Todd and Benny Greb have got to be the most musical guys out there. There is a line between being a drummer and being a musician. Todd and Benny are musicians.
Tod is GOD himself speaking to you through his drumming. Period. My top 3: Vinnie, Dave Weckl, Jojo Meyer, Steve Gadd, Micheal Smith, Benny Greb, Virgil, Nathaniel Townsley, Gavin Harrison, Simon Phillips, Marco Minnemann and check out a boy named Dylan Elise. And then give me a break about drummerz dude! : ) Whatta hell!
so between 1:58 and 3:24 is some of the craziest shit ive ever heard especially when todd starts playing a beat between the snare, bass, hihats and the china, while throwing some rack tom and floor tom hits in there, hes pretty fucking rad, actually i'd say incredible
The first song (from :43 to 1:58) is in 13/16 time - essentially a grouping of 8 and 5. I counted it evenly in my head like "1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 2 3 4 5", if that helps explain it. ;)
Interesting - is that what he says on the DVD? I'd have to count it group of 8, group of 5 just to stay sane with it.
RE: the time signature correction, I was basing my statement about it being in 13/16 on where the backbeat was falling (assuming the tempo was 1/4 note = 95). If you're saying that the tempo is 1/4 note = 190, then 13/8 is absolutely correct. :)
Either way, it's brilliant, fluid playing - I think we can agree on that! :D
@drumology2001 idk, i've never seen his dvd besides these clips, but i saw him at the modern drummer festival in 2008 and he played tears of joy. before he played it, he said it was in 13/8, and "not to attempt dancing to it, otherwise you will break your legs", lol. it doesn't really matter though, music is music, no matter what time signiture it's in. and no doubt, todd is a master.
please, someone tell me what's the first song that he plays, the one with the wonderful melody.. i wanna buy this record and listen to it all the time! it's fuckin' brilliant.. anyone that knows what recording it is on?
the song is "tears of joy" by jerry goodman. and i'm sorry to say, but i have no idea where to find this song. so if you ever find out, could you tell me?
Nothing short of THE best drummer at this point in time. Even who I considered the best of of the last 6-8 years, Deen Castronova of Journey, agrees in the new issue of Modern Drummer.
I saw this guy when he started playing with Styx. He's got incredible fluidity for a drummer.

Now this is a drummer with all BIG three: Technique, Balls and the most important MUSICALITY!
Almost all drummers today wants to be so fast and have best technique in the world, but they are losing the THING, Music...

Todd makes me want to pick up sticks and practice not throw them out the window and give up--that's why, imo, he rocks above all...well most all.
