  • it doesn't work. The problem is it is a windows 95 game which worked until Windows XP, and it doesn't work on 64-bit windows 7.

  • @albeebley probably the program is not ment to play from dosbox, hope this helped (:

  • I got an error saying "This program cannot be run in DOS mode"

  • @albeebley That means it's a Windows program. Try running it in windows, with Win95 compatibility, instead,

  • YES now i can play sim ant! *dances* ^.^

  • it didn't work, at first,, before i re :alize that my dosbox was version 0.63. so just make sure, your dosbox is v0.72 or later XD

thnks for the video, by the way ;)

  • So .. "mount c c:\xcom\" followed by "c:" worked for me but when i try "cd XCOM" it shows error: "Unable to change to: xcom"

xcom is an .exe file inside the folder xcom wich is located in c:

  • @djoowtjuh Ok it worked now (i didnt have to type cd) and it installed the game in the folder.. but when its' done installing and i run the xcom.exe it wants to install AGAIN... No idea how to fix this

  • @djoowtjuh

Same thing happaning to me lol

  • @Zgamer767 Well i downloaded another version of xcom,Ufo Enemy Unknown (same thing, other name) and when i unpacked the .zip it looked totally different I then dragged the .exe on dosbox and it worked right away.

  • thank you bro ..

    it's work !

  • im trying to play lost vikings 2 and ive mounted my drive which is (H:) where do i go from there?and the game is labled lv2 lol. Help lol.

  • dont really get the hole click and drag thing.. just downloaded Ignition to run with Dos box.. but when i drag the IGN_WIN.exe file to the DosBox0.74 on my desktop it just says. ''

C:\>IGN_WIN.EXE ''this program can not be run in DOS mode.''

    help please

  • @Blackout587 DOSBox can only run dos games, and when something says "this program can not be run in DOS mode," that means it's not for DOS. Since it's called "IGN_WIN" I'm assuming it's for windows due to the "WIN" part.

  • thanks sooo much dude! it works!

  • im trying to install realms of the haunting, its an emulator same basic stuff all program files are present but gosh am I terrible at using DOS. Anything I should be doing differently with DOS Rom files?

  • @Kirbster10 Tell me the name of the file your trying to run (with the extension.) If your trying to run a game, it's launch file must end with .bat, .com or .exe. This is try for all versions of MS-DOS, DOSBox, DR-DOS, FeeDOS and every type of DOS I can think of so it's not just a DOSBox thing.

  • Thanks man ;-)

  • its slow

  • oops nvm thx

  • i have it working without dosbox but i cant get it full screen wat should i do

  • I'm gonna check this out to night..

I hope I can play Star Wars - Dark Forces this way

  • @archy9752 thank you I'll keep that in mind :)

  • @archy9752 How bout "Please run DAGGER.EXE to run Daggerfall"?

  • @sbtrackrunner Go to where Daggerfall's directory is (by default, it's named DAGGER) and type in "DAGGER" without quotes. If this doesn't help you, there's a highly detailed tutorial on how to get Daggerfall to work on modern operating systems.

I'll send that highly detailed tutorial to you in a Personal Message because I can't post links in the comments. If you still have questions, just ask.

  • THANK YOU!!! I have tried to get my dosbox working and finally I had it!!!!

  • lol i didnt get it to work because i drag and dropped the game thing in the program when i had it open, all i had to do was not open the program and drop the thing on dosbox icon

  • for full screen press ALT-ENTER.

  • When im playing the games.....they are in a small box...how can i make it fullscreen?

  • @necros234necros345 ALT+ENTER

  • you my friend are an absolute genius!

  • Will you help me mount the game into a file, like at 1:30?

  • @JackKlompus13 Where is your DOSBox installation located and where is your game located and what file launches the game? Answer that and then I can help you.

  • how do you write / in dosbox when i do that it goes down to the next line and i dont want that

  • @theDANISHdynamite \ also works but if you can't type that either, hold the ALT key and on your keypad, pres 9 and then 2. It will make a "\" appear.

  • thank you heaps!

  • @profduke49 I'm runnign this on Windows 7 64-bit. Is it not compatible or something? Whenever I say the mount my folder with my games in it, it says that the directory doesn't exist. What do I do?

  • @RuoshanJo Hold the ALT key and then press 58 on your KEYPAD.

  • WOW! Thank you SO much!! I downloaded an ancient game and DOSbox, but I had no idea how to integrate the two. You're a lifesaver... for me playing an old childhood game (Dr. Quandary) :)

  • Putt Putt doesnt work :(

  • I have a few questions, does dosbox work on windows 7 ?

And I downloaded Putt Putt (LOL get over it) and fatty bear, and I am not sure how you open them...

  • @profduke49 i have got a problem

i don't know what is the file who i should open

i open system.exe and it stuck and my question is that

    what file should i open?

i open the only .exe file and it stuck

what did i should do now?

  • someone help! it says directory doesn't exist when i try to mount something!!!!

  • @smileyCoveredinBlood try:

    mount c

    mount c C:\

  • @AlexTorres1988 (i have the same problem too so can you help me?) I tried mount c, but that just says:

    Usage MOUNT Drve-Letter Local-Directory

    For Example: MOUNT c ~/dosprogs

this makes the directory ~/dosprogs ac as the C: drive inside DOSbox

    The directory has to exist.

  • @ToastMaster623 You can do it from to different ways: 1-Read the discription (you will feel stupid XD) 2-Open DosBox and then type: mount c mount c:\ Then it shoud say something about "you shouldn't create this shit in here cause its dangerous" (Jk) then type: c:\ and then select the game you want to run.

  • @AlexTorres1988 But it says that drive C doesn't exist (whatever that means!)

  • @ToastMaster623 What hard drives do you have?

  • @AlexTorres1988 I honestly don't know what that means... is it Macintosh HD? I have know idea...

  • @ToastMaster623 -_-' Like C:\ ,D:\ go to my computer and see if any of those letters exist

  • @AlexTorres1988 i'm sorry. I'm a fool. But no, these letters don't exist.

  • @ToastMaster623 Ok.Just drag the *.exe game to the DosBox icon.Done!

*.exe= The *means the game name of any game with ending with .exe.

  • @AlexTorres1988 but my game is apparently a folder.

  • @ToastMaster623 Open the folder!Lol

  • @AlexTorres1988 Okay I found the file. But I don't get what I drag it to. When I drag it to the Dosbox application, nothing happens. When I drag it to this thing called Dosbox-0.74_Universal.dmg, nothing happens.

  • @ToastMaster623 Ok.Don't you have a DosBox icon in your desktop? If you have it, just simply drag the file and drop it over the DosBox icon (if you have it)

  • @AlexTorres1988 I don't have it in my desktop, but I tried dragging the file to the dosbox icon in finder. it didn't work.

  • its impossible to mount something for me....trying it all the time....just trinking beer and trying to mount c: as a local directory...im going crazy right now...can sb. help me? the problem is that i cant choose a sub dir because when i type in "mount c c:\" it changes automatically to the line down under...uuurgghh

  • i cant mount drives because when i type "mount c c:\", the typing stripe jumps down one line so what can i do about it? i cant mount any thing

  • my games are running but they are wayy too slow... please can you tell me why?

  • camstasia yes great tut by the way

  • Useful tutorial. Very helpful. Question, though. Im trying to play duke nukem 1, downloaded it online as abandonware. I try to open it w/ dosbox and it comes up with blue lines on the top of the screen and eventually a flickering white box in the middle. Help?

  • Thanks, very easy :)

  • I have a MacBook Pro. How do I increase the cycle speed? ctrl + f12 doesn't do a thing.

  • @celcius119 in the DOSBox command prompt, type in:

    cycles=max

  • duke nukem 3d here i come. i found my mom's copy from the 90's lol

  • Nice tutorial, but are you aware that for many/most games, you can simply drag/drop the game .exe file onto the DOSBox desktop icon? I do it & it works for like 90+% of DOS games. Quick/easy. BTW, you sound a little young (no offense) to be interested in old DOS games. Are you into/do you enjoy any other classic/vintage, retro games? Emulators (or real consoles) for Atari, Intellivision, MAME (arcade game emulator), Nintendo/SNES/N64, etc? If so, every play any online using Kaillera Client?

  • so im trying to install heroes of might and magic 2 using this. When i typ dir it says the file is: HEROES2 NRG

but when i type HEROES2 or Heroes2 or heroes2 it says illegal command

    Halp?

  • thx

  • GREAT!

  • why the fuck when i to type c:\ its find here but in dosbox it types it as c;] ????

  • @barryg200 i think you have to use the left hand shift key or it doesnt work

  • thank you for the clearest dosbox Tutorial on the tube

  • why don't you show the easiest way? Just catc&drag the run file(the same name file of the program) over the dosbox icon.... -it not more difficult, than drag an icon to another place...

    :M:

  • THANK YOU! You are the first person who actually explained what to do after downloading DosBOX in simplest terms. Every other video I saw just kept saying I had to mount the drive without even showing how to do it. You get a like just for explaining this without complications.

  • i did all this and tried the tutorial from the site but it always says :

This Program cannot be run in DOS mode

  • When I try to run X-com: APOC it does nothing.

  • Thanks for this! I could get the game WOLF to run by typing it into the config file for the DOSBox, but the game LION wouldn't work. This launched it for me without any problems, however! :)

  • @novicegaming101 are you using forward slash or backslash? Try to use a shorter name for your dir like, C:\dos\

I think I had this same problem and when I shortened my game folder name it worked

  • Yes! You got my Star Trek game to work! I just love you right now.

  • Comment removed

  • i got to the part where i had C mounted, but when i tried to open the game, which was the dos lionking game, i tried different stuf, but i got things like 'directory name is longer than 8 characters and/or contains spaces. try using cd DOS~1, but when i tried things like cd lionki~1 it just said it was unable to change to it. can anyone help with this part?

  • I have a question when I type the name of the app (AKA game) it says to update then it says "This is not your *insert game here* directory. This utility will only work from your *insert game here* directory." Any Ideas?

  • When I got to the cd part, it said unable to change. :O

  • @pumpituppartyzone same here...sum1 please help us...

  • Very helpful video and all, but when i change directory its still on z:> even though it said Drive c is mounted as local directory \OLDGAMES\ ?

  • @azjhoolies

yes, after it has said that it means that dosbox knows that the drive exists, BUT it hasnt yet selected it so you have to select it by simily typing C:\, or whatever your drive letter is. hope that helps.

  • hi need some help i installed the game but after launching it, it keeps asking for the cd, what do i do wrong?

  • Okay screw this im just gonna go play postal 2

  • hi I got right to the end have C:\Strong``1 but i cant manage to play stronghold? and there is no MS dos Batch file

    Thanks

  • Help I using windows vista i wanna play terminator 2 the arcade game BUT there no batch file only got 2 application >>t2 and lzh

  • @born2war1 there is a possibility that the file needed is and exe, try both names.

  • Hey

I get Rayman running with my DOSBox, but it's running too fast. How can I slow it down? Limiting/skipping frames and changing CPU speed with ctrl+F11/F10 either puts it in super slowmo speed or the standard "holyshit-this-is-to-fast" speed.

    Anybody know what to do?

  • Also just wondering.

Can DOSBox sometimes corrupt computer files?

  • @MrFox1231 It only messes up your computer if you type a command harmful to your computer witch could also happen to you in cmd.exe so it's no more dangerous than the command prompt that come with windows NT, id actually say much less dangerous.

  • thx for the vid. allready knew how to mount and start a game but i did not know how to reload the game until now.

  • dude thankyou for this.

  • dosbox is the worst emulator i ever used. why isnt there something simpler for opening games like other emulators, why doesnt it know that SHIFTLOCK exists, why isnt there a AZERTY keyboard option and why the fuck does it say that C: (the hard drive) and D: (the cd drive) dont exist!

  • @darockstardude Because this software is not made fool proof. You can make it qwerty by key mapping. And there's an easy way to start a game by tweaking config file. You're the one who is stupid.

  • @boringbloke2000 why dont you go and stick a floppy disk up your ass or something?

  • thank you for making the video

  • i cant type a : in dosbox. so that means im 100% fucked

  • @darockstardude Did you try using the Left Shift key?

  • Hey thanks very much for this. Because DOS Box can be a real nightmare if you don't know what you're doing. But you made it very clear. Now I can play the old classics. I would buy you a drink. If I knew who you were.

  • Thanks a lot! I had totally forgot how to do this.

  • Lmao..he tries to help a bunch of dickheads and how do they react? Like dickheads of course.

  • dose not work i try the old settlers 2 demo

  • this Program requires Microsoft Windows.. wtf do you think i'm running it on ahhhh help

  • @thehugh100 That means the game is for windows (probably windows 9x) and can't run on DOS. DOSBox is a DOS emulator, not a windows 9x (or NT) emulator.

  • @archy9752 oh i see thanks, another flaw in backwards compatability

  • thanks

  • Nice job, very clear and well explained but I have a point about where you began your mini-lesson. There appears to be some preliminary configurations. What's ultrasnd or ultradir? I saw you chose to not show the DOSBox control panel or use a front ender. Otherwise, fine explanation of the mounting process.

  • ok is it possible to use .rar files for dosbox? because i really want to play fallout 1

and i found a .rar for it online and it says to use dosbox. all that you download is a folder that says fallout_free and in it it has a file called fallout.rar. so i did the whole thing and when i enter thename of the file and press enter it says illegal command? help!!?

  • @tm7111

.rar suffix indicates an archived, packaged, or compressed program that needs decompressed and loaded into the system file structure. Use a decrompression program to open the .rar to get the .exe, .bat, and other operational files needed to run your program or game. Use WinRAR, although I vouch for PeaZip, and once that is done then throw it into the, I mean, configure the DOSBox around it.

  • @tm7111 Just use winrar (which is free if you ignore the license) and extract the file.

  • if u guys need anny help pm me il tell u how

  • heres a shortcut : take the main folder that contains every file for the game and drag it on the dosbox window and it will automatically mount

  • thanks for the vid description tip I was almost afraid I had ot learn complex DOS commando,s!

  • hater gon hate, but thanks so much for getting me off the ground with DOSBox. Crystal Caves, here I come :D
