@54lsh wtf? you're kidding right? I like Madonna, but I didn't see her belt out all the D's, E's, F's and the High G here. Nor the low E in Buenos Aires. All her keys were brought down and they butchered this song. Eva is supposed to have a strong presence as well as a high pitched voice which is the reason for all the high belting. Patti belts the POO out of this and every song in the damn musical. Besides, Antonio Banderas is ok, but Mandy out-sings him. So how the hell is the movie "better"?
I don't mean to belittle the movie as I believe hard work went into it and it wasn't bad really, but I just fail to understand how you think the movie is better. They softened Eva by giving her Another Suitcase and not having a strong belt like Patti. The Evita we see in the movie just doesn't equal the one we see here.
Well I have to say Patti LuPone probably sings the best Evita that I've seen, it's currently playing in my hometown and the actress who plays Evita is from Broadway but she has to literally yell the high notes to hit them where as Patti just does it will amazing ease and that is what she's so renowned on Broadway!! And the musical I believe shows the true Eva where as the movie tries to make you sympathize with Eva
I was never really a fan of LuPone but actually seeing her act and sing, she really has a good voice. She hits those notes as if she's just talking. Very impressive
I saw both broadway original and movie, both were great in their own .
The movie showed more in other ways to the vision than the play , but the play made up in sound , both were great . I once never thought of "Jewy" or "jesus"kind of charcters,
I wish you could have, too! I was 24 or 25 and was lucky enough to have great seats. Mandy Patinkin "Che" came down the aisle and stood next to me, singing up to Patti LuPone onstage. It was, and still is, awesome!
say what you want, patti lupone is amazing and owns the role, but I was very pleased with madonna's portrayal in the movie version. and the fact she is not a perfect singer adds more authenticity to the performance. i think she (madonna) was amazing and perfectly cast.
no he wasn't, but he was one of the bigger figures of that time. When they wrote this play, they used him to symbolize revolution, which is what he was all about.
Evita is a musical, so why not judge the music? Leaving fame and name recognition out of it, most people with a wide exposure to different types of music would recognize Madonna as being a barely adequate singer, whereas in Patti you are hearing and seeing pure passion, power and showmanship on a monster level. I can certainly see how some people are turned off by Patti's full frontal assault on a tune, but making any comparison between this GREAT singer and Madonna is laughable
I don't particularly like Madonna either, but Patti also has problems. Not vocally - she can belt like nobody since Minnelli. *grins* But later on, especially in the recent revival of Gypsy, what you said, "assault", is all she did to the tunes. She screamed.
There's a difference between power and volume. Yes, she can sing, but this is a musical PLAY, and she also needs to act.
I'm argentine. Why is it that Che Guevara is on stage? Although he was communist and Peron was fascist he wasn't pursued by the gorvernment. His fame grew up in Cuba. Why is he caught by some men in the play?

nah I think the movie was really good but Madame LuPone is better, she doesn't overdoes it, she just has a big voice, and it's a very big song, its supposed to be not overdone, but powerful and large
@ilovebobgunton I said Juan Peron, the character. I mean it's retarded, no other character resorts to Spanish stereotypical accents yet for whatever reason, Juan Peron does. I am sure Bob Gunton is great but that fake accent distracts from his performance
Julie Covington's vocals on the original album are still the best. No one sang "I'd Be Surprisingly Good For You" with such seduction and innocence. Patti and Elaine although are great in their own different ways, seemed more concerned with delivery than interpretation
Oops, my mistake! I actually meanted Julie Covington. She was the first Eva I heard but it was an old tape recording from my father and we never knew who sang that. Only info he remembered is that it was from an english cast. Anyway, I just found the album for download and no doubt - Convington has the sweetest voice and still strong when necessary. I like her particularly in "Another Suitcase in Another Hall".
Actually "Another Suitcase In Another Hall" is not sung by Eva, it's by Juan Peron's lover that she kicks aside. Which if you're listening to the original album the part of Juan's lover is played by Barbara Dickinson. Julie's only part on the song is the beginning ("Hello and goodbye! I just unemployed you!"
But what about CATS? CATS is awesome, and the Phantom is a masterpiece.
But yes, I absolutely love Evita. It changed entire perception of theater. I agree it is the BEST he wrote, but it is not the only good thing he wrote.
Agreed. This is his most accesible, perfectly balanced piece ever. Great songs and not so heavy arrangements and a variety of tempos. All his other stuff is hit (Jesus Christ Superstar) or miss (Cats)
Has anyone seen Seth Rudetsky deconstruct this video? Take a close look at around 5:03- Patti totally misses Peron's arm when she goes to link hers with his.
The orignal Broadway cast with Ms. Patti was just great - I went back to see it 3 times! All other attempts at this production fell short (including Madonna in that god awful film version of hers!)
YES!!! I was at the movies several months ago seeing a movie with a friend (i can't recall which one... but that doesn't matter.) and we were discussing this! Glad to know we are not alone in our thoughts ;)
she is the most incredible actress in the world, and really, really nice for those that think shes a bitch. i got to meet her and she was really respectful to us and fun to be around. go patti!
"Full-throttle soprano?" Please, don't misunderstand me, I love Patti to bits, but I think the announcer is a little confused. Patti is a mezzo or an alto (probably more mezzo), but she is not a full-blown soprano. Sopranos sing Johanna's role, Christine, and other such high roles. Not Eva, Mrs. Lovett, or Mama Rose.
Sorry if this is offensive, but I don't want any confusion on that subject. There is a huge difference between soprano and Patti.
I think she has a wonderful range. Girls are quite the opposite of men -- their vocal ranges favor the high notes rather than the low. The fact that she has such a solid and resonant low register makes her unique amongst a sea of soprano women who all sing like screeching violins.
i love both this version and the Madonna version. Madonna sounds more like she is giving a speech, whilst i adore the way Patti Lupone just belts out the bits where she adresses the crowd
dude, they are talking about the actual Eva Peron, not Patti. Eva was born a brunette, but dyed her hair blonde. It's obvious they use a wig in the show. It's just not possible for them to dye her hair every night from brown to blonde and then again brown for the next night's performance... you should really think more before commenting...LuPWNED!
just to clarify for some nutso who thinks patti was all disrespectful with the play... she didnt write of direct the damn thing she just did what was asked of her.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
which actress in the world could play eva peron's character in the most horrible way???? obviously an american... this lady plays eva's character in the most unrespectfull and insulting way
What is disrespectful is for a person to use such a terrible word to describe another person, regardless of said person's OPINION of how someone plays a part. Surely you could be more articulate and less crass. And she is playing the part the way she was directed to play it. Her voice and stage presence are magnificent. No one can belt that song out like Patti, no one!
You are acting extremely immature about this. As for her performance being "unrespectfull" (since you chose to make up a new word) and insulting, if you find that it is, the blame isn't really on her. If anyone, blame the writer or the director.
And please be a little more mature and polite, instead of cussing.
if i made up a new word, then excuse me for not being borned in "the best country in the world"...and i stay in all the names that i said.you can take it or leave it.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i don't give a fuck give me a fucking break and you can start to considerate other cultures as good cause, for you to know, you are not the fucking center of the world.
You made a logical error of equating global location with Englisg competency. English is the second language of many people, even in the US. No one on this post referred to the US as "the greatest country in the world"...that would seem to be your own projection. It's certainly not my view.
Really her performance made me a fan of Eva Peron I think you should say who could write such a play about Eva Peron and thats Webber and from there it came from that crappy book so its not just Patti
i still love the musical... but eva peron wasn't the bitch that they show in here. you may not understand this, cause youare from a different culture. but she wasn't bad. she did what she thought was correct. maybe she was simple woman. but she did more than all of us... i hope this comment ends with the controversy.
Ohhh noo I love Eva as well I admire her I just mean the book The Woman With The Whip was soooo offfff the real story it made her out a psycho bitch. Then Webber used that book as the basis for the musical. I love Patti and I love Eva I feel she was done wrong by the musical to an extent but I in no way blame Patti
I was saying how she portrays the character is how it was written, the book made her seem this way. Patti does portray how the book says though. Meaning its not just patti its what she was told to do
How dare you speak of Patti LuPone that way. You are the one who is "unrespectful". That's not even a word. The word you were looking for is disrespectful. You should at least use actual words if you are going to try to slam somebody, that just shows how little you really know. And she is one of the best stage performers of the modern era, so I would hardly say she is horrible. Seriously, MARIONOHARRY1980, don't make derogatory comments about things you obviously don't understand.

She didn't dye her hair blond! It's a wig. She accepted the tony award moments later with her long brown straight hair.
spudwas 3 years ago
dude, they are talking about the actual Eva Peron, not Patti. Eva was born a brunette, but dyed her hair blonde. It's obvious they use a wig in the show. It's just not possible for them to dye her hair every night from brown to blonde and then again brown for the next night's performance... you should really think more before commenting...LuPWNED!
MateoG7788 3 years ago 2
Yes. Patti is wearing a blonde lace wig during 'A New Argentina' and a regular brunette wig during 'Buenos Aires...

I love the way she sings "It doesn't matter" slightly quickly - so brassy and magnif.
tadzio999 3 years ago
just to clarify for some nutso who thinks patti was all disrespectful with the play... she didnt write of direct the damn thing she just did what was asked of her.
Selendomono 3 years ago

babbagecabb 3 years ago
When she died her hair that color... She was born with dark hair, but died it blond.

which actress in the world could play eva peron's character in the most horrible way???? obviously an american... this lady plays eva's character in the most unrespectfull and insulting way
what a cunt
MARIANOHARRY1980 3 years ago
I'm going to say that you're a fan of Eva Peron?
It's not an entirely realistic portrayal of her, it's not meant to be. I thought she was fantastic, but I guess I was wrong according to you.
A hell of a lot better than Madonna.

MARIANOHARRY1980 3 years ago
The "Real" Eva Peron was very complex, but I believe that Patti LuPone was the closest to hitting her personality dead on!
macrent2 3 years ago 3
What is disrespectful is for a person to use such a terrible word to describe another person, regardless of said person's OPINION of how someone plays a part. Surely you could be more articulate and less crass. And she is playing the part the way she was directed to play it. Her voice and stage presence are magnificent. No one can belt that song out like Patti, no one!

MARIANOHARRY1980 3 years ago
You are acting extremely immature about this. As for her performance being "unrespectfull" (since you chose to make up a new word) and insulting, if you find that it is, the blame isn't really on her. If anyone, blame the writer or the director.
And please be a little more mature and polite, instead of cussing.

if i made up a new word, then excuse me for not being borned in "the best country in the world"...and i stay in all the names that i said.you can take it or leave it.

it has nothing to do with location, only how well you studied

i don't give a fuck give me a fucking break and you can start to considerate other cultures as good cause, for you to know, you are not the fucking center of the world.

MARIANOHARRY1980 3 years ago
You made a logical error of equating global location with Englisg competency. English is the second language of many people, even in the US. No one on this post referred to the US as "the greatest country in the world"...that would seem to be your own projection. It's certainly not my view.
gabsylv 3 years ago
Really her performance made me a fan of Eva Peron I think you should say who could write such a play about Eva Peron and thats Webber and from there it came from that crappy book so its not just Patti
DonJuan1992 3 years ago
i still love the musical... but eva peron wasn't the bitch that they show in here. you may not understand this, cause youare from a different culture. but she wasn't bad. she did what she thought was correct. maybe she was simple woman. but she did more than all of us... i hope this comment ends with the controversy.
MARIANOHARRY1980 3 years ago
Ohhh noo I love Eva as well I admire her I just mean the book The Woman With The Whip was soooo offfff the real story it made her out a psycho bitch. Then Webber used that book as the basis for the musical. I love Patti and I love Eva I feel she was done wrong by the musical to an extent but I in no way blame Patti
DonJuan1992 3 years ago
Agreed.
XxSaigonSweetiexX 3 years ago
what do you mean by its not JUST Patti, the actors in the play have nothing to do with the puting together of the story.
KaraokeKid22 3 years ago
I was saying how she portrays the character is how it was written, the book made her seem this way. Patti does portray how the book says though. Meaning its not just patti its what she was told to do
DonJuan1992 3 years ago
no, ok, thanks for explainin that.
KaraokeKid22 3 years ago
patti rocks your fuckin socks and you know it!!!!!!!!!!!
wickedfreak1234 3 years ago 3
How dare you speak of Patti LuPone that way. You are the one who is "unrespectful". That's not even a word. The word you were looking for is disrespectful. You should at least use actual words if you are going to try to slam somebody, that just shows how little you really know. And she is one of the best stage performers of the modern era, so I would hardly say she is horrible. Seriously, MARIONOHARRY1980, don't make derogatory comments about things you obviously don't understand.
