I noted that NEITHER unit advised you ( that you went PAST " North Street " - at the very beginning of the Video - Shouldn't they advise you that you drove PAST the suggested route ????
I want an iPhone really bad, but I can't give up Google free turn-by-turn voice navigation, it's awesome.. Unfortunately Garmin and TOMTOM cannot compete with Google's GPS.. at least not yet.
@NormanE123 I have them in the description as well as on-screen for the first few minutes... Magellan Premium Car Kit and the TomTom Car Kit. That's exactly what they're both called. It's probably harder to get them now because I think they've both been discontinued if I'm not mistaken.
Just an observation.... in the description you said you used two Iphone 4S's. This video was post Jan. 2011, curiously the IPhone 4 S didnt get released till Oct 2011 ??
Everyone says something different, so I was hoping you could help out.
Is it true that you DON'T need any mobile network to use the Tomtom app. I'm from Belgium, Europe, and it's quite expensive to use mobile data in other countries, therefore my question. :)
(also, you might know, does Navfree gps use mobile data?)
@iiiAwesome That is correct, you don't need data. There's even an option within the TomTom app to turn data off completely so that it doesn't attempt to access the data network at all (ie. traffic services will be disabled, etc.). Also, the complete maps are installed on the device.
I have a Garmin Nuvi 1690 which is pretty good, but I am getting an android phone soon, I'm wondering if it is worth getting rid of the Nuvi and downloading an app? (possibly tom tom if they have maps for Israel) If it is just as good (or better?) I'd rather consolidate to one device. Thanks for the cool video.
You'd need to purchase TomTom Europe in the App Store as opposed to TomTom USA. It lists all of the countries that TomTom Europe includes in the App Store as well.
@Modestasgailius I bought TomTom Europe and I go from Italy to Germany without any problem - great navi app! With the TomTom Car Kit for iPhone it's the best navigation experience on iPhone!
so i have been using the tomtom for about a month and i realized that it takes a LONG time to recognize where you are when you plug the kit in to your car. for example last time you used the kit was yesturday at point "A" and today you're far away from point "A" but when you turn on the app with the kit plugged in it still reads that you're at point "A" instead of the current point you're at. give it a few tries plugging and unplugging the ipod for a few minutes it'll recognize where you are.
@kizo13 Yes I have the Navigon app as well. Not sure you'd want it now however since the last update took away free maps for life, you'll now have to pay for map updates. The on-screen text in the map view with the Navigon app is way too small IMO if you have it mounted to your windshield. I personally like the TomTom app much better. Routing with the IQ routes, presentation, and options are better. When you consider TomTom still offers free map updates with their app, it tips the scale.
Best app review I have seen in a long time. Thanks a lot. Did you pay for both apps. Im actually looking to get a free Navigation for my Iphone 4 white.
The Garmin app offers free lifetime Maps and Traffic. TomTom charges $19.99 a year for traffic updates. The Garmin app only uses 8.4 MB while the TomTom on board maps will take up to 1.4 GB on the iPhone something to think about if you only have an 8 GB iPhone. You can buy a Motorola bluetooth that will allow audio to be play over the car stereo that will put the sound quality in this video to shame.
the last line is important when driving in the country with no cell signal. also, just using the iPhone maps app in the city, it often loses direction - so perhaps the actual device (antennae) is better than just using the phone app ??? Still considering.
I took the TomTom GPS for a highway test (i dont have the kit and the iPhone4 is not active but GPS still works) anyways, it seemed as if TomTom got confused while i was on the highway, I didn't know that when it wants you to take an exit that it shows a still picture of the different paths so i thought it was recalculating something and I ended up missing my exit, after that, the GPS showed that i was in the mid. of nowhere, then i just put it down, and used my own road smarts to get back home.
he mentioned the audio warning when 5mph overspeed limit with garmin but didn't seem to notice why the garmin speedo glows red sometimes...its does this to warn you that you are exceeding the posted limit! something he did more than 3 or 4 times during his trip - but nothing from tomtom - so the garmin has a brilliant function that may save you a speeding fine or 3 or 4...lol.
I prefer tomtom because u don't need data. All the maps are preloaded. So if your in another country or don't have data it could be very useful. And what if your driving long. I'm sure you dont wanna use data the whole time. Tomtom just uses the GPS signal (which is not data)
I've been a Garmin lover for a really long time, but after the last nav update it'd been giving me some screwy instructions, like the one@05:30.
In many cases, I don't know the area, so I follow Garmin's instructions... only to find out that I could have just turned right - like the situation @05:30
Nah, the GPS navigator can't know if you're going to stop or you're proceeding as normal, so it gives you the smoothest path according to speed, especially right after route reckoning.
I have a windows mobile 6.5 smartphone, and I prefer tomtom. The interface of garmin is better, so do graphics, lots of POIs (in big cities like new york, las vegas, etc maybe there's no difference, but where I live tomtom doesn't have much POIs), I only don't like that robotic voice.
nice video but i got a ques. that does anyone of them have trucks navigation with truck route restriction and some other truck tools. i use google maps navi. nw but they are wrong sometimes.
Interesting. I actually prefer the Garmin visuals. My friend has a Mio and it does the same thing the Tom Tom does here...where slight bends in the road look more like actual turns.
Fantastic review. I've had the Navigon app for sometime now ($14.99). It's decent, but there's plenty of room for improvement. Either one of these would be a better choice, but the TomTom is just more appealing to me overall.
Tomtom is WAAAAYY better, i use that also, it works perfect!
