A Big Mac Combo in China cost 30%-40% less than the US. Transportation and rental cost are also low compared to the West. $1,000 US in China can last you 2 months and you would be pretty well off. So don't judge simply by the number, understand the while system.
Foreign companies cannot list their companies on Shanghai or Shenzhen bourses. Not even HSBC (Hong Kong Shanghai Bank of China) can list in the same city in which bears it's name (Shanghai) some 60 years ago.
Even when HSBC does list in Shanghai later this year (first in the history of the bourse), the tight capital controls held by the Chinese financial regulatory regime that prohibits taking out funds gained via IPOs will severely limit SSE's appeal. Capital controls are terrible in CHina.

And what you are referring to is not so much capital control but currency control. Now the West would have you believe that Chinese gov't kept those low for competitive purposes, which is true. But there are other reasons why the RMB need to be restricted...

The RMB needs to be restricted because if Chinese Gov't allows it to freely appreciate, China will experience what the USSR experienced when it tries to open it's market and turn capitalistic and it will destroy the country economically. And if you look closely at the trend of the RMB you'll notice that it's value has been steady going up. The China Gov't WANTs RMB to go up because that increase domestic spending power, which will increase internal spending.
China economy is a hostage of the foreign international system, but primarily of the American economy. China is incapable of domestic consumption on the order of production. So, when the United States catches cold, China gets pneumonia and that really is an important thing to understand that China does not have an economy as we understand it in the sense of substantial domestic consumption. The Chinese economy is overwhelmingly export-oriented and therefore China is a hostage to its consumers.
This is such an outdated statement and is completely untrue. China IS capable of domestic consumption and is showing it during this financial crisis. If what you said was true, how can China be one of the only handful countries with a positive growth throughout this entire crisis? These are numbers provided by the World Bank. What you're claiming is not what is happening. Explain that.

oh please. Take Morgan Stanley for example. They have put auxiliary representative offices in Shanghai staffed with 30 people. They have 2400 staffers in their Asian-Pacific HQ (excluding Japan) in Hong Kong.
Goldmans Sach, UBS, and JP Morgan has their largest office outside the US based in Hong Kong and only a small auxiliary force located in Shanghai and Beijing.

I concur that most MNC have their offices in HK. That is because HK is a tax heaven for many of these companies. What if you take a careful look at their business, you'll find that most of their business activities are in China. My company is also based in HK, but I sell to Chinese companies.
400 MNCs of the Global 500 are now in China with 256 of those in Shanghai. I'm in IT so I know that at least Cisco, EMC, Sybase, and MSFT are a few foreign companies in Shanghai right now.

Chinese financial bourses are not open to foreign investment. There is not a single Chinese International Financial Hub (except Hong Kong). Only 1 city in China is considered "developed" according to IMF Standards, Shenzhen.

Yes, China's growth has mostly been fueled by exports. China recognized that as a problem long time ago and has initiated numerous policies to encourage internal spending. And these policies are working. China are also putting their eggs in other baskets by developing strong trade relations with other countries in Europe.

I love how people use the word "exploit" without understanding the whole picture. The cost of labour is low in China because of low standard of living. A Big Mac Combo in China cost 30%-40% less than the US. Transportation and rental cost are also low compared to the West. $1,000 US in China can last you 2 months and you would be pretty well off. So don't judge simply by the number, understand the while system.

Foreign companies cannot list their companies on Shanghai or Shenzhen bourses. Not even HSBC (Hong Kong Shanghai Bank of China) can list in the same city in which bears it's name (Shanghai) some 60 years ago.
Even when HSBC does list in Shanghai later this year (first in the history of the bourse), the tight capital controls held by the Chinese financial regulatory regime that prohibits taking out funds gained via IPOs will severely limit SSE's appeal. Capital controls are terrible in CHina.

Are you talking about foreign companies investing in Shanghai or foreign companies being listed in Shanghai? Because they are two different things. And what you are referring to is not so much capital control but currency control. Now the West would have you believe that Chinese gov't kept those low for competitive purposes, which is true. But there are other reasons why the RMB need to be restricted...

Cost of labour is also influenced by the decision of the Central gov't to not let the Yuan to freely appreciate under market forces conditions.
Just like the Japanese Yen is kept up high in order to maximize the return Japanese exports (such as manufacturing of cars, Japan is the auto manufacturing high tech manufacturing hub of the world), exports cost more.
The Chinese on the other hand keep their export costs low since it serves as the "lower end manufacturing hub" of the world.

The RMB needs to be restricted because if Chinese Gov't allows it to freely appreciate, China will experience what the USSR experienced when it tries to open it's market and turn capitalistic and it will destroy the country economically. And if you look closely at the trend of the RMB you'll notice that it's value has been steady going up. The China Gov't WANTs RMB to go up because that increase domestic spending power, which will increase internal spending.

China economy is a hostage of the foreign international system, but primarily of the American economy. China is incapable of domestic consumption on the order of production. So, when the United States catches cold, China gets pneumonia and that really is an important thing to understand that China does not have an economy as we understand it in the sense of substantial domestic consumption. The Chinese economy is overwhelmingly export-oriented and therefore China is a hostage to its consumers.

This is such an outdated statement and is completely untrue. China IS capable of domestic consumption and is showing it during this financial crisis. If what you said was true, how can China be one of the only handful countries with a positive growth throughout this entire crisis? These are numbers provided by the World Bank. What you're claiming is not what is happening. Explain that.

But they can't simply let the RMB run wild and out of control. The advantage that China has over Japan is China has natural resources to which to sustain itself. The theory that China is completely dependent on US is loosing it's luster. Ask anyone who has ever done any type of business in China and they will tell you that Shanghai is an international city, equal that of Hong Kong and Singapore, if not better.

Shanghai is not an "International Financial Center". It is a regional financial hub of Yangtze and mainland China. The Central Gov't hopes Shanghai achieve IFC status in 2020.
A recent study shows that 35% of expats prefer HK, 30% prefer Singapore, and only 3% consider Shanghai good as a hub for living and international business.

Keep claiming that all you want but what you are saying here suggests otherwise. I have not yet met 1 real business man who has done business in China say that Shanghai is not just as strong as HK or Singapore. In fact Shanghai has SURPASSED HK to become the second busiest port in the world behind Singapore. At least, it is on par.
BTW, you can't simply define a city by financial alone. Shanghai is big in technology and has more large tech companies based here then both HK and Singapore.

You can't compare Japan and China because Japan aside from population also doesn't have enough resources to sustain itself. Japan does not have any natural resources. It can't even grow enough to feed its own people. Japan is dependent on export due to their lack of land mass and their geography.

That's what trade is for. Trade makes up for the lack of resources. That is the whole point of maritime trade. Other than trade, history has shown Japan is very capable of amassing resources (aka invasion of Dutch Indies and Manchuria 70 years ago).
80% of China's oil flows through the Straits of Mellaca. The USN can shut off 80% of China's oil flow from Middle East at the Straits of Mellaca. Same goes for Japan, What is your point?

Try not to spend too much time on Youtube, but also spend more time in reading news, specially the world news. If you do that, you'll that China is the only big country in the world that survived in this economic crisis, because of it's strong economy and relatively healthy financial system. The U.S. is asking China for help, the European countries are asking China for help. Actually, China is the biggest creditor of the U.S., so if China is a weak power in int'l finance, how can we do that??

China is not an advanced industrialized nation. It does not have a city that can rival New York, London, and Tokyo, the three pereniall leading financial command centers of the world.... Shanghai and Beijing cannot rival regional international power hubs like Hong Kong or Singapore in terms of financial strength to attract foreign investors because China is a highly government regulated central controlled enterprised economy.

The rule of law, freedom of press, wide use of English, pluralistic free capitalistic economy, lowest corporate tax rates in the world, and world class aviation, logistical, and transport facilities in the world is why Hong Kong and Singapore are decades ahead compared to Shanghai and Beijing counterparts.
More MNC make Hong Kong and Singapore their RHQ and Asian HQ than any other city in Asia (ex Japan).

Yes, HK has an extremely low corporate tax rate, so it may be true that more MNC make HK and Singapore their RHQ but if you look closely, their businesses is done in China. Look at the annual reports of companies like RBS, you'll notice their target market is China.

oh please. Take Morgan Stanley for example. They have put auxiliary representative offices in Shanghai staffed with 30 people. They have 2400 staffers in their Asian-Pacific HQ (excluding Japan) in Hong Kong.
Goldmans Sach, UBS, and JP Morgan has their largest office outside the US based in Hong Kong and only a small auxiliary force located in Shanghai and Beijing.
Different foreign companies? Nearly 50% of the FDI (foreign direct investments) into Shanghai come from Hong Kong companies.

I concur that most MNC have their offices in HK. That is because HK is a tax heaven for many of these companies. What if you take a careful look at their business, you'll find that most of their business activities are in China. My company is also based in HK, but I sell to Chinese companies.
400 MNCs of the Global 500 are now in China with 256 of those in Shanghai. I'm in IT so I know that at least Cisco, EMC, Sybase, and MSFT are a few foreign companies in Shanghai right now.

China doesn't need to be an advanced industrialized country in order to help the U.S. China IS NOW actually helping America to get through the current financial crisis (this is what the American gov't said, I never make this up). But anyway, no city in China (expect HongKong) can rival the three leading financial centers you mentioned, but China is chasing them and just right behind them. I remembered that Tokyo was nothing to the Western financial world 50 years ago, but look at it now!

erm..... Hong Kong is a part of China . I'm from Hong Kong actually and lived 6 yrs in London , too. Do you know that the cash point (ATM machines) where u can get cash, HK got it 15 yrs before London got in the 80's. The octopus , was 7 yrs earlier than london's Oyster card.
New York , London underground are full of beggars and thiefs. In Hong Kong's , it wldn't happen,they are clean with tv int he trains.
Beijing is a hell safer than NY. do some research mate.
