brain: don't know enough specifics about her injurry to be sure. as different parts of the brain are responsible for comprehension and formation of language, it's certainly possible that her understanding is no worse than it ever was, she may just not be able to respond in the same way/as quickly/articulately as before.

I used to work at a Therapeutic Riding Stable and we did a ton of work with people with TBIs (Traumatic Brain Injuries). Each case is very different, but in every one we saw (even when the person couldn't talk at all), they understood everything you were saying with great clarity and even had amazing senses of humor. Gabby's struggle is extremely inspiring and I hope she continues to move forward in her recovery. =]

You asked about gabby Gifford and if she can comprehend the president...I don know her injury, but if she has a hard time forming words in speech that would be expressive -which is different from receptive ( understanding input or what you are hearing) . So, she could have speech issues and still be able to understand ( depending on her injury ) . I'm a special education teacher...
