  • OMG LUCKY I WANT TO BUY ONE BUT THEY COST TO MUCH

  • Great Job! But, wouldn't it have been better to spend another 3 or 4 thousand and save 40,000 of labor?

  • Absolutely fantastic!

Well done on such excellent workmanship.

  • Great Job on the restoration. All of that rust would have made me run the other direction! I hope you and your bus have a happy life together!

  • holy shit.....i am speechless great gob on fixing it up

ps... i think you should work on your cooking skills!!!

  • use some seam sealer on the seams, some states in the US dont use salt on the roads, but those that do,were stuck with the same. You did a really nice job.VW's are very popular in US.

  • dude hella nice job on the bus i just got a 71 camper bus that iam restoring myself but great job on good video man 10 stars.

  • Cheers! Good luck with your project, 71 is a nice year (small rear lights). Just double your estimated completion time ;)

  • I'm glad I am not the only one who has a massive fear of rust! Great Job!

  • Thanks fella!

  • Amazing video how much do you reckon all the repairs cost you?

  • cheers fella, because my girlfriend's dad did the welding & sprayjob for me it cost me only about £2500 for everything. lots of little things cost a lot of money!

  • were a dedicated committed bunch us volks drivers ay, i like you and many before us have walked the path you show here. (well done) all because of that spark, its just a little something when you look in to its headlights that shouts save me. and ya do. . .

  • Thanks for the comment! :)

  • for the love of waxoil!!!

  • nice bay. you done a great job with it. what the song called *5

  • Thanks for the comment bobcooli! The song is I'm Still Alive by Meatloaf.

  • forgot to say i have a 1974 vwbeetle

  • sweet, is it a superbeetle or a stock beetle? i used to own a 1973 1303S

  • its a 1974 1200 vw beetle

  • Nice build Bertie, I'm glad it's not just me that can uncover a can of worms! Excellent job considering a lack of garage, hope the good old British weather was kind to you :)

  • cheers dude! the year we started the van was when we had all that rain and floods in sheffield which stopped work for a month! i remember watching your video some time back. how is your bus looking now?

  • Inspirational!

  • Exelent vid m8, the end result of your van is bl**dy brilliant!!!!!!!!!!

  • Nice job with the restore. Looks great!

  • yea...new metal..good job

  • I spent the day grinding, cutting, and cussing my '68 bus today. I was ready to quit and haul it off. Then, I saw this video. Epic win my friend, and I am once again inspired. Keep the Volks alive.

    Thank you.

  • Just keep at it! It starts to take over your life, every nice weekend, but it'll be worth it ;)

It was made worthwhile for me cruising through Newquay last year :)

  • I wouldn't worry too much about a day, try a couple of years hacking then review! With most buses youv'e gotta be cruel to be kind - worth it in the end Dude!

    Mubbsi.

  • Great work - a real inspiration, anda reality check re the £1600 van i am thinking of buying !

  • If you can see the rust, it's not always a bad thing. Better than being hidden behind primer and filler!

  • Oh my sweet feathery saviour. What a job!!

  • parabens, deu muito trabalho mas ficou 5 estrelas

  • obrigado :)

  • great job. that video make me want to restore a vw camper lol :) but not old enough just yet

  • lol, there's plenty out there that need restoring so you will be spoilt for choice :) the hardest thing is convincing your parents, i started by buying a beetle when i was 16 and doing jobs like replacing wings & tidying up where it was rusty until i passed my test

  • Great project and what a fantastic job you all made! Nice colour too! I'm at the stage where my 73 is now pretty much as I would like it (after spending over £3000 at my local body shop over the last 3 or so years). I can't complain though - it's been drivable so I could use it in between visits to the body shop. Hope you have loads of fun in yours!

  • That's cool how you were able to use yours as you've been restoring it. You'll have to send some pics my way... I think my email addy is in my info

    Cheers for the comment

  • nice work, keep it up!

  • Awesome work, keep em campers rolling!! :)

  • Completely awesome. Well done you! I bought a 1976 bay on the dreaded ebay for £950. I dropped it off at a garage to get a cheap MOT etc. It's been there 3 years now. I've had 2 kids in the time it's been there! It's finally ready to come out but I'm 20k lighter.... (Ouch!!). If you're going to any of the shows I'll look you out. Great job, you've put my lazy arse to shame. Jibber.

  • Thanks fella! I've just got back from Cornwall Jamboree and VW Action and I'm going to Vanfest in a couple of weeks so if you spot me come over and have a beer!

I would have spent the same as you if my girlfriend's Dad hadn't done the welding and spraying.

If you have any pics of yours it would be cool to see them.

    Carl

  • looking good there, i'm in the same boat. Have a 72 (which i believe yours is?) which needs much of the same work, just on the chassis at the min and keep looking for things to keep me inspired which is certainly how i feel right now. but raining hah, good ol british weather ay.. any way nice job. Re

    Nick

  • Yeah mine's a 72 too, a crossover bay. I have some rear bumper brackets somewhere if you need them, they are really hard to come by as they are 6-month only production.

When we were doing mine it was when we had all the floods up here which stopped work for at least a month. Hopefully it picks up for you, and glad it has inspired you :)

  • could well be very helpfull yeah, i'll check my boxes and look over the state of mine, i know the rear bumper it's self was shot, also hard to find! van is stripped to bare shell at the min (apart from paint, have also been keeping photograph diary so will put a video response of how it's going. Just like to say to whoever is thinking of doing this that it's no walk in the park!! it takes money, commitment and 00's of hours, this really is an achievment. u manage to find a dash clock yet ?

  • GREAT Job! I just got a 70 Camper and I was very, very lucky. the frame is in very good condition. Most of the time when you buy any VW here in New Jersey they look like your bus looked. Its a lot of work but it makes you feal good that you brought it back to life. Good luck with it, well done.

    Jack

  • Nice one, yours is an even earlier one then and will have the small rear lights. At least if it's solid you can personalise the paintjob or interior if you wish.

Good look with yours! Yeah I'd like to see the look on the previous owner's face if he saw it now!

  • Pretty familiar stuff.

Mine was like this but it's just about ready to be painted at last.

My advice would be to buy an already restored one.

Mine looked not-too-bad but it was absolutely rotten.

    Five hundred pounds it cost.

Add three grand to that and it will be up to scratch which is pretty good I suppose.

    It had better be fun.

  • The only thing when you buy an already restored one is that you don't know how good it is under the paint. Filler and make a camper look great, until it starts rusting underneath or cracking.

It'll be worth it when it's done just stick at it, good luck with yours!

  • nice work man, your van looks really cool, my camper is coming along, check my vid, seems like it takes forever dont it. And of course, the meat rocks!

  • GR8 job on your bus! And for the record, BAY WINDOWS RULE!!!

  • thank you! have you got a vw? your user name looks like it could be the registration of a beetle or a camper :P

  • jolly good job. thats one of the best restorations ive seen.

  • I am jolly well pleased that you like the restoration :P

  • Excellent video. Check out my camper video, I think shel might need some welding this summer though. Hope it doesn't turn into an epic project.

  • well you've forced me to post my first ever you tube comment...top job on the video and the van! just contemplating taking on a project - think i might go for it now, but only if i can have some 'meaty' in the background!

  • lol cheers! yeah go for it, my advise will be to double the time you think it will take to finish it though and that'll be about right ;) but it will all be worth it!

haha, i'm glad you appretiate the meat!

  • Most excellent video mate, good work on the bay.

  • thanks fella

  • Carl.. My Brother

    Is A Geek

    But i Love His Car,

I Want A Picture of Me Sitting On Top Of It One Day Haha:)

    Good video

    xxxx

  • i'll let you poke your head through the sunroof whilst i give you a big hug and have it printed on canvas for christmas :P

    thank you sissy!

  • Fantastic job! You got to be British to spend that kind of money on restoring a VW like that, and a 70ies Bay even :) LOVE IT! But why change to early Bay turn signals? And why leave the dents over and left of the right rear wheel? Just curious :)

  • thanks dude! it only cost me the price of the panels and paint as my girlfriend's dad did the welding and the spraying for me and me & my girlfriend both helped.

i know what you mean though, you're probably from somewhere hot where bays don't rot like this! the turn signals were oringinally down at the bottom because it's a 1972 cross-over camper

if you mean the dents on the rear quarter panels that's where the bumper bolts to the rear corner...
