The drama in his paintings is misterious, controversial, and crude.. he rapresents catholic figures as normal people, he understands that beauty is also to be found in common gestures , in tragic moments and reality but what makes it more extraordinary is the use of light and shadow(chiaroscuro) truly a genius

After the opression from religion for many centuries, art in the Renaissance instead of blooming again became a propagandistic tool for the dogma. Its a pity art needs verification from religion.

Not so. Wasn't only religious propaganda.

The barroque man's feelings about religion is far more deep than our relationship with the sacred.

At this time religion still the most important aspect of the commom life. There was a rational progress in the Renaissance that valued knowledge, technology and individualism that are the foundations of modernity.

However the sacred remains the core of this society.

I agree with you, Painting, music and poetry especially after 15th century allowed the common man to express feelings of great magnitude or clense inner demons. But art was locked in a religious cage, because everything had to seem fit for the tenet (this is why statuary was almost obliterated up to today).

My Mum is from Malta. where he was imprisoned. His work had a dark " cinematic " quality.Real depth . Someone did a novel on him. I read it 2003. What was it called? I don't think it was called " M", I think it was another book. Thanks.
