  • My sister was hit by a car 2 years ago tonight around 1130 pm. The weather was just as it is this night. In her cirgarette case was a note that said please play Pilgrim by Steve Earle at my funeral. I had never heard it before. It was so appopriate for my sis,as she had 3 adult boys she raised as a single mom. I love her and miss her everyday. I can get through this song,on most days without crying now..but not on this day. <3 Cathy..you are misssed

  • The way the magic of this song works is this: The catchy simplicity of the lyric and tune causes one to sing along either aloud or internally, and thus become the character chanting about one's own temporariness in one's physical life experience. In the realization of that temporariness, we are in complete alignment with our Inner Being, who knows the truth of that, and in response we receive the emotional resonance of RELIEF, which is the signal of our alignment. It is brilliant and delicious.

  • me to

  • me to..

  • If you love this music and the allegory inside the lyric of great American songwriting, look up Adam Stetson Telluride on facebook.

He was working on this song with a buddy two days before he passed brutally too soon and abruptly.

His buddy sang The Pilgrim for us at the wake, haunting, and surreal, I cannot help but weep every time I hear it.

  • one word... Amen...

  • this will be played at my funeral...along with Ripple ...

  • @JeffreySGriffin17 FANTASTIC!!!!

  • We all gotta go sometime people. Hope he had a good life making good music.

  • I didn't know Roy had died. I used to work with him some. Mostly with John Hartford. One helluva bass player and just a great guy.

  • HE is just as good now as he was yrs ago !!! awsome song writer and singer !!

  • Just as pure as 100 + years ago. nice!!!!

  • Super! while not a religious person this is a wonderful song about one's belief that all of the trials and tribulations of life can lead to something better. One of the best pieces of instrumentation and blends of voice I've heard.

  • Probably the one the most heartfelt, spiritual songs ever penned...Thanks for posting!

  • We're all travelling the long, weary road together...pilgrims on the road, boys...this is one of my favorite CD's--thanks for posting it for others to enjoy...Peace.

  • too bad we cannot hear the version on the movie....with Earle and Friends.

  • gdrunner abt says it all.

  • gdrunner about says it right.

  • Who in the devil has an objection to this song. Though I'd ask but I really would not want to know the reason

  • who is the douche that disliked this? how can i punch him/her in the face?

  • I first heard this song in the movie "You Can Count on Me" from 2000. Songs from "The Mountain" are featured prominently and Pilgrim closes out the movie in an amazing scene/shot. Check out the movie if you can. It is one of the best American movies of the last 10 years.

  • The Norwegian version by Henning Kvitnes made nr 1.

  • poor troll.

  • Love it. Thanks so much for posting.

  • This beautifull songs brings tears in my eyes.

We will sing this song at a memorial evening for a friend who was a big Steve Earle fan and one of my band mates in Sweetport blues...

    He died a year ago....

He was the greatest Washboard player eve lived....

  • This song's incredible. Found out about it from a bunch of friends of mine who are audio engineers. We played it as exit music for my father's funeral.

  • @suckapunkjones as sad as it is, it is absolutely the perfect funeral song. Melancholy but uplifting. Sorry about your dad.

  • @chillman4130 Love seeing love on a youtube post opposed to hate. Cheers to music healing the soul

  • @suckapunkjones

And it is a good choice for an exit from this life something bouncy about it

  • I prefer the version on the soundtrack of "you can count on me" because of the special instrumentation in the end of the film and beginning of this song.

  • so beautiful brought tears to my eyes

  • Very Nice to see this online. I will never forget this song. :)

  • So touching. Beautiful arrangement.

  • Good song. The norwegian artist Henning Kvitnes made a norwegian version of this back in 2006, and I think Kvitnes`version is even better than this. His version is called Guttær.

  • Beautiful! Anyone have the guitar chords for this?

  • @alaskaozzy Are you serious? It's G-C-D - 3 chords like all good country songs. You just mix 'em up a little when you play it. You'll figure it out.

  • Oh Man, Oh Man, this song touches deep. It makes reality acceptable in a friendly way.

  • this will be the opening song at my funeral service...

    what else can i say?...

  • WOW and Emmylou too.Awesome.

  • chills in my spine every time I hear this...well done Steve

  • Christains who are saved souls because they trust in the the shed blood of Jesus for payment of sins knowing they cannot do anything to earn or loose their souls are pilgrims. One day the saved will be face to face with Christ Jesus. Amen. John 3:3 ;o)

  • this song may be a tribute to the old country gospel standard "I am a Pilgrim"

  • this song reminds me of my army days,,,

  • Thank you for the video, and yes, my sons Jt and Taylor and I, along with many many others are singing in the final chorus. Steve wrote this song the morning of the funeral for Roy. This was a nice vid. Thank you

  • thanks for the upload always think of my dad who introduced me to steve earle

  • Thank you!

Nice video, though might be good to include a photo of Roy Huskey, Jr., for whose funeral this was written. Bass player on Train a COmin'.

  • I had no idea this was written for Roy Huskey Jr! Thanks for that terrific bit of knowledge!

  • I thought it was on the liner notes, but they just dedicate the album to Huskey. Earle talked about this as a tribute in interviews at the time and there are twenty or so friends and family of Huskey singing on the choruses.

    Thanks again

  • This is such an awesome performance. Yes, the whole album is incredible, not sure if this is my fave, whichever I'm listening too is my fave, I guess. Thank you for sharing it.

  • Love the duet with Emmylou. But ... "best" song on the album? His duet with Iris DeMent will get to you, too. Not to mention "Dixieland." IMHO

  • Thanks for posting this. I've loved this song ever since I first heard it. So simple and yet such quality and depth. Thanks

  • Once in a blue moon a song comes along that makes me an instant fan for life. So it was with this song that I discovered at the end of the film "You can count on me." Seen Steve live 3 times since and look forward to many more.

  • Thanks for uploading this - 'appreciate it! :O)
