This is so so cool!!!!!! At 1:24 and for several bars thereafter, the horns sound like car horns wailing on Motown streets. More melodious than actual car horns of course but it's highly evocative of car horns.
@thebottle51 your right, Martha and The Vandellas or the Marvelettes were on most of those tunes. I can tell that you were listening... much love and peace
According to Eddie Holland, Marvin heard him sing the song one time and said "Okay" as a sign that he was ready to record. He actually gives Marvin credit for turning the song into a gospel-soul mix saying Marvin "took it and moved it to almost a sanctified rhythm." Eddie didn't show him to do that. "Witness" was initially a blues song b4 Marvin recorded it.
It's possible the Tops were on here, but this was 10 months before they released their first single***I sure think it's difficult to sing a song, not knowing exactly when to hit the note***Thanks, do you have BABY-O by Marv Johnson, flip of ONCE UPON A TIME?
@srercrcr Yeah, it was the Tops. They were with Motown from 1963. Their first album, "Breaking Through" wasn't issued until the late 90's. Both groups also sang on "You Lost the Sweetest Boy" by Mary Wells, also an H-D-H production.
The Andantes NEVER sounded like 'THAT'! Their voices were rather muffled and sometimes...well, they weren't distinct. That's why they used them to fill alot of spaces and even bolster other backing voices during the years. They weren't 'distinct' unless you really KNEW!
As at the end of the song FLORENCE BALLARD of The Supremes is EASILY heard! Please get your facts right! It is The Supremes with The Four Tops on backing.
On the record, the Supremes (Diana, Mary and Flo), sang background. Then, the girls recorded the song themsleves, which was released in the 1980s on a compilation of unreleased stuff.
It is DEFINITELY the SUPREMES! You can hear 'em all. Especially FLO
AND
DIANE!
And the Four Tops!
The Supremes are ALSO on "You're A WONDERFUL ONE"!
It wasn't ALWAYS the Andantes. In THOSE days, it was whoEVER was around and who WANTED to be a part of each others' recordings! That was part of the 'fun' of it all back in the early days!
It's on record, I'm afraid, that the backing group here is The Supremes. Man, they rule!!

How'd you get this? Did you just strip out the vocals from the finished track, or...?
