Avatar is part of a racist trend in Hollywood movies, depicting the "White Messiah," surpassing and saving the indigenous people. In "The Last Samurai" it was the Japanese. In "Dancing With Wolves," it was the Native Americans. In Avatar it was the blue people tribe.
Does this make Avatar a racist move? I think its debatable. What is clear to me is that movies that follow racist trends should be criticized for doing so. Avatar does.
@qonf So what your saying is, because the white guy is the hero, that makes the film racist? That actually makes you the racist friend, you see a white guy save the day and you automatically act like they're trying to turn him into Jesus, wtf? No, he's just a white guy, do you have a problem with white guys?
@joezetank I said no such thing! Read the comment before replying to it please.
What i said was: "Avatar is part of a racist trend ... and should be criticized as such." That is distinct from saying that Avatar is [explicitly] a racist film! Fool.
Avatar is one of several movies (dances with wolves, and Last Samurai come to mind) that i wouldn't say are racist, but do have a healthy dose of western ignorance. In all of these movies, it takes a "white" man to help the savages overcome their "white" oppressors. it has a sort of arrogance about it, and it seems to always cast the minority as helpless without the guidance of the more intelligent and powerfull foriegner.
