  • does the tom tom app use 3g data

  • e schiaccia sto pedale!! XD

  • I've used both and TomTom was much better, smoother and more informative that Garmin.

  • I noted that NEITHER unit advised you ( that you went PAST " North Street " - at the very beginning of the Video - Shouldn't they advise you that you drove PAST the suggested route ????

  • FINALLY - I found "your" Comparison Video to be VERY HELPFUL ... I will be Buying the TOM TOM ! * FLORIDA - here I come! * ; P

  • You can buy windscreen mounts from RAM MOUNTS....

  • 5:32 garmin fail.

  • @elmayimbe4eva27 It's the same for iPhone 3G/3Gs with a little adapter for iPhone 4/4S included.

  • I want an iPhone really bad, but I can't give up Google free turn-by-turn voice navigation, it's awesome.. Unfortunately Garmin and TOMTOM cannot compete with Google's GPS.. at least not yet.

  • What kind of phone stand are you using for your car?

  • @NormanE123 Do you mean the windshield mount?

  • yeah, what kind is it?

  • @NormanE123 I have them in the description as well as on-screen for the first few minutes... Magellan Premium Car Kit and the TomTom Car Kit. That's exactly what they're both called. It's probably harder to get them now because I think they've both been discontinued if I'm not mistaken.

  • Just an observation.... in the description you said you used two Iphone 4S's. This video was post Jan. 2011, curiously the IPhone 4 S didnt get released till Oct 2011 ??

  • @teamsarcasm It actually says two iPhone 4's, as in plural. That would've been a nice trick though if I could've used 4S's before they were released.

  • @NuRevu It should be written as iPhone 4s not 4's.

  • @TheRealEmskiHelp Now that I'm sure would confuse people.

  • Everyone says something different, so I was hoping you could help out.

Is it true that you DON'T need any mobile network to use the Tomtom app. I'm from Belgium, Europe, and it's quite expensive to use mobile data in other countries, therefore my question. :)

(also, you might know, does Navfree gps use mobile data?)

  • @iiiAwesome That is correct, you don't need data. There's even an option within the TomTom app to turn data off completely so that it doesn't attempt to access the data network at all (ie. traffic services will be disabled, etc.). Also, the complete maps are installed on the device.

  • @NuRevu Okay great, thanks a lot! Just installed Tomtom!

  • The car at 03:12 runs a stop sign, Just to cut you off. There's no app for that.

  • You lost me at magellan car kit. Why was Garmin with Magellan car kit?

    Doesn't Garmin their own.

  • @Dmachanic No, Garmin never made an iPhone car kit. You can pretty much use any nav app with any iPhone car kit it doesn't matter.

  • Shalom to my friends @ Queen Anne Rd, Teaneck :)

I have a Garmin Nuvi 1690 which is pretty good, but I am getting an android phone soon, I'm wondering if it is worth getting rid of the Nuvi and downloading an app? (possibly tom tom if they have maps for Israel) If it is just as good (or better?) I'd rather consolidate to one device. Thanks for the cool video.

  • You'd need to purchase TomTom Europe in the App Store as opposed to TomTom USA. It lists all of the countries that TomTom Europe includes in the App Store as well.

  • Does It work i mean in EU countries well?

  • Does TomTom work if i want to go on holidays From Netheralands to Austria? Please answer

  • @Modestasgailius I bought TomTom Europe and I go from Italy to Germany without any problem - great navi app! With the TomTom Car Kit for iPhone it's the best navigation experience on iPhone!

  • useful video man ! Thanks a lot.

  • so i have been using the tomtom for about a month and i realized that it takes a LONG time to recognize where you are when you plug the kit in to your car. for example last time you used the kit was yesturday at point "A" and today you're far away from point "A" but when you turn on the app with the kit plugged in it still reads that you're at point "A" instead of the current point you're at. give it a few tries plugging and unplugging the ipod for a few minutes it'll recognize where you are.

  • @elmayimbe4eva27 Thanks. I got mine at a Best Buy earlier this year.

  • Do any of you have any experience with the TomTom 2535? Is it worth buying?

  • looks like garmin is confused a lot

  • NuRevu have you tried Navigon? It would be nice to get your opinion on it in comparison to the tomtom.

  • @kizo13 Yes I have the Navigon app as well. Not sure you'd want it now however since the last update took away free maps for life, you'll now have to pay for map updates. The on-screen text in the map view with the Navigon app is way too small IMO if you have it mounted to your windshield. I personally like the TomTom app much better. Routing with the IQ routes, presentation, and options are better. When you consider TomTom still offers free map updates with their app, it tips the scale.

  • @NuRevu Thanks for the reply, very helpful :)

  • Best app review I have seen in a long time. Thanks a lot. Did you pay for both apps. Im actually looking to get a free Navigation for my Iphone 4 white.

  • @kalsapower Thanks, yes I paid for both.

  • The Garmin app offers free lifetime Maps and Traffic. TomTom charges $19.99 a year for traffic updates. The Garmin app only uses 8.4 MB while the TomTom on board maps will take up to 1.4 GB on the iPhone something to think about if you only have an 8 GB iPhone. You can buy a Motorola bluetooth that will allow audio to be play over the car stereo that will put the sound quality in this video to shame.

  • Tom Tom is a bit slower too. Garmin is definitely the better of the two apps for GPS.

  • the last line is important when driving in the country with no cell signal. also, just using the iPhone maps app in the city, it often loses direction - so perhaps the actual device (antennae) is better than just using the phone app ??? Still considering.

  • @SSuperCuriouss or nokia ovi maps, you dont need internet

  • Bar in sucks

  • wow, i actually watched that ad in the beginning..

  • how do u zoom out on the tomtom map while its navigating? i can see the garmin have the + and - signs for zooming in and out. tomtom cant do that??

  • @AllThingsAviation You would just use pinch gestures to pan/zoom the map view.

  • I wish I had enough time on my hands to do this kind of stuff.

  • I took the TomTom GPS for a highway test (i dont have the kit and the iPhone4 is not active but GPS still works) anyways, it seemed as if TomTom got confused while i was on the highway, I didn't know that when it wants you to take an exit that it shows a still picture of the different paths so i thought it was recalculating something and I ended up missing my exit, after that, the GPS showed that i was in the mid. of nowhere, then i just put it down, and used my own road smarts to get back home.

  • he mentioned the audio warning when 5mph overspeed limit with garmin but didn't seem to notice why the garmin speedo glows red sometimes...its does this to warn you that you are exceeding the posted limit! something he did more than 3 or 4 times during his trip - but nothing from tomtom - so the garmin has a brilliant function that may save you a speeding fine or 3 or 4...lol.

  • I prefer tomtom because u don't need data. All the maps are preloaded. So if your in another country or don't have data it could be very useful. And what if your driving long. I'm sure you dont wanna use data the whole time. Tomtom just uses the GPS signal (which is not data)

  • I've been a Garmin lover for a really long time, but after the last nav update it'd been giving me some screwy instructions, like the one@05:30.

In many cases, I don't know the area, so I follow Garmin's instructions... only to find out that I could have just turned right - like the situation @05:30

    Thanks for posting the side-by-side!

  • How does the battery hold ? Can you get somewhere without the iPhone 4 discharging?

  • Cellular data is required for the Garmin app. Very useful information .... I didnt know that... thank you.

  • TomTom wont shut the hell up so I can hear Garmin's directions.

  • love this video better than the other ones, you were actually which one was talking initially!

  • the garmin went a litle crazy at 5:31

  • @trongie

    haha yes :)

  • @trongie

Nah, the GPS navigator can't know if you're going to stop or you're proceeding as normal, so it gives you the smoothest path according to speed, especially right after route reckoning.

  • Tom tom in an iphone should be internet online?

  • I have a windows mobile 6.5 smartphone, and I prefer tomtom. The interface of garmin is better, so do graphics, lots of POIs (in big cities like new york, las vegas, etc maybe there's no difference, but where I live tomtom doesn't have much POIs), I only don't like that robotic voice.

  • I've never used it but I think tomtom looks better than navigon

  • nice video but i got a ques. that does anyone of them have trucks navigation with truck route restriction and some other truck tools. i use google maps navi. nw but they are wrong sometimes.

  • imo tomtom is better

  • Love this guy's Voice Thumbs UP!

  • Haha I know the ShopRite you were heading for. Same one I go to.

  • Was going to get tomtom, but 1.4 GB is WAY too much space, and garmin wont work for me, so...

  • Could anyone recommend any other good gps navigation apps for iOS devices other than the garmin and tomtom?

  • @jazzyrendy Navigon

  • Interesting. I actually prefer the Garmin visuals. My friend has a Mio and it does the same thing the Tom Tom does here...where slight bends in the road look more like actual turns.

  • @saprater25 I like the garmin visuals too, I had gotten used to them, but for some reason the garmimn street pilot app doesn't wprl fpr ,e

  • Do these use data?

  • How Much Cash iPhone 4?

  • how about navigon vs tomtom?

  • Every company out there making GPS software for the iPhone seems very incompetent.

  • Thank you for this review.

  • хотелось бы конечно гармин+карты оффлайн, или томтом с БОЛЕЕ ПОДРОБНЫМИ картами.

  • very good and thorough review! thanks

  • Well I'm looking at the app on the itouch dies that effect it?

  • there is no garmin street pilot in the app store

  • great review. Thanks.

  • nice comparison. Thanks.

  • I bought a TomTom car kit, does any1 know or have they gotten it working with an Ipod Touch 4?

  • who ever cleaned the snow on the roads at 4:07 is stupid and clearly have to be fierd

  • Fantastic review. I've had the Navigon app for sometime now ($14.99). It's decent, but there's plenty of room for improvement. Either one of these would be a better choice, but the TomTom is just more appealing to me overall.

  • The fact that the Tom Tom saves the maps...I think it's the winner...I don't want to end up paying a lot of money to keep downloading data..

Thanks for the comparison...I learned a lot with this video :)
