  • Marvelous. Dear tactful Sarah <3

  • Class all the way.

  • thank you

  • thanks for the video, fuck for the ringtone thing

  • That`s so hot! My favourite female vocalist- from everyone`s perspective theist or atheist there can be no doubt this lady is Divine-Sarah Vaughan

  • My dad saw Sarah Vaughan in Melbourne back in 1965 - SO jealous!

  • love to see white boys swinging like mr Bob James!

  • How much heart and soul can you pour into 2:49?

    wow...what a great song.

  • This is so tasty I'd put it on a sandwich if I could.

  • Bob is killin' it

  • Sarah Vaughan-The Sassy One- oh, boy my favourite jazz singer- I love her voice, she got it all!

  • thenoblequran (Ctrl+Enter)

  • i can say this video has influenced my life. i can't believe i made it so long without hearing this. THANK YOU FOR POSTING!

  • Ugh!!!! Her scattin is PURE PERFECTION!!!!

  • My replay button is crying for mercy.

  • When she say's "Woolworth's" I always think "B&M" now.

  • There are plenty of singers who could do this type of music again. Your all just looking in the wrong places. This isn't just something you file on a shelf and collect royalities it's a art form. I for one would like to see / hear other interpretations of Jazz before all the copywrites are sold off to the highest bidders.

  • Wow, that creamy voice! The sheer elegance and how she makes it look so easy, like she doesn't budge an eyelid. I'm completely in awe of this great singer. I love her the most!

  • Rid millers first song on the piano.. That's awesome haha if you don't know who I'm talking about, look him up on YouTube, this song was his inspiration to learn piano and he still retains this style sort of...

  • Best singer who ever lived. No contest! Others were good but she was the BEST!!!

  • wonderful!

  • voice of the century ? That be the Divine one. My favourite by far

  • Wow. Thanks.

  • You can download the audio-mp3 of this song at getyourmp3s doht cohm.

  • en estos casos jamas nadie es mejor que el otro.....pues simplemente son unicas....imcomparables e insustibles.......ahi esta la genialidad.......

  • hey bob james was pretty good before he sold out!

  • @963821 Totally agree. You know your music!!

  • not only can she sing shes sexy as a mf

  • There is nothing better than Sarah's voice. Period. xx

  • Not *like*, *LOVE* ^_^

  • J'avais de l'amour

    Des perles

    Des feux pour toi

    Je n'avais que des débuts

    Je t'aimais .

    Poetac

  • I ALSO HEARD HER IN A PARK JUST LIKE JIMMY SCOTT. I HAD A CHILD ON THE DAY SHE PASSED AWAY 4-4-90 AND MARTIN LUTHER KING. PASSED ON THAT DAY ALSO..

  • Ainda bem que existe música! E que música!

  • I love how she swivels in her chair. What an amazing voice; fierce and delicate at the same time.

  • Good Lord, she is the best. Makes me want to quit singin'!

  • This video was made the year after I met Sass at Tahoe. Bob James was her accompanist and she really dug his playing. She told me she wouldn't have him long because he could really play. I saw them at the Riviera in Vegas. From that time on, I was on the scene in Vegas and then L.A. Bob really could play.

  • this song was a peice of art! its so much soul put into it thats what i like about music of that paticular era its fascinating how she held that note at the end marvelous!!!!!

  • I love this song^_^

  • Mellifluous melodies and bell tone perfection, what more could anyone hope for? What an amazing talent, and too short a time on this broken planet.

  • i would travel back and forwarth in time, and lose all my posessions and free time for the voice and technique of sarah vaughn

  • always divine!

she gave so much...thank you for sharing

  • and art

  • Wonderful scatting! And so relaxed! The truely great scatters are all gone.

  • @wolf1750 I'm happy to say that Dianne Reeves and Nancy King are scatting up a storm. As are veteran Jon Hendricks and Kurt Elling and Kevin Mahogany on the male side. And we can't forget Bobby McFerrin.

  • sick vocals. queen vaughan.

  • greеееееaaaaaaat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • She's amazing!

  • Pure Talent. Thank you for the upload!

  • One was founded by F. W. Woolworth and the other Sam Walton

  • We're singing this in our jazz choir. It's funny, because my jazz teacher didn't think anyone would know what Walworths was (he was around during its time) so he changed it to Wal-Mart haha

  • Okay Krendog2, that store was actually Woolworths.

  • @Oaktownrob Well, seeing how they weren't founded by the same people anhd have nothig to do with each other besides having cheap stuff, then I have no idea how they are supposed to relate to each other.

  • Lesson 101 from the Divine Sarah Vaughan. Effortless. You can sing without having to belt it out. And Sassy is so good at this. Simply the best.

  • oh yes ...

thats what you are not expecting, but want to hear

    beautiful

  • I love the heaviness of her voice. Love her.

  • sassy enough?? I've got goosebumps..

  • Wow.. Good

  • I agree with Jamesbrown below..She is perfect and kept getting better with each passing year...listen to her album, Send In The Clowns from 81 ' ..Tour De Force ..better than Ella or Nina or anyone, I think..xo

  • WOW!! Young Sarah

    AWESOME singing!

Her tone of voice is smashing!!!!!!

    Luis

  • I would be lying if I said she's just a good singer, 'cause her voice is PERFECT!

  • whats a good jazz song to sing at a concert? hehe

  • o yea

i am on something that is not dave...

  • is that dave brubeck

    or am i on something

    btw holy shit 1:12 - 1:33

    and 2:30 omg

  • Lovely voice! talented singer.

  • The ever classy Sassy swingin' from the highest trapeze. Wonderful to see!

  • Comparing singers and styles is one thing...but saying that Sarah is better than Ella or that Ella is better than Dinah is just crazy. It's ALL GOOD...

  • @lennhart sarah vaughan at her best!!! doesn't she swing?

  • It don't git any better...sing it, Sarah ...oh yeah...

  • every girl singer of that time had their own style,, ella fitzgerald, sarah vaughan, peggy lee, lena horne, carmen mcrae, dinah washington, billie holiday, nina simone... i dont know why you people like to compare... all those real artist were the best!

  • AMEN TO THAT, The Jazz Street.

I wouldn't be able to put it in a way so close to my own heart.

  • i always remember sassy with a smile...i went to see her in the summer of 1989 at piedmont park...they had an industrial-sized fan on her L & R...before she started, she asked the crowd not to take pictures, ...she said "mother's not feeling well & it's really hot out here"...that lady's voice didn't fail her in the least...was a stellar performance...her drummer signed my LP after the set. little did i know that she would pass the next year...brillance under fire !

  • some say sarah loved Ella and lookep up to her when she was young, also musicians say her voice ran on as many octaves as a piano!

  • I think you should compare singers, actually. And Rose Murphy was the best, but Sarah was very good too in her own way.

  • You gotta be shitt'n me... Rose Murphy ?!?!

No freak'n way. There were so many people who couldn't stand to hear her for too long. Sarah's voice actually has gotten better as she aged, and her range increased dramaticaly. Compare the number of video's between the women here on Youtube, and you'll get a sense of what people perferred.

  • Perhaps technically Sarah's a superior singer to Rose Murphy, but - ah! Rose had more soul! And such beauty of spirit. Even you've got to admit that.

  • Absolutely NOT !!!

Rose Murphy stood out due to her high pitch and very mousy voice, which by-the-way doesn't lend itself too well to soulful singing. Perhaps she had a beautiful spirit, but I can say that about any singer.

Please submit one example of a soulful rendition by Rose Murphy. Please, if you can, submit it here on YouTube so that others may enjoy it also.

  • All right then, just take an earful of Honeysuckle Rose - it's here on Youtube, and don't be surprised if you start to feel tears springing from your eyes - tears of joy mingled with deep, deep pathos.

  • OK, I just listened to it and quite truthfully, I can't say that what I heard is either soulfull for heartfelt. I can't say that she even serious effort in the performance.

Sorry, maybe Rose Murphy is an aquired taste... you know, like raw clams or oysters.

If you want to hear something that will move you, try these:

"Somewhere over the rainbow sarah Vaughan.mov"

    and

"Sunday Night at the London Palladium 13-4-58 Last Part"

  • I agree, I love that one from Rose.

  • @Gangstagran I'm sorry but you can't be serious. Rose Murphy was a novelty act with great spirit but mousey voice that didn't stand the test of time. She's basically unlistenable. But Sarah Vaughan, God! I can and do listen to her endlessly. A once in a life time talent. Talent, not novelty.

  • Sarah Vaughan, had the extreme joy of

meeting her, and she was wonderful--

both on and off stage. She is in one word-

Fabulous... a true one of a kind performer!

    thanks- MM*

  • Why compare supremely gifted musicians ? We need them all ! EXACTLY! Other alien races would visit earth with thousands of sarah-alikes but whatever its earth with fucking moron humans!

  • WOW!

  • God damn she's peaking here

  • Each artist is single. Why compare supremely gifted musicians ? We need them all !

  • Just when I say Ella was the greatest jazz singer to ever live. I hear Sarah, I really don't know. What do you think?

  • They are good. Just pick the one your like more. But I would say Sarah is the diva I want.

  • as for the smoking effecting her voice--you got to realize the ciggerates were made differently in those days. usually non filtered for one--and ALOT less chemicals were put in or not at all. Most smokers in the early half of the 20th century rolled their own with real tobacco. that's not too bad for you.

  • MY FAVOURITE SINGER!!!

    always brilliant!

  • shes amazing

  • She is an AWESOME singer!!

  • Smoking can be hard on the cords, but there are many singers who tolerate the effects better than others. Plus, I know an opera singer who smokes! I figure if you are constantly working your instrument, it lasts longer. And the long term use by Sassy couldn't bring her down until the very end. She rocks no matter what!

  • Love Sarah Vaughan and MUCH respect to this goddess of jazz...but there is no way she could have sung opera chainsmoking the way she did! LOL

  • this is my favorite version

  • This girl has got something! Nicer and nicer iin each song she brings to the musical world. Sarita, you're amazing!

Kisses from the LUCKY DUCKIES to Sarah Vaughan

  • I like the Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli version way better.

  • she was definitely sexier in her younger days...it just shows what chain smoking and being on the road can do to you haha. I'm amazed that she chain smoked with that voice. She could have been an opera singer...crystal clear. A pure seductress haha.

  • and the sister still has it. chain smoking and all you can't take what God has given.

  • her voice did get a lot lower

  • A bit better than Ella... She really feelz the SWING!

  • nah not better - i think there equal. like patti and aretha, just give you different feels in the same genre. you cant deny ella, that woman could sing all day

  • i agree they are sooo equal probably like my two most favorite singers of all time each hearing them both sing the same song is like hearing 2 different songs it's so amazing the talent these women had :) I just wish I could have seen them perform

  • Sarah! Oh Sarah!!! Thanks God I discovered this song here!!! It's absolutely awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Brilliant!!!

  • rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrzaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • aguante

  • scatting is a lost art...most who attempt today are terrible, save for rachelle ferrell. This is a perfect jazz vocal.

  • you should hear ledisi - feeling orange sometimes blue. shes the new ella

  • sarah vaughan is my musical idol, if i could just learn half of her technique and voice control i'd consider myself accomplished. simply magnificent.

  • ...maybe if you try to lay your voice on the melody like a ship on the ocean moves with the waves, it might work?and never loose the power while you sing even when u sing piano.

  • Who can touch her?

    She's magnificent.

  • who's amy?

  • lol yeah ain't that the truth, amy just playing pretend, Sarah the real deal :D.

  • There's a voice.....

  • Yeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaah

  • ha,my name is sarah vaughn:D

  • Oh! the song from Bringing Up Baby!

  • Beautiful Woman, Beautiful Voice. Her voice always warms my heart.

  • this video fucking rules. That swing feels so good.

  • WOW is the only word to describe sarah vaughn vocals on this video. WOW over and over and over and over WOW!! dr. gatsby melodi, phd, nyc.

  • she also scats!!!

  • "Amy will be ok if she 'wakes up' and ditches her 'LEECH' of a husband Blake- who has turned

her into a Junkie! The guys a loser and like

the 'Losers' Billy Holliday attracted, he's only interested in her money which feeds his

Junkies habit! Sarah is one of Amy's Idols and

lets hope she gets herself cleaned-out and up

and 'ressurected' because she's a huge talent

who has the potential to be great!"

  • Not only do I not recognize Bob James in this video, I don't recognize Larry Rockwell, who was my bassist in Las Vegas 20 years later.

  • Very nice, thanx for posting!

  • Amy Winehouse forever

  • Amy "Whinge & whine" house is just a little girl mimicking these talented real women!

  • Everybody starts out imitating somebody. Amy will be all right in a few years I'm sure. At least she's imitating the right people, lol.

  • .....true! I couldn't have put it better myself!!

I just think (at the moment) Ms Whine-house is too overrated.....she's a great songwriter but that silly accent she 'sings' in really grates on me. I really try to appreciate her 'voice', but it ain't working for me. I hope she is around for a "few years" & proves me wrong, but for now it seems like the "Emperor's New Clothes"......everybody believing what they are told to believe.

  • I'm afraid I have very little respect for the commercial performers these days. I'm a firm believer in the proof being in the pudding...and I'm afraid the standard of the music just doesn't match up to the old greats such as Sarah. The few performers I do have respect for have proven themselves in post: Jamey Cullum and Diana Krall and to some extent good ol' Jules Holland.

  • Sarah Vaughn has a song called September Song. Amy Winehouse has a song called October Song where she refers to Sarah Vaughn. That's so Cool!

  • Thank goodness for You Tube better than most TV

  • Black Coffee melts me like Anita Baker...

    wow ;)

  • Bob James (Fourplay) is the pianist. Check the credits for the others.

  • I've never seen a young Bob James. I thought he was always old.

  • Who are the other musicians playing behind her? Especially the pianist.

  • Mm mm mm, mellow. This is what music is all about. Dig.

  • love it all i love her ranges her skill she is all talant

  • She is amazing I can see where Anita Baker gets her style. By the way is anita baker related to josephine baker?

  • Beautiful

  • thanks. i always liked "October Song," but never listened closely to the lyrics.

  • sorry, i mean sophie millman.lol.

  • sophie hillman abused this song. her version is terrific. this is good too

  • beautiful.

  • All i can say is WOW

  • I wish I could sing like that!

  • She and Ella are two of the only women who could scat so beautifully(that I know of).

  • check out betty carter

  • There's a reason she is called THE DIVINE ONE. Hit repeat and you'll see what I mean! Splendid.

  • wow! if not for youtube, i will never know Sarah Vaughan my entire life! im 17 yet i love all the great jazz and songs of Sarah & even Ana Fitzgerald..wow..a wondrous and a remarkable voice they posses! truly a God's gift to us..i wish i was alive in the past so i could witness and hear these amazing talents..

  • Ella Fitzgerald. I agree. Youtube, when used the right way, can be great.

  • o yeah.. imean ella..fitzgerald..sorry..

  • I find myself not even caring about the video quality or imperfections. This sound is just phenomenal. Jazz...the real thing!

  • I agree. The wonder of listening to her voice makes the video quality completely unimportant.

  • Imperfection is the only thing missing here!

  • she be right in the pocket

  • I Luv' her!! She's my idol!!!! The best voice ever!! Gorgeus!!! Wow!!!

  • perfection, the scatting, the trio, pure bliss

  • i love so much ella and sarah, but you must lisent judy garland's version at carneghie hall. javiercomas

  • Oh yes! What a woman...

  • i can't give anything but love babyyy..this song rocks!!!

  • Love her style...love the pianist too.

  • Wow! She puts so many contemporary singers of today to shame! What an amazing and beautiful singer. God bless the late (great) Sarah Vaughan.

  • one of my favorite jazz-titles, maybe only ella had done it better - maybe!!

  • I haven't seen anything of Sassy with that trio but I highly recommend picking up the Jazz Icons 2 DVD with some great late '50s/early '60s European TV performances.

  • This is a great rendition. I wish someone would post something of Sassy's when her trio was John Malachi, Joe Benjamin and the great Roy Haynes.
