This was Fred Silverman's handiwork: as daytime programmer at CBS, he was the one who created their "all-superhero" Saturday morning lineup in 1966, and every successful variation every season, until he left for ABC in 1975. Now, in 1979, he was NBC's president- and, trying to revive their third place Saturday morning schedule, he loaded it several of his "old reliables": Fred & Barney, The Harlem Globetrotters...and Daffy Duck.
In what bizarro alternate universe could Fred Flintstone possibly meet the Thing? Still, it had to have been better than the (then) New Scooby Doo Movies with lame "guest stars" that no kid could have possibly cared about seeing. ("Today's guest star: Robert McNamara!")
This is the reason american cartoons were shit until the late 80s. all adult references in these cartoons had been removed.
