I used to hate The Fall in my teens, but as I have got older and wiser they have become my favourite band. I hardly listen to anything else these days. They seem to have rendered all other music totally redundant.
Great to see such appreciation for MES here, this track is one of my favourites too(not that i can claim to have heard half of the fall's prolific output!) but this to me is sublime genius - witty, touching, beautiful! hahaha
I don't know what this is about and it doesn't matter because it is jaw droppingly original and unique and if they had never existed Earth would have been a duller more pointless place.
Spoke to John Leckie at the XTC convention in 1989 and I asked him what was going on when he recorded this track. He said Mark had recorded the track on a shitty tape recorder and put it in his rucksack. Every time he put it down it went on record and recorded over the track. He said he was unable to recreate a better version in the studio so they just overdubbed the tape recording.
I believe it is Youtube convention to respond to anyone disliking a video in some sort of way relevant to the content of the video. Here goes:
"Ha Ha LOL, Looks like one person objects to what Mark is doing to the paintwork. Maybe he owns the object which has been painted or is a painter-decorator who takes inordinate pride in his work and often revisits things he has painted to see if they're being looked after.ROFL!
BTW -I inherited the Fall from my brother. Jealous of those who saw this live.
@colmoregan I wouldn't worry too much about not having seen The Fall live. They were an utter drag live. The recordings are what this band was all about. What you've missed live was more or less shit.
@colmoregan I thought I was the only man awake in this world — and you reply to my post within minutes?!
Well, I guess it's a new day where you are (6:00 am here). I'm sleepless just now and was listening to lots of The Fall, and now this (you might like it; quite different; c. 1980):
"She's Leaving" by Orchestral Manoevres in the Dark
(Tried to post the link, but YouTube didn't like that.)
Another favourite band from my early teens, but then again, I'm a hopless imsomniac... G'night to you.
This really could be the best Fall track ever, and that is saying something. 'Leave the Capitol', 'Eat Yourself Fitter' and 'R.O.D.' are some other wonderfully strange ones too
sometimes they say, hey mark!

This sounds like a weird version of Pixies, even before of Pixies existence.

The excerpt at 0:42 is recorded from a 1970's Open University programme, presumably about astronomy. Just thought you ought to know...
