  • They all hate The Bends and Pablo Honey.

They rarely play anything from it.

  • @dominickkk5 they like the bends a lot more than pablo

  • @dominickkk5 fuck off, get away from humans!

  • Seems like Thom is mocking his original work...which is fair enough, since it is his mostly (and the band's).

However, I can't help wonder if their pretensions will mean that what they release today with all it's seriousness and meaning, will be a joke in 10 years....

I guess that's the price you pay when you are part of a band that loves attention but hates popularity...

  • woww i'll die to be so close to radiohead listening to their best songs

  • he's like my girlfriend when she left

  • I think it just sounds like the way that sentance should be percieved, whiny - not really important what it said, just the way it was said.

And come on... after all these years they should be allowed to do it a bit differently, if just to amuse themselves.

  • its kinda annoying that thom mocks his own work when it might not mean shit to him people really like the bends

  • he's fucking drunk & hates playing this gig...forgetting words, late on timing...beard? Singing "blah blah blah?...what the fuck is that?

  • I agree, if he decides to play a song that he doesn't like, play it right dammit. Don't butcher it, it sounds like shit.

  • If you look at the rest of the footage from that gig, you can tell Thom's quite enjoying himself. He's always liked playing small and intimate shows.

  • In the Jigsaw Falling Into Place vid he's talking about how fun the gig is.

  • Just watched the entire gig. Thanks alot for uploads this fo us all, it is awesome,

  • Well, that's certainly clear enough. Thank you :D

  • Well, if you consider the song, his attitude might not reflect what the song is about anymore. This was right after their rise to fame and Pablo Honey and how that changed things around him. Considering how far past The Bends he is, it's not too much of a stretch to guess that he either looked back and saw that didn't really happen or that the song doesn't reflect his current world view.

  • From Thom Yorke-

"It's incredibly annoying that no one's noticed the giggles in that album. The song 'The Bends' is completely jokey, completely taking the piss. None of that stuff had ever happened to us when we wrote it. And I really do wish I'd never written that fucking song... every single fucking interview : "Do you wish it was the sixties ?" No, I don't wish it was the fucking sixties - Levis jeans wish it was the sixties - I certainly fucking don't."

  • @Inhale456

lol Levis jeans wish it was the sixties

  • im so happy they played this song.. i thought they would never play it again

  • In an interview right after Kid A, Thom kinda seemed like he wanted to just be done with all of this. Then you see performances after In Rainbows, he seems so much happier.

  • "I wish it was the sixties i wish we could be happy, i wish i wish that something..." I wonder why thom kind of mocks this line. In recent performances of the bends, i feel like it happens a lot more often. I love radiohead and that line, so it's not really neat when he does that.

  • Hahah totally but I read on an interview that he wrote that song as a joke and that for the album they needed an extra song and he played it and so it got huge but that he wishes he had never written it! which is weird bec. they hate most of the songs that got them that big. Like Creep n the bends. They're awesome tho.

  • They (thom) also dislike high and dry. I'm sure they haven't performed it live in forever, and even then, during the bends era, when it was played - seldom - it wasn't done often. I personally really like the song; however, thom said somthing about the record company harrassing radiohead to put it on the album.

  • [on The Bends]

"It's incredibly annoying that no one's noticed the giggles in that album. The song 'The Bends' is completely jokey, completely taking the piss... And I really do wish I'd never written that fucking song - it's become the bane of my life. Hundreds of journalists asking - every single fucking interview : "Do you wish it was the sixties ?" No, I don't wish it was the fucking sixties - Levis jeans wish it was the sixties - I certainly fucking don't."

  • I think this show was the day - or close - after the release of In Rainbows. They seem kind of enjoying it. Good show anyway.

  • ahahahah

  • the bends is in the 3 place in the q magazin in the category best aalbum of the world !!

  • thom enjoying himself ^^

  • Thom bout The song 'The Bends:

"Is completely jokey, completely taking the piss. None of that stuff had ever happened to us when we wrote it. That was our Bowie pastiche, our joke song ! And I really do wish I'd never written that fucking song - it's become the bane of my life. Hundreds of journalists asking - every single fucking interview : "Do you wish it was the sixties ?" No, I don't wish it was the fucking sixties - Levis jeans wish it was the sixties - I certainly fucking don't". : D

  • I'm so glad to read this, Love it also when Thom goes "nia nia nia" during this "fucking" song :p

  • 1:49 to 1:52 is the beeest! JAJAJJAA

  • well i was right in front of him all through the gig and never thought he was drunk--he was goofy that night because the day was long and chaotic, they moved the venue last minute and started almost 4 hours later.

  • Drunk, but very funny !

Radiohead are will always be a great band !

  • Shut the hell up you tool, you obviously have not heard Radiohead live for youself, their the best live band ive ever heard.

  • Oo drunk yorke ! ^^

  • 1:49 to 1:52

  • the end of this song its one of the best things ever happend in my life

  • Thom drunk a bit too much at this gig, methinks.

  • great voice..

  • sober the fuck up

  • This is the worst version of the bends I have ever seen. Such a great song too.

  • odd live version..

    is he drunk?

  • very drunk, I think... but come on... it's nice

  • yeah hes definately intoxicated in one way or another, but he also slurs the line "i wish it was the sixties" because it was meant to be sarcasm. he doesn't wish it were the sixties.

  • I just don't understand people that've listen to In Rainbows and say OK Computer is their best...mmm...at least say KID A!

In Rainbows is they best period

  • wow yea i dunno im gonna go with ok comp

  • sloppy i think its one of the most put together albums ever! amnesiacs awesome but i thnk most of it sounded like a train wreck if ur sayin those 2 are better id say ok was kinda of a blueprint for those two, i think hail to the thief is horrible

  • I think you think too much and it quite hurts my head doing this routine convincing of mine.

Think what you want and may, just don't vociferate it on to me, 'cause I won't listen to it.

  • As much as I agree that OK Computer is a masterpiece, it all comes to preference at the end of the day.

And in the end, my preference is that Kid A is better then OK Computer.

  • in rainbows does it for me

  • Hail to the thief is their best

  • Truth.

  • HAHAHAHAHHAAAH @ 01:50 he sounds like he's one of the guys in South Park xD

  • Comment removed

  • The guy's mumbling his words...genius!

  • thom drunk its always good thom

  • This song was written at a time when radiohead wanted to do something with their music, btu hadn't yet. A very insecure feeling, especially when they were starting to get a lot of publicity. "The bends" means coming up too quickly in water which is essentially what thom felt he was doing.

  • part of why they are so good is the way they manage to make songs about things they have strong feelings about

  • unbelievable.

  • Who are my real freinds? or haVE THEY ALL GOT THE THE BENDS

  • i wish Radiohead to do songs like their three first albums....they are still amazing...Muse, Coldplay, all that bands are sons of radiohead,,but these days they are too experimental to me. with their new stuff i dont feel the sensation of hearing "the perfect album" like "The bends" or "Pablo Honey"

  • You honestly think Pablo Honey is a better cd than In Rainbows or Kid A? Wow...

  • i love "in rainbows" but i agree with him, i really prefer "the bends" and "ok computer"

  • Yeah, MAYBE OK Computer, but.. Their new stuff is amazing. In my opinion, of course.

  • and actually "pablo honey" is not better than "in rainbows"

  • pablo honey has like the first 5 songs i think r pretty good but the rest I did sink into it yet:P

  • the bends maybe...but pablo honey was faaaaaar from the perfect album.

i love that they experiment and push music places where it's never been. the landscape would be so much more fun if more bands did the same thing

  • OK Computer, Kid A, The Bends, and In Rainbows are much better than pablo honey could ever hope to be

  • Lol I love that he's mocking his own song. I think he's just grown up and so he was fucking with it because he feels a little different now then the lyrics he wrote before.

In either case it's an amazing song which I love as well.

  • It's not really that he feels different now. It's a matter of what this song was to them when they wrote it, and that was a fun, jokey type of song. Thom Yorke said in some interview that its actually kind of annoying that most people never got that. Lol, sadly, I probably wouldn't have either if I didn't read that. Sorry Thom.

  • Hmm... considering the lyrics are so serious I'd love to see that interview. You can tell when Thom's being fun, and this song's lyrics are not that fun Thom it's the serious Thom. Anyway when I saw them in Tampa they closed with this song and he was much more serious so it could be that he had some drinks in him this night haha.

  • I shouldn't have said interview because I don't actually know where it came from, but several seemingly reliable web sites have the following quote from Thom Yorke:

"It's incredibly annoying that no one's noticed the giggles in that album. The song 'The Bends' is completely jokey, completely taking the piss. None of that stuff had ever happened to us when we wrote it. That was our Bowie pastiche, our joke song..."

  • "...And I really do wish I'd never written that fucking song - it's become the bane of my life. Hundreds of journalists asking - every single fucking interview : "Do you wish it was the sixties?" No, I don't wish it was the fucking sixties - Levis jeans wish it was the sixties - I certainly fucking don't."

I'm not saying this is a for sure thing, this could be completely wrong. Either way, he must not regret writing the song so much anymore, considering they're still playing it.

  • I don't know, the first time I heard the song I thought it sounded really sarcastic and mocking...which is why it's one of my favorite songs from the band

  • i dont think he ruined it at all... in fact i thought the harmony at the beggining was really cool!

  • Yeah honestly, sometimes I wish Thom would take this song seriously. It's an amazing song, no reason to fuck around with it.

  • i don't think thom is intentionally trying to ruin it - i think he's just pretty drunk.

  • Why is he ruining it? I don't get it. The bends is RH's top10 song imo

  • clearly he was adjusting something.

  • sometimes he is such a jerk

so what , this song is not cool anymore?????

well for me , it is , still , one of the best radiohead songs and the lyrics are awesome and meaninfull , at least to me.

I WISH I WAS THE SIXTIES I WISH I COULD BE HAPPY I WISH THAT SOMETHING WOULD HAPEN!!!!!!!!

  • Not sure if you're being serious or not but it is a very infantile lyrics. it was written as such though - I remember reading an interview with Thom where he was saying he couldnt believe some of the things people took seriously - like the bends he wrote as a total comedy song - it's so ridiculously whiny.

I liked the fact he mocked the bridge lyrics it shows that if he ever did take them seriously, he's grown up.

Also REALLY hope they keep playing this song on tour!!

  • so 1995...

  • Did he forget the lyrics?

  • drunk?

at least he has fun, not like in the 90's =)

  • Look at all those exaggerated guitar strums LOL! they're too funny

  • I could see them having issues with the old songs while they were trying to progress, but now that they've made a name for themselves I think it's cool that they'd pay homage to their past work...Plus they give it...the..."treatment"

  • Why would he be embarassed by it though, I dont get it. The Bends is one of their greatest songs ever.

  • its like hes taking the piss of what they used to be like

  • its like hes taking the piss of what they used to be like

  • This still is a cool rock tune, but it's amazing how much they have advanced throughout the years!

  • hes just taking the piss. he wrote that like 15 plus years ago, im sure hes just somewhat embarrassed by it so he flubs it on purpose just to goof off. or he couldnt care to remember. imagine how many times hes had to sing those lyrics,.. they rule too hard to care about his on stage revelry. its just one song of many

  • Haha it kind of seems like they're making fun of themselves, but it's still an awesome performance.

  • Sometimes, people on coment, you are such a pain in the ass.

  • Yeah you are a totally awesome dude and you wish you could eat more macaroni cheese but you are fat. Hahahahaha!

  • Yeah I wish Thom put more effort in this song live, because its a really hard one to nail.

  • uhh, obviously he forgot the lyrics.. they hardly do Bends tracks anyway. This is what you would have to expect.

  • I think Thom gets so lost in the music he forgets the lyrics. I've noticed its always in the big songs like airbag etc.

  • ahhahaha I laughed out loud when he came back and said "friends" after fiddling with the knobs. This is great.

  • Haha this is NOT their best performance. He's like "baby's got the bends..." *goes off to mess with miscellaneous knobs* "...friends!" And the sixties thing. were they drunk or something? Still this is hilarious and makes me love them a lot. <3

  • haha how he comes back after playing with his amp cracks me up too

  • Thom disliked punk. Really.

  • It's a great song and I'm sorry Thom doesn't like to sing the lyrics he penned years ago. At one time he felt this way, ..."I wish it was the sixties, I wish we could be happy" and he should feel proud that the song is so enbraced. Everyone changes, but if I were Thom, I would feel like a phoney for not singing the original lyrics. He was "there" once and so is the person listening to the song/lyrics for the first time.

  • A valid perspective, sure, but I'm willing to buy what Thom's perspective seems to be: he feels phoney singing the original line. To be fair, he doesn't completely obliterate the lyric. It's nearly audible on the second pass.

I like to think he's living out the song, in a way; after all, the piece is bookended with, "The words are coming out all weird." With a lyric like that, why not grimace and slur through a line which doesn't feel right anymore?

  • A friend told me he said it because in the 60's hippie was in, and everyone screwed each other...so basicly it's just for fun yeah :P

  • he actually said he never meant meant that line in the press

  • this song its not abaut "I wish i could be happy" that's why thom in press said tath he didnt mean that particular line, now he sings it with a kind of repolsive voice because that the intension.

amaizing song and better play now.

  • nah.. hes just rat arsed.

  • If they're really not into this song anymore (which is fair enough) then why bother playing it? Surely there isn't that much of a clamour to hear these old songs at their gigs. I think most fans would be happy to hear whichever songs they choose to play at any gig other than perhaps a festival. And besides, if they feel that they must play something off the Bends there are 12 songs to choose from.

  • words that he wants to say,but then thinks again:)

  • i just reckon he forgets the words, ha ha thats it. no crazy new messages or anything like at

  • lol at him wailing throughout. legend.

  • so powerfull

  • where do i go i from here ?

  • thom really doesnt seem bothered with this. maybe theyre sick of doing it for like 13 years.

  • i reckon he was sick of the 'wish it was the 60s' lyric, he's grown up a lot im thinking so he hates some of the whiney lyrics he wrote in the past. its a guess...

  • actually he did regret writing those lyrics right aftyer the album was released. thats most likely why he mumbled them. such a beast

  • I strongly agree with you, he once said that he felt death was iminent in a recent interview. How could he wrote " I wish it was sixties?" when he was young?

But I still love the lyric "We don't have any real friends." lol, he slurred the words in this line.

"I wanna be part of the human race." lol, this lyric is so green, exactly what I felt now. Well, I am in my teenage period.

  • he said he felt death was imminent?! i meant that i think he's grown in that he's become happier with himself, especially after his low period during kid A sessions. That lyric would surely agree with a depressed mind, so i don't think he's mock the words if he still felt low... maybe the interview was from around the kid A sessions?

  • Ya, it was from thom's mouth. Well, he has grown up a lot and he's happier. I bet he feels so much older as he has becmoe a FATHER of 2 children. My parents said that they thought death was imminent since their forties. Same case applies to Radiohead, right?

  • but still, they chose 2 from the bends album to play.

    if there is some meaning.

"I wish it was the sixties, I wish I could be happy

I wish, I wish, I wish that something would happen

    ...

Where do we go from here

The words are coming out all weird

Where are you now when I need you"

  • Really nice to hear this old one...

  • baby's got the bends..... friends......hum uh muh uhm uh.... lol all hail thom :D

  • tom forgot the lyric lol

  • ...and it's sooooo funny )))))))))))

  • i'm impressed

  • ahhh bkn la wea

  • wena weon!! tenia que estar un compatiotra metio aca!! entremedio de tanto weon ingles

    wena!!

  • JAJAJAJ aca hay otro...Grande RadioHead y gran de Chile mierda!!!

  • he got asked a lot "do you really wish it was the 60's?" during inverviews, and apparently regrets to have ever written that line haha

  • Thom is singing like he is sick of singing this song. It's quite funny. Radiohead rules hard.

  • jesus I love the energy thom throws in at the end. this is perfect

  • I was at this concert and this song was truly incredible. everyone had been waiting around for hours before hand as there was a last minute venue change, and this song alone made it all worthwhile. (of course to hear all of in rainbows cover-to-cover was also monumentally good) The fact that the band are probably totally sick of playing it (or creep for that matter) does not detract from the fact that underneath a stunning liver performance, this is a great, great song.

  • liver?

  • Ok children no reason to fuss. I'm just saying that over bends and creep, songs like how to disappear completely and idioteque or national anthem are a particular delight to hear on live performances, have influenced my music in a deep way and I can relate a lot more to those as works of art than something like the bends or creep, as a musician , an artist and as a human being. But thats just me, you can love creep... really.

  • i think the fact that they can still play this song with the same bite and bile as they did over 10 years ago is awesome. i think the voice he puts on at 1:50 makes it even more acerbic and sharp. they played this at earl's court in november '03, which i was at, it was a friggin' anthem. 20,000 or so people all singing along. awesome.

  • Well yeah, it is a fan favorite thats a fact but ask thom what he thinks of the song(creep). He hates it, they all hate it. It opened doors and stuff, but try playing a song you don't like and are not particularly for a 1,000 times... you'll vomit just by listening to the first chords.

I did liked it at some point, but they've grown from creep and so do many fans of their music.

  • there is no way that Radiohead are past their live peak. This whole mini concert is incredible. Thom's just fucking around with his voice on this tune on purpose... the whole show was fun for them. Never expected that day to turn out the way it did. Few to no roadies, doing all the work themselves... been a while since they've played a show like this.

The band will always remember this one... can't want till they're back on tour.

  • Wow this takes me back. What an awesome tune! Great to hear them play the oldies. The Bends was their best album in my opinion. I have been a fan since Pablo haha. What I would've paid to be there. The energy. Wow.

  • It sounds like he hates the song, I agree to that. But I actually like Creep.

  • The band definitely hate this song, and creep, but that does not detract from the fact that they are bot great songs. The same is true of any artist - Monet destroyed hundreds of his earlier paintings, those that survive are now considered some of the most significant art in the world.

  • yeah, creep does suck. i was at v a couple of years ago, and there were so many meatheads there shouting for it, like it was the only song they knew. and they gave me funny looks for dancing to the gloaming? pah.

  • Oooh, if he would just try to sing good!!! I love Radiohead, but I don't like the way he ruings the song.

  • if they did what you want there would never be where they are today...this is refreshing and some one the best live stuff of theres in yrs....ive seen them 7 times since 97...cheers

  • Wow, never seen this performance before.. one of the best songs of one of the best albums ever.

  • i laffed my back off the first time i heard this from 1 ;46 to 1;52 ish they still great but past their live peak i think:(

  • nana nha nah. lol

  • haha what a south-park-ish voice around 1:50, thom! : D

  • this song fucking rules! are we gonna hear it on the US tour? i hope. i love to hear them play stuff like this. the bends is my favorite record of theirs. that's not to say i don't love the new stuff...i think in rainbows comes in a close second now. agh! radiohead! love it.

  • i love this song!

i cant believe they played it.

  • OMG! I cant believe they played this song!!! Wow!! It feels so good to hear it now that theyre the best band in the world. I can't fucking believe it.

  • Does anyone know why my comments aren't placed under the other users comment's which I replied to? I did press reply next to their username.

  • so everbody remember why they are they greatest band in the world?any questions?i fucking dare ya!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I don't they're the best, personally.

    But close.

  • I think you're wrong. They ARE, in fact, the best band in the world.

  • Thank you for ticking my opinion red.

  • Sounds fuckin awesome!

  • zarpadossssssssssssss!!!!

    looove Radiohead

  • It's a cutoff switch on the Telecaster along with a little Whammy pedal squiggle.

  • The cutoff can be seen on the version of Iron Lung from this show too.

  • does anyone know how jonny gets that crazy sound out of his telecaster at the filler bit just after the chorus?

  • Sounds like maybe a fuzz factory. Badass little pedals, google it
