  • you are so awesome

  • thank you so much

  • Absolutely fantastic, thanks ;) I've mentioned you on my blog, if you don't mind ;) Thanks a lot! ;) klusik.cz/cs/article/jak-na-bici-z-tool

  • 10 people couldn't figure out which tom was which.

  • sat there for like 10 or 15 mins to memorize the feet :/ damn I suck...

  • I wish you did the poly rhythm at the "feel inspired to fathom the power to bathe in the fountain..." part in Lateralus.

  • A drum set like this kind is something I wouldn't be able to learn easily because it would seem difficult to practice when there is no actual music.. unlike instruments not percussion.

  • Are all these rythms in 4/4?

  • @Gagoik The Lateralus pattern is in 5/4. Idk about Reflection

  • The Lateralus pattern is always changing time signature so i don't even bother counting while playing songs like that

  • @TheSicknessIsTheCure Reflection is 4/4.

  • @Gagoik Very few complex Tool songs are in 4/4, and even then Tool has changing time signatures so counting out the song isnt going to help. You just try to understand the patterns and listen to the song enough times and you can grasp it.

  • Great info!!!

  • you could also listen to drum tracks those really help when you can find them.

  • Love this guy. Really helped me learning Tool on drums.

  • or...or....you could read tabs.

  • @CenturyofSolitude or... or... you could fall on a tab that's totally wrong if you compare it with the song.

  • i love how perfectly in-tune your toms are

  • This is an incredible lesson. I'd love to see more.

  • I love tool and I love yor drummin are u thinkin of puttin some apc songs on?

  • I have no idea what any of this means and im not a drummer....but I will watch every video you make my friend. I find it fascinating.

  • Omg

All of ya are commenting this.

He gives a fuk for ur badass comments.

He shared this only for help person who wanted that.

So dont comment like "i got bored" or "ur technic is bad or whateva" cos ur ego will not grow from this..

  • @OmenGrand Learn to speak - or type - you fuck.

I might agree with you, but I have no idea what you're saying.

  • Im sure his intentions are noble but this guy doesnt know what hes talking about. Sorry.

  • hey man all i go to say is thank you for all your vidoes you have tought me so much by just putitng these vidoes up. your style is insane i wish i could play like you haha iv only been playen the drums for about 9 months and tool got me into them so far i can play the pot and jambi becuase of you so thanks bro and keep up your kickass drumming

  • Dude your technique is sloppy choppy and very loose.

  • @laudiumWP Stupid comment to make, it clearly isn't. And besides, he is talking and explaining things as he plays, as a teacher myself I can appreciate how difficult that is, especially while explaining more complicated rhythms.

  • You should consider charging for 'online lessons'. You are awsome my brother....! (still I'd like ya alot more if you were fat......like me...OLOL)

  • At 3 minutes in....I got bored

  • thanks man

  • Can you give us a rough estimate of how much your drum set costs altogether?

    Thanks :)

  • @bdeland16 Dude, it's about the sound, not the price. Things should not be judged on how they cost.

  • @SaltyPenguinAHT I wasn't implying that a drumset with a higher cost sounds better, though pricey drumsets usually have better quality vs. cheap drumsets. I was simply curious as to how much his drumset costs. Have a wonderful day. Faggot.

  • Holy crap Ronnie James Dio is alive and he had a haircut!

  • He says,"To get all the pieces to fit," he's been listening to too much Schism.

  • You ought to make a recording of your drums and play that over your wifes radio in her car. Then you would know that your drums sound like crap!

Spend some time on learning how to tune a drum instead of trying to reach lofty goals.

  • @HEYBUDD - He took the time out of his day to create this video giving people a free lesson on learning polyrhythms as well as his own drumming style. Take your negative and immature criticism elsewhere - it's completely unwarranted. Tbartels007's videos are educational and a great contribution to the Youtube community.

  • @HEYBUDD o yah like U kno how to play drums. piss off man

  • Meshuggah song are fun exercises to figure out

  • This is brilliant. Thank you for posting this video. You have my respect.

  • I honestly can't believe people are posting hate comments, this is one of the best drummers I've seen. In technique and feeling of the songs he plays. All I can say is just really good work and the video was damn helpful. Thank you.

  • do you know any tips or tricks for learning triplets easy? thanks and i love tool and i love watching your videos

  • can you do a video of like foreplay/long time by boston, or some classic song by journey, boston, zepplin, etc? i know a lot of heavy stuff, but i want to learn a few classics too

    Thanks!!!!!!!

  • i'd love to come waking down the street, seeing u sitting in the passenger seet of a car listening to tool really loud, while playing invincible drums :D

  • @distubedrat yes!

  • just btw its LAH-durh-ah-luhhs

  • i like your Slipknot videos, so could u make more Slipknot? (btw ur the best) 9

  • can you give me a list of what your set consists of and roughly how much all of it cost?? thanks

  • dude i justed wanted to post a comment on vicarious but it said commenting was disabled. so what i was gonna was.. dude you completely mastered vicarious. i mean you played it perfect except where you mixed it up to put your own little spin on it. the best cover of vicarious of sen and one of my favorite covers on youtube.good job.

  • is your wifes car a hyundae? lol. I find that the factory stereos are awesome

  • really helped man was awsome teaching but one of your toms or toms mics sounds a little fucked the one you play before the floor tom anyways awsome drummer :) !!

  • yeah it is a little fuzzy

  • thanks alot man this really helped!

  • this helps alot

  • I think that has helped me more than any other video on here for figuring out rhythms. Thanks man.

  • man thats exactly how i taught/teach myself

but still, real nice explaination and not the least bit hard to understand

  • lateral-us

I always thought it meant us (beings) experiencing lateral time

at least that's how it is printed on the cover, the lateral part is above us

    great lesson.

  • Lat-er-AL -us

  • @forzaazzurri101 Wtf why you comment this video because you don't like it?

  • @Drake45100 wtf why you try speaking english when you don't know how?

  • the first song that i ever learned to play on the drums was schism. i think i bit off a little more than i could chew then, but i can play it all the way through now

  • I agree, when I learn a tool song I always try and figure out where the bass drum goes too. In lateralus, i'm still trying to learn the high hat addition after the first few bars into the first verse. This clears up alot of trouble I was having.

  • Good job! You really tell well how you figure out the songs!

I mostly use my feet to check out the Base Drum. I put my feet on my subwoofer and listen to the song. Than you can feel the base really loud =D.

If I cant hear it anymore, I use Transscribe to lower the speed without transforming the sound. You should check is out once. Its really helpfull! =D

  • very nicely done....even though danny uses a kettle drum for reflection (so i believe)

  • Thanks man.

I consider myself a good drummer, but I struggle with stuff like this.

I can't even play a simple rhythm on hi hat and go a lil faster/slower with bass without getting messed up.

That's why I envy Haake, Carey, and now you.

    Thanks man!

  • If you can't do what you just described, then you should envy just about every drummer in existence. I truly don't mean to offend you, but you may want a new hobby if you can't play a simple hi-hat rhythm and go faster/slower with bass. You should be able to do A LOT more than that.

  • Fair enough, but I only started playing drums (as in a set) a few years ago and I don't have my own.....

Played sax until my senior year then took up drums as a fun hobby. Again I dont have one...so I could only the schools, and now that I'm away at college I can not do that. Played like 5 times the last 3 years...seriously.

And yes, drumming IS my hobby. I play guitar mainly. And I can lay down nice rhythms, including jazz. But w/e this isnt about me.

    Danny Carey is amazing

  • That's harsh man.. Anyone can do it with enough dedication and practice.

  • BTW

    this vid helped alot

  • I bought these amazing Headphones for $5 and with them I can pick out exactly where the bass belongs......

They're called Bassics......they are cheap but work beautifully

  • wow ......i might get shit on for asking , but to you teach drum technique ? ( outside of you tube videos i mean)?

  • Man, I thought I was really good at playing tool songs like lateralus, and the pot and rosetta stoned....and then I saw this 40 year old guy on youtube names Tbartles straight put me to shame. lol

  • @Deciblaster LOLOLOL What a cool thing to admit. Yeah us 'old' guys are worth watching. (some times)

  • @Deciblaster well lateralus and rosetta stoned a freaking impossible songs, especially rosetta stoned.

  • Playing drums in your car while you're driving? Sounds kinda dangerous, but seems to be working for you.

  • so what exactly is a polyrhythm,?

  • Playing multiple rhythms at once. Example: playing 4/4 with your feet and playing 3/4 with your hands

  • two different tempos played at the same time on one instrument

  • Poly means more than one.. then it's up to you ^^

  • shit, that first comment, I meant 'incorrectly' not, "correctly"

  • and there is one thing that I agree and not agree with you DrumsOrly, I agree that no one could say that Danny is jealous of Tbartels, but what I don"y agree is that "he would puke" what was that? why the negative comment, Tbartels posted that video to show people what he could do not, people puking on his kit, don't bbe such a chicken shittin critic and just watch his ability to play as the people who made great music...dammit

  • If you don't like his stuff, don't watch the fucking videos. Some people are fucking dumb. You're a great drummer man, keep doing what you're doing and don't listen to the idiots who feel it necessary to fight with eachother about your own style. You clearly state that you change certain aspects of the songs you do because that's the way you feel comfortable playing. Anyways, I think you're a great drummer with a really good technique. And I'm sure there are more people who agree than not.

  • @AutumnsNightfall

YOU are fucking dumb. If you don't like other people's comments, don't fucking read them...

  • @idotman12 lol, good choice of words

  • @whatshendrix ahahahahahahaha...Seriously, jizz-lips? I said that a fuckin' year ago, why the fuck are you replying to it now? get a fuckin' life and stop searching for things to bitch about

  • @AutumnsNightfall

Well you're being defensive and you're whining so...

  • i have to side with billrodgers8 he seems to play everything perfect to me and watching these vids ive used some of his techniques to learn eulogy and other polyrthyms keep going with the drumming your good

  • DrumsORLY you're such a fanboy, stop posting in text what you think Daney Carey is doing and show everyone. The guy posted a DRUM COVER, people can play covers however they want, specify where this bloke said he's playing Tool songs note for note? You come on here like some autistic fuckhead pointing out insignificant shit about a band that everyone likes. There are a million Tool sticklers in the world, you're not special or devoted, you just want to look cool. 5 stars on all Tool covers mate

  • Dude, I KNOW what Danny Carey is doing. I've seen it, I've met him (and Carl Palmer), I shook his hand. That doesn't mean I can play it note for note either. That was never the discussion. You don't understand the explanations because you obviously don't play the drums. Unless you're a drummer or serious musician (and this goes for everyone) you're opinion means absolutely nothing to me. Read his explanation again about "iconic" and "crucial" parts of songs again. Stop posting now, so I can, too

  • And who is the fanboy, here? Why don't you just track down tbartels and blow him already... you've obviously got a man-crush on him.

  • DrumsORLY, why would you call me a fan boy? You're openly bragging about shaking someones hand and you think that gives you "serious musician" credentials? Nice one... I once shook the mayor's hand, that gives me the right to make the claim that I'm an expert on politics and law, does it? If you think he's teaching people wrong, fuck off and watch another video, or better yet, be a serious musician and develop your own drumming style and stop worshipping Daney Carey, fanboy cunt

  • Yeh, that's what everyone is doing, everyone is saying that tbartels is better than Danny Carey... I actually think you're a retard. State anywhere when anyone worshipped tbartels? You can't, and you're the typical skilless hack who needs to talk technical on YouTube because you feel it makes you a part of something. If you were actually a serious musician, you wouldn't be posting bullshit on YouTube to make yourself look like a drummer. When was the last time you saw Danny Carey post on here?

  • Hahahaha I thought you said you were sick of replying to ignorant, uninformed jerk offs? It's nice that you speak on behalf of Danny Carey now, letting us all know what makes him puke... No I don't play drums, I'm a 9 year old girl and I spend most of my time swimming in the toilet, does that make your opinion more valid than mine? Loser

  • And IF YOU READ I said I can't play all DC's stuff note for note. And I don't try. I'm not a professional drummer, it's a hobby. I have my own style I'm not the one putting up sad covers of all kinds of music. Real creativity there. AND TBARTELS CHANGES THE SONGS BECAUSE HE CAN'T PLAY THEM CORRECTLY. THEN ADDS A CONVOLUTED AND CONTRADICTORY DISCLAIMER ABOUT IT. I'm really tired of arguing with uninformed, ignorant, child-like jerk offs like you billrogers... I'm done... have a nice day...

  • Stop replying if you're sick of ignorant jerk offs then =) You're the sad jerk off who is busting a nut because you think someone played the wrong paradiddle so maybe you should think about how much of a dick you're making of yourself by challenging the whole internet to war. You're an easy target because you're a know-it-all

  • There have been a few intelligent and rational people who understand and agree with what I ave been talking. Like I said, the more you type, the more ignorant you become so go ahead and keep running your mouth.

  • Hahahaha you replied again! The more you type, the more I think you want to swim in the toilet with me

  • or are you? TBartels plays them correctly because not everyone has to. You can't expect perfection from someone who exerts his talent for many years, in a fuckin additional, like you he plays his fatherfuckin own way. What the fuck? Saying he's not doing it right? No one gets it right because Danny was the one who created the style of his own drumming, if I had the same talent, I would not impersonate him, so GET A FUUUCKIN GRIP AND DON'T GET SUCH A BIG DIIIICK!!

  • And don't forget that when he is playing the cover version of Rosetta Stoned, Danny Carey's playing drums are still in the backing track. You hear them loud and cear (along with how separated tbartels playing is from the song). This is true for all his covers...

  • in Rosetta Stoned Danny Carey plays what sounds like a paradiddle pattern on effects pads (the high-tom/tabla-ish sound) over the bass/snare pattern. How does he do this and still hit the snare and rack toms? He's fooling you. He doesn't play the paradiddle pattern with traditional RLRRLRLL sticking. He instead plays a triplet with one hand to feign the pattern so he can hit the snare or rack/floor tom to fill out the rhythm. TBartels doesn't even play the paradiddle pattern...

  • A polyrhythm consists of one or more ostinato, or repeating phrase, in a particular time signature, with something else played over it in a different time signature. Say, A 5/4 bass drum/hi-hat combo, with a straight 4/4 hand rhythm over it.

  • And for the record he plays all three patterns in his "Learning Polyrythms"incorrectly. Give a listen to the songs...

  • in learning polyrhythms they are wrong, but in the videos where he actually plays the whole song, they sound pretty right to me

  • Have you seen his other vids man?!!? How can you call him the "biggest hack on the net"? I didn't notice that he missed anything in Eulogy (I am not a drummer, so maybe I can tell) but all of his videos make it seem like he knows what he's doing. Don't hate on people on the internet; it's stupid. [Oh, and also read the second paragraph of all of his videos' descriptions]

  • "I keep my playing within the framework of the song and will play a part exact if that part is either iconic (like Phil Collins In The Air Tonight) or critical to the success of the song. "

Did you read it? "Eulogy" is an iconic song. The tom pattern is critical to the song. In many parts of all the songs he posts he's not playing anything close to what Danny Carey is playing. Check out other people's vids listen to the songs again anything please so youll see I'm not making this stuff up

  • Anyone can argue whether or not songs are iconic, but thats besides the point. Are you talking about the part in Eulogy at about 1:30 where the toms come in? That part is not really critical to the song. He was already playing the weird sound (how is that made anyway? the whole intro is weird) on his electronic pads, so I can see why he would stick to that instead of switching to the tom part. If that's what you're talking about.

  • Danny Carey is an icon and all of his songs are legendary. That tom pattern is there for most of the song. The "chick" sound is made by an effects pad. In "Reflections" there is a wood block part that Danny Carey plays along with the tom pattern (which isn't a polyrythm btw, count it) Tbartels doesn't even play the tom rhythm correctly, and he neglects the wood block part all together. I've seen Tool a dozen times and even met Danny Carey at a drum clinic. I know what's going on back there.

  • First of all, I'm not going to argue the "Danny Carey is an icon," because that is completely true.

But, I'll give in first. Tbartels might be playing all of these songs incorrectly (again, I can't really tell), and he might leave out parts, etc. but I still think that he does a damn good job of conveying the song structures of all of the songs he covers. I also just found out that I've have been arguing with a 48 year old man.(really?)

  • I put in Danny Carey's birthday. I'm not that old. I'm in my 20's.

The thing is that you can't put your self out here explaining and teaching polyrhythms and Tool songs when you don't even know what you're playing. And I'm not going to tell you I know ALL the technical details, but, I'm not posting videos claiming to either. You can't explain how to properly play a polyrhythm without knowing the time signatures (and it is signatures, hence the poly) that are being played.

  • I'm glad that I had an intelligent argument on youtube. By the way you discuss drums it seems as though you are a drummer yourself. Can you post some vids of the right way to play the songs. I would really appreciate the clarification. I really can't understand it from the text. Either that or direct me to someone's video who plays it correctly.

    thanks

  • I do play. Have been for about 10 years. Tool is my fav band and Danny Carey my fav drummer... I actually recorded some audio tonight of me playing the beginning of "Reflection" as well as a lot of jamming. I don't have a wood block or effects pads. So I played the rhythm and used the china as the block sound. No vids yet but I have a friend who said he will take some vids of me playing.

You should check out Matter311 here on youtube. He does some Tool stuff and does it well.

  • Oh, and in Eulogy Danny Carey is playing the "chick" sound on the effects pad while playing the tom pattern at the same time. That's the point.

  • If you check out Eulogy live in Montreal you can see very clearly what Danny Carey plays in the song. Choose the version for which the description is "not a good quality" because the sound is more dead on to the playing than other postings of the same vid.

  • Oh, now i totally see what you're saying! It seems that with tbartel's level of skill, he could be playing both parts, and he should.

  • honey can i borrow ur car to figure out how to drum this song? lol

  • this video astounds me!! Your playing is amazing and so fluid!

  • u need a head set mike. i'll chip in if you keep posting lessons!!!

  • you make it look so easy

  • It is but you can't rely on just waching and expecting to get it... just saying... you have to drum with the spirit i can tell by the way this guy drums thats what he does

  • you are a blessing to the musical world. thank you.

  • excellent advice man..and really what all drummers should do to try and make learning a song as easy as possible, a lot of people just have too much on their plate at once and get discouraged, breakdown all sounds and sections and tempo, great advice.

  • Great instructions. I don't play drums but I do tap my hands to the beats or whatever, and some of my friends are amazed how closely I can get to sounding correct haah. Anyway, one suggestion I would have is to turn the vox up just a smidgen. It's kind of hard to hear you speak. Other than that, great video! Keep goin'!

  • do you play in a band, or do you just play for fun at home?

  • I cant wait to start playing. If i may could you play "Broken Hands" from Lamb of God??

  • thanks for the tutorial.there is a program that slows down cd tracks that you can get from music store im not sure what it is called.but im sure it would help for these crazy beats

  • Are those triplets in the lateralus pattern or are they 16ths? I have the feel of the song down but I cant tell.

I cant seem to figure out the sticking either. Can anyone post it? Like LLFR or however you prefer

  • im gettin my first drum kit in a couple of weeks or so. its only a 5 peice but ill probably expand it in the future. ive watched all your vids and i love em. plz post more learning vids. i think your videos will rlly help me in the future thx =]

  • oh dude...i better call u sir...i have loads of respect for you sir...honestly all your videos are so good, in fact apart frm ur trmndus drumming...efforts uve done to make the videos so good n watchable...like that sony cam...microphone n thn diffrnt angle views...thnk u sir...n yeah i wd to listen to such songs diffrntly n pick up these polyrythms...this tutorial is very hlpful

  • In Reflection, I'm pretty sure Danny uses one of those electronic pads with a really deep and streched (in time) base sound to it on the first "stoke" where you use the base kick drum.

Don't know if that made any sense; I'm not so solid in English "drum language".

Anyhow it's inspiring to see you play and you are a really good teacher. I'm really thinking about taking up drumming again now.

  • I found that you have made a video where you actually play the entire song (Reflection) now and I see that you use one of those electronic pads :)

  • Yeah I agree. Danny shows you what it sounds like in the track before. Then you hear the stick falling on the snare. Thats the first down stroke. Good hear. If you listen closer you can hear a ticking noise that follows the tom tom pattern.

  • great advice, great teacher, good drummer. I've seen your tool covers and they are great. You incorporate your own style to another great style. The only flaw I've noticed in your drumming is that your not getting the timing 100% on your songs. Some sections on your other songs and even this tutorial you aren't totally precise.

  • i agrea with you you are being completely honest and that is what makes ppl better, if someone makes a noticable mistake you tell them and if you don't then they will keep doing that mistake over and over, except him being off timing, that is something i had to really listen for.

  • Comment removed

  • please tell me how you feel about my other comment id like to know thank you..

  • I'm sorry, what is your other comment?

  • dude you're mad good...i cant believe your videos don't have more views bro

  • Do you teach? If you don't you should... You are FANTASTIC!... My band is covering The Pot... I listen to it all day with sony sound proof (whatever they are called) head phones. I put it on repeat and tap my fingers and feet to try to imitate what he is playing... I think it is amazing how well you understand each aspect of the rhythms... I will definitely continue to watch your videos... post more "how to" vids PLZ! :D Keep drumming bro!

  • good lord, i would go to such extreme lengths to have you as my drum teacher, god. You are such a good teacher, i love it. Thanks so much for uploading these 2 videos. oh and i am 15 been playing drum set for about 2 years.

  • you are fucking amazing!

i am a young drummer. i started about half a year ago. your covers are really good!

you are an awesome musician and you're like my idol!!!!

i have showed your stuff to some many people!!!!! i'm surprised you aren't like in a famous band or something.

    KEEP ROCKINGG!!!! xDDDD

  • Thanks a lot. I know that a lot of young drummers watch these vids and I'm glad I can help in whatever way I can. Keep practicing and have fun doing it!!!! Thanks again!! TB

  • @tbartels007

Absolutely man. I love your videos. I've been drumming since I was 10 (11 years now) but being away at school I havnt in 4 years. Shame since I'm so rusty and my development's been stifled. Hopefully I'll have a set soon, and you're my inspiration to learn technical drumming! Thanks for the tips on polyrhythmic drumming

  • AMAZING im playing so much better ty bro

  • Excellent. I'm glad to hear these videos help a little bit.

  • indubitably

  • really gud man....especially the maiden covers and the polyrythmic advice helpd...thanks man....

  • OMFG DUDE, i do the same thing. i cant reads tabs really, so i listen closley to the song and just tap my feet and fingers just to get a sense of movement. its funny cuz i do it while i drive too lol. thanks for the extra help man. and your covers are just amazing.

  • cheers for your help matey

  • This is amazing. You're a brilliant musician and deserve to be famous by now (I saw you've been drumming since the 80's).

    Ku.. motherfucking .... dos.

  • dude you rock but you need some paiste cymbals

  • Thanks you helped me a lot.

  • wow man your amazing, thank you so much. you're seriously like an inspiration.

  • Thank you very much for this, it helped greatly in a few different ways!

  • This guy - tbartels007 - is my stepbrother and I am damn proud of him.

    Oliver

  • THANKS! You've helped me tremendously!

  • My respect for Danny Carey has just shot through the roof.

  • you show what kind of f#cking genius Danny Carey is.

  • this guy earned everyones respect.

  • why have you disabled comments for your older videos? I was gonna remark on how awesome your playing is

  • I picked "Reflecion" out a bit different than you, but it sounds more like the way Danny plays it

  • thankyou so much for sharing this.

  • do you have any special foot positioning you have when you play the double bass pedal? i ask because im trying to teach myself how to play drums. but thanks for posting vids like this. YOUR AMAZING.
