Chapter 51, starting at verse 14, In: "The Gospel of the Buddha" by Paul Carus, covers this paradox of fight / pacifism methodically and comprehensively.
I am not going to deny that this is a very beautiful story, But I llive in NYC and travel mass transit and if you think this method would work forget it. One would have to use the other method to protect others, NYC is a tuff city.. One evening on my block at 9:00pm and was mugged. The young adult dragged me through the street untill this rage came over me and I lifed my cane and said I am now going to kill you. The youngster ran away as fast as he could. IN THIS CAS I WAS THE HERO.
great story, i've calmed a person while at work who was having a tough time by simply distracting him and offering some skittles which i had just opened, he accepted saying "your funny bro" and the tension was gone.
The thing I don't like about this is that Dass says that this was a story that Terry Dobson 'told' him ... and he may have, but here he is reading the story as published in Terry's book that I remember reading a couple of decades ago.
to say that life doesn't work this way is not taking into account all the possible situations one may encounter that can be resolved with, humor, distraction, and many other methods that can be used to "cloud men's minds" or clarify them I know I've stopped many a man bent on violence with many different tact's to long for these little chat boxs to elaborate.....granted won't work every time but I've a pretty good % rating.......close to 95% when I'm sober not as high when I've been in my cups
..then the old man offered the drunk a place to stay. He gratefully accepted. When he got to the home of th eold man he had tea with them. He took care of their persimmon tree. He did a terrific job. The fruit looked delicious. So delicious in fact that one day
Takes a lot to diffuse violence that way; a right combination of words, timing and spirit to start with. It's not impossible, just difficult and takes a long time to reach that level of proficiency. But often times we give up too quickly and revert back to an easier way out; physical means. Modern world=quick fix world
Yeah great outlook apart from the fact I trained in Aikido for quite some time and back then would have belived you could accomplish things in that manner then i went to work as a bouncer trust me aikido philosophy dosen't mean anything in the modern world if somebody wants to fight they will no amount of talking or love will prevent it
@skink00 For those situations you learn the physical aspect. But also the physical aspect always helps to understand the mental aspect. (And ultimately the spiritual aspect, if you want.)
If you believe it or not, people are not born brutal and violent. But sometimes things happen that make people desperate. And people articulate this in different ways. Too often they hurt people (even them selves).
I agree with Noirprox. Compassion and love is the do of Aikidoka. Anything else is Aikijutsu.
Ridiculous to say this isn't how life works. The links between depression, alcohol and aggression are clear, and beating the crap out of alcoholics is hardly a just resolution. Most violent acts are committed by people who are deranged in some way or another. True, an assailant on PCP would likely call for actual martial technique in response, but such an attacker would likely not be the most mentally focused person anyway. If you want to learn how to really hurt people, get some counseling.
talking to a drunk is one thing.try doing that with someone who just wants to rape rob and kill you and hopped up on pcp and i don't think it will work to well.
you are absolutely right. but i think all he is saying is to have compassion. jus dont be ready to judge quickly and start action..but if there is incident like rape or rob...one should stand up and fight.
How many such people have you actually met? Did they tell you that is all they wanted or how would you know that? Maybe there are reasons why some people get violent or angry. The example in this video is just one story. Everybody has a story, even the most brutal criminal. If you open your mind to it you might find compassion too like the old man did.
That was fucking beautiful. I wonder if it was bullshit though. there was a story in Angry White PJ's about something similar with an aikido student reasoning with a group of guys who were about to stomp him. I like this explanation of aikido alot. odds are you wont grab someone's wrist and send them flying, but you won't have to if they never attack in the first place.
I can relate from three sides. I've been a lost soul, at one time a young man studying karate and now an old man - with the rank of Nanadan ( 7th degree)
Old old story, not certainly not original with this guy, told by many in aikido and other martial arts as an proverb. Supposed to be an example for young people of how using ones head is better than using violence.
Such a beautiful story. If only more people in the world could think like the old man. =]

WE TALK AND TRY TO SHOW THE TRUTH,
IF THEY DONT WANT TO ACCEPT AND WANT TO DOMINATE OTHERS, THERE ARNT HARMONY WITH WORDS, ONLY SOME PUCHES, THATS A VERY GOOD MEDICINE.

Ignoring 'Ram Dass' anti uSa (dawn) programming during the story..,a very telling story.
The thing that the uSa once was...subverted by a fallen priesthood who birthed the very 'philosophy' Ram Dass diverts to.
