid that stains my hand but stain's gone in a day or 2.

We breed and raise giant millies at the museum now. Can't import them anymore.

it's not an insect, the heaviest insect is the weta, 110 grams, second heaviest is heteropteryx dilatata, 65 gram. but this one is the second heaviest millipede, heaviest is 95 gram.
