Mr Pinker is just another modern day sophist and his pseudo-explanations are a whole lot of hooey that befuddle other people by constructing false data and presenting them as a scientific fact that is seemingly irrefutable. Who is he really? Not a philosopher or a scientist but only a linguistic maven who uses rhetorical gimmicks to dismiss ideas that he does not like.
I like Steven Pinker but I was rather bemused by his claim elsewhere that libertarianism is predicated on the notion that all humans are morally good.
i think the same about mutual respect and words, but i cant say that the euphemistic words havent achieved there goal to an extent, no one gets angry and calls someone a 'afro-american' or a 'minority', and fuck has a way different tone to it then intercourse.
Quite interesting video. Anyway, I would suspect that there are more reasons why some words become dated and archaic and other words replace them. And maybe it's normal - the language that would't change would be dead and boring. But yes, some English words really change too quickly - and I am glad I am not the only one who is annoyed...
"What is above all needed is to let the meaning choose the word, and not the other way around.
Probably it is better to put off using words as long as possible and get one's meaning as clear as one can through pictures and sensations. Afterward one can choose -- not simply accept -- the phrases that will best cover the meaning, and then switch round and decide what impressions one's words are likely to make on another person."
Sheldon Richman had a post that was titled 'Markets don't ration!' From the title, I incorrectly assumed that he was making a catallactic/individualistic critique of collective terms that distort and homogenize the expression of those individuals' actions.
Instead he was about the rationing of goods by government
Then it hit me: how many statist-action terms get a connotational boost by a homonym.
I don't agree with this video. As a libertarian I pride myself for having the philosophy that preaches self-ownership, voluntary interaction, and non-violence. I do not use the phrase "laissez-faire" as a label of my viewpoints because that phrase portrays me as a whiney ass bitch who wants to get away with everything.
"So you want absolutely no regulations of the economy?" with "Yes." What you should say is "No, I do not support state violence" since that spins the debate into your favor.
Completely disregarding the importance of words limits your effectiveness as a debater.
Pinker has interesting book, called "How the Mind Works" or something like that, Wherein he likes to blur the line between philosophy and psychology. I think you can find the audio book on youtube.
It's always nice to see the total absurdity of "political correctness" illustrated clearly.
The development of more "sensitive" terms creates an arbitrary standard of classification that, if not abided by, produces a needlessly offensive climate that would not exist otherwise. It's all terribly ironic.

I realized an interestingly ambiguous word today:
'ration'
Sheldon Richman had a post that was titled 'Markets don't ration!' From the title, I incorrectly assumed that he was making a catallactic/individualistic critique of collective terms that distort and homogenize the expression of those individuals' actions.
Instead he was about the rationing of goods by government

others include:
order(s), law, etc

Plus, it's not a good idea to respond to:
"So you want absolutely no regulations of the economy?" with "Yes." What you should say is "No, I do not support state violence" since that spins the debate into your favor.
