Much of the music I enjoy was introduced to me through dance. Elisa Monte choreographed a magnificent piece to this. I saw it performed in duet by the Alvin Ailey Dance Company. The piece was superb as well as the music.
@Einhander49 you're missing the purpose of the piece. the very nature of what you call "repetitive and boring" helps to create a mental state of being in the listener that they can become entranced in.
@Einhander49 i used to say the exact same thing, i'd even argue with my band leader, saying that it was simple to the point of banality.
i listened to this song high once, and what had seemed to be simple and lame was actually highly complex, and almost "living". yes, each measure and its neighbors sound very much alike. but zoom out and listen to the birth and death and transitions of ostinatos throughout the song that you can bob your head to. that's how it makes sense to me...
Wonderful. Can't you get it properly converted to audio from your video recording and then upload it as one piece, as one video, on Youtube? The conversion glitches and splitting detract from the beauty of the piece. Perhaps someone else can do this for you if you are not able to do it yourself. Isn't the complete video available on websites in Japan?
I wonder if KWSO would consider this? Petition? Wouldn't it be cool to have a full orchestra timpanis and all sorts of exotic drums but from all over the world have the budget for the finest equipment and players /// this I don't know
I have a sense that if you try is in an improv sort of situation it would not work...it's a total precision piece. For other use, yeah, go for it. exquisite
"I remember when I first heard this piece back around 1980. I thought it was Philip Glass but soon realized there was something different about it from Glass. The first copy I bought was on ECM records and it still sounds like something new and different 30 years later." -Sparky's Dad
@thawtz I plan on doing the exact same thing. I'm in Baltimore and I'll be taking a trip to Albany to hear this performed live. My 2 hrs. of my 6 hour drive will consist of at least 2 different renditions of this entire piece.
Everything builds on itself... the repetition becomes dull but then finds life behind the next new sound regaining its importance.... I really love its simplicity... I feel like I'm listening to my childhood and the sound of development of personality
@Underhill182 I haven't explored much of Riley, but I do think "In C", in its greatest performances, is a solid work. However, I own almost all of Reich's Nonesuch recordings and only 2 or 3 Riley, so I guess you can tell where my sympathies lie :)

p.s. why are you so angry about it anyway?

How repetitive and boring. I'm not saying its bad, but music this simple shouldn't be this long.
For fuck's sake, it's the same crap for 8 minutes before they alter a few notes here and there.

I prefer this properly scored music to the 'choose a theme and play it until you get sick of it' idea behind some of Terry Riley's music.
I like the idea but this has a much more passionate sounding end product.
