Though shocking now, this is really no different than what we have today. What one has to keep in mind is the target audience. The Flintstones' target audience was not intended to be exclusively children. At it's launch, it was to be a prime time sitcom that would appeal to the entire family. This commercial reflects the adult portion of their demographics.
@Tomatobunni Yep, it'd be like having cigarette ads during Family Guy today. While maybe not a good idea anyway, it's not little kids that are the main viewing demographic.
@METALMAN4Wii people is just as stupid now, the think that the usa president is a secret kenian Muslim, dismiss evolution and believe that the "rapture" will happen in their lifetime.
And now they do cereal commercials. If they figured they wanted to do something more healthy, they waited to long. With all the junk they put in cereal today, those old cigarettes are probably better for you. LOL!
I personally think it would be cool if they still did the Olympics sponsering cigarette adds today. They could have a Marlboro add where a ski jumper does a backflip in mid air, takes a couple puffs of his cigarette and then sticks a perfect landing. They'd have to get a nice close up of his face though while he's smoking and then pan out.
Scumbag tobacco-pushers (RJ Reynolds) playing fools (Hanna-Barbera, ABC: "'The Flintstones' is aimed at adults!") for chumps: "Oh, these commercials are for ADULTS, the show's target audience, not for glamorizing smoking to entice children to start, oh no!"
Brooklyn Bridge for sale, cheap...anyone?
Paddy Chayefsky or George Orwell couldn't have conceived anything better!
(Sorry if calling tobacco-pushers "scumbags" is an insult...to scumbags!)
For anybody freaking out over this, the Flintstones were originally a Prime Time series. It was the first show I ever saw in color, one of the few broadcast in color in the early days around 66.
One of my childhood favorites, but I need to say it this commercial for me is really weird, I used to love The Flintstones in my childhood but seeing them smoking it really creeps me out.
@twilightwindwaker TV programming was generally in black and white until about 1966. This epispode must have been prior to that time. I grew up in the 1960's, and I remember it was a big event when our favorite TV shows finally came out in color. Also, cigarette advertising on TV was not prohibited until 1971. For me, it is hard to believe it has been 40 years, but seeing these old commercials is really startling, and I can understand how anyone under 50 would find it strange to see.
@twilightwindwaker Even though the show was broadcast in color, you still needed a color TV to see it in color. Our family did not get a color TV until 1975. I had a friend who let me watch his occasionally. The early sets were poor quality. One fear is that they gave off radiation, so we were told to sit at least 6 feet away. Performers had to wear blue shirts, which photographed as white, and avoid neckties with stripes, because they would strobe and vibrate on camera.
i smoke because fred Flintstone told me to. thanks fred! I especially like to sit around and have a few smokes while I watch my wife do all the yard work. she hands him the mop? they didn't show it but he beat the shit out of her after that. Fred taught me how to be a real man.
LMAO!!! OMG--I had no idea there was ever a commercial like this. Sorry---I hate cigarettes, but I find this so ironic that I can't not laugh at it. It's amazing to see how everything has changed since this t.v. show was on. It's messed up, but it's still funny...plus the Flintstones were like a precursor to the Simpsons in terms of animated cartoons as far as being aimed at adults. And imagaine all the crap that goes on on the Simpsons, Family Guy, etc. Not that shocking in comparison.
@SinclairDelux Problem is - Cadillac is shit, roflmao. Horrid american cars, horrid engineering, horrid looks. If you'd like to discuss this further. I'd gladly discuss this with you for another 15 minutes untill we both agree on that I'm right and you're wrong.
@llovemyllife They're made of rock and sticks, like everything else. I'm still trying to figure out how Fred drives his car when the front wheel can't turn left or right.
@llovemyllife The lighter probably consisted of two stones that rubbed together and made a spark. I have seen such lighters, that did not use lighter fluid.

im 15 too. cigs are quite attractive, as they are rebellious to your own body, but side effects would make me differ. your gf would be worried about your health unless she smokes too. btw your spelling is quite terrible.
Not so surprising considering that The Flintstones was first an adult animated comedy with adult themes in prime time. Only later was the focus shifted to kids who proved to be a bigger audience. Then, Fred and Barney became shills for cereal (Pebbles [both fruity and cocoa among others] named after Fred's daughter) and Flintstones vitamins.
Still available today the sugary cereal may not be so great for a kids health but the vitamins likely are.
Its not that bad. "The Flintstones" was not a kids' show, but was marketed as the first animated cartoon aimed at an adult audience, as well a s the kids. It ran in primetime, and had the same audience mix of any other sitcom at the time (for example "the Dick Van Dyke Show"). Couple that with the fact that tobacco advertising accounted for about 50% of all TV advertising, and this is not surprising. I also recall the Beverley Hillbillies doing Winston ads.
I read somewhere a few yrs. ago that someone did a survey asking men if they had a choice would they do Betty or Wilma. The results were somethin' like 60% Betty, 25% Wilma and 15% said Fred..........
abc had friend shilling away for welch's grape jam too. he was driving thru bedrock standin on a stone platform on rollers with a gigantic jar of jam standing next to him. ironically the original wilma and fred died of lung cancer as did betty
U guys don't think that the most disturbing thing was HOW THEY WERE TREATING THE WOMEN?! WTH?! So far as the cigarettes go, we see how that worked out in America. . .
