valid points no doubt. but there are ways of incorporating percussion. im in a group that doest have a banjo. to fill the void i use small drums, the snare being similar in size and timbre of a banjo. i also use a small tambourine, floor tom and hi hat. the group is called Leadfoot from chicago if you want to have a listen.
No offense but it's "traditions" like this that ruin folk music. Every bluegrass band I hear sounds EXACTLY the same, no innovation. My brother told me that to technically be considered "bluegrass" you have to have banjo, guitar, fiddle & mandolin in your lineup. Well if that's the case then bluegrass is just a novelty act and where I come from it generally is. Why don't we start thinking outside the box like the inventors of American folk music originally did.
Jimmy Martin Jr. ( ARG) played drums for his dad. Enough said! Bill didn't have one for a reason ...nor did he have a trumpet, tuba, or sax. Lets just keep one thing in this country pure and let it be TRADITIONAL BLUEGRASS AND NOT LET IT GET WASHED OUT LIKE COUNTRY DID...WC.
Hey rtcarpe2! First of all, hats off for "bluegrass balls"-- I'm storing that phrase away for a rainy jam session. I think it really comes down to how drums are deployed. If percussion is just underscoring the beat and straightening out the tempos, then I tend to feel it has a deadening influence. Check out the contemporary string band Chatham County Line. They use drums on occasion, but I think they swing a bit more freely when they do without percussion. I really appreciate the input!
i've always sort of had the notion that bluegrass deserved a drummer. i think if a drummer is dynamic, it could possibly project the music to new heights during the jams in which there is not a lot of technical elements going on. i just get bluegrass balls sometimes, and i always felt that if they had percussion that it would be beautiful.
Hallo ABmorris!-- Although my surname is German, I confess that my Deutsch is so schlecht that I have no idea what you're saying, though I gather you're a Kruger fan like me. I've got one or two more Kruger videos up my sleeve. Stay tuned...and thanks for the input.
@secondcousincurly I don't mean to hi-jack the comments of this video, but you wouldn't happen to have footage of The Kruger Brothers performing "People Get Ready" on the Hillside Stage on Sunday afternoon at Merlefest 2010 would you? It was a very moving experience for me and I would love to find some footage of it.
@LockWesMonster LWM-- I did get a recording of "People Get Ready"-- but I thought it was their set at the Americana Stage. Anyway, I expect to post it once I've gotten a few works-in-progress out the door. Have you seen my video of the Krugers doing "Sixteen Tons?" It's available on my channel (just click my name in blue to go there). Perhaps not as moving a song, but a killer version. Yer Pal-- Curly
Hallo Krüger giele! i han ech in Bärn ghört mit emene Drummer. Me muess ke redneck si für das nid guet ds finde. Höret uf dermit. Göht zrügg e chli meh zu de Wurzle. Dir sit immer no innovativ gnue.

Also I would consider the Krueger Bros tremendous instrumentalists but NOT Bluegrass..Your explaination of bluegrass back beat is spot on!
