  • This was my favorite part of this whole show! When I was little, I watched it alllll the time! xD I still wish I could have been a Riverdancer.

  • Is the language irish, welsh or celtic?

  • @celticspirits5

It's the Irish language. Oscail an doras is 'open the door' in Irish. Welsh is much different and there is no such language as 'Celtic'

  • I want this song! But I can't find it anywhere. :(

  • PROUD TO BE IRISH!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • i know that oscail an doras means open the door, but what about the rest? Anybody know?

  • @bgdancer100

Oscail an doras don tailleir fhidhleir

Oscail an doras don fhidhleir tailleir

Oscail an doras don tailleir fhidhleir

    Firrinneri fhidhleir tailleir

    Translated, it means

Open the door for the fiddling tailor

Open the door for the tailoring fiddler

Open the door for the fiddling tailor

The King's son-in-law is the tailoring fiddler.

  • @jannevr ok, but what is the soloists saying? are they just lilting or does it actually have meaning?

  • open the door

  • I like this song

  • I love river dance. I saw them several years back when they were just beginning,

I sat there just amazed at the talent. I always wanted to do something like that.

I started praise dancing after that and then ended up developing a style of dancing with flags that I really enjoy. thanks for letting me share my video and message.

    char

  • this is my fav ive known the words to this piece since i was 6

  • Somehow this never ended up on the soundtrack and I'm so bummed it didn't. :( I absolutely ADORE this piece!! :D

  • which year was this show?

  • Who is the second male soloist?

  • @Kennyboy1

    Morgan Crowley!

Look him up, he also sang Lift the Wings, he is AWESOME!

  • 5 people missed the like button here...

  • Listen to that guy lilt! It's hard to lilt like that when the music is going so fast.

  • Singers and dancers on stage at the same time for this number, interacting with each other.

  • I love this version of Riverdance best. It's not too flashy, the costumes are nice, the choreography is great, and the music has a good pace.

  • how is it possible that this version isn't available on itunes or a cd or anything? It's an outrage!!

  • @rbnhoodga i knw ive looked everywhere ...its just so dam catchy

  • ривер денс - это прикольно, рулит)

  • holy crap this has got be the BEST riverdance thing ive ever seen i went apirl 22 2010 it was my veryt first and i loved it with a passion!!!

  • Regardless of ethnicity if you can't dance...well you can't dance!

I'm black and sure I've said "Dude, you kidding me, you can't dance" to a white person a few times, yes I'm sorry for being rasict but did it ever start making them move ahaha.

I respect the Celtic culture and everyone else's,all kinds of people can dance

    all kinds of ways :]

  • what language is this. i want to know this!

  • @haui61 The song is Oscail an Doras: this is the Irish Gaelic version, while there is another in Scots Gaelic (not done by Riverdance/Anuna).

  • @haui61 Its Galic. Which is the original language of the Irish and celtic peoples. I Wish I knew what they where saying too though. Does anyone know?

  • @kardancer1 i have no idea what they say. i'm just a 13 year old german girl. sorry!

    lisa

  • @kardancer1 I think I recall someone telling me "oscail an doras" means "open the door".

  • @ImaginaryNightshade yeh it does, you can look up the full lyrics and translation with google :)

  • @ImaginaryNightshade right. it was mentioned in the 10th Anniversary record where Jean Butler commented on each piece. don´t ask me though what they say, I have no idea...

  • KaeLae I agree. There were too many changes made to the show, including my least favorite, COSTUMING. A lot of the costumes were to elaborate for me. I loved the costumes used in the NYC show.

  • Just curiously?

What is the story behind this dance?

  • Aw3some! <3

  • I agree with bwyfan19. I have seen them in Oberhausen two weeks ago. It's too bad they quit.

  • One of my fave numbers from the original show. Definitely one of the jewels in the crown that made up this show. I really hate that I will never see it live again.

  • @bwyfan19 I went to it live a couple of weeks ago! :)

  • @SphealPup i saw them yesterday! :D

  • That's awesome!

  • love Morgan Crowley!!!

  • I could kill the camera team, though!

With such glorious footwork, why film close ups of their heads???

  • @elizasparrow They are frequently spread too far apart from each other, hard for eye to follow, didnt know where to look. That being said... I love Irish Dance, especialy when they jump high!

  • @badback22 Indeed, as far as I know this dates from 2002 and HD was something that didn't exist yet (or at least it wasn't interesting enough commercially seen) then you'll have to get close.

Jumping high is indeed incredible, but it also takes incredible strength and endurance ;)

  • @weeardguy Ive watched it again and dont know why I complained, its just fine. The stage is enormous and impossible to fill and the audience on both sides had to see something. I dont know why I complained and I love it and I retract in full and grovel in mortification! :)

  • @badback22 Wow, I love your honest comment, but from my part I never took your comment as a complain ;)

I thought you were reacting to someone else who complained about the close-ups.

Well... it was probably the time of commenting (it was around 0:00 AM at my place when I wrote that, not the best time)

  • @elizasparrow Because those gorgeous singing lads need close-ups!

  • I prefer this version to the new one. And this is my ultimate favourite dance of the whole show.

    Love it!

    Kat

  • lovely

  • i lv this version soooooooo much :)

  • A troupe came into my town last year and I loved it, I've been looking for this number ever since :)

  • This is lovely.

I much prefer this version because of its subtlety - the newer one over-explains everything, taking away from the feel of the original show.

  • how can i find this on itunes ?????

  • I could never get enough of this!!!

  • Well when they say "A white doesn't have rhythm!" They never heard of the bodhran!

Let's just put this behind us!

You might like breakdancing and rap, I like step-dancing and celtic music. You don't like it? Leave.

  • @bodhran105 breakdancing and rap are cancerous tumors on the ass of music and dance!

  • how am i the racist? your the one calling black people the n word

  • why are you so racist? like stay out of society if you wanna be like this.

  • omg! Gaelic is so hard to understand!

  • How much do I miss this choreography! The new number just isn't as good ...

  • have only just started irish dancing..but this is fantastic. Am very much going to get my dancing shoes on.

  • Morgan Crowley's boyish grin and eyes that curl at 1:38 are soo adorable. He is too cute.

  • agreed :)

  • oh my god... I didn't know his name... I absolutely adore him.... !!!! I felt in love the first time I saw him!!! ahhhhhh!!!!

  • i love riverdance!

  • Oscail An Doras= Open the Door

  • They are singing in the Irish language (known as Gaeilge), however, most of it is actually ancient Irish mouth music, which doesnt actually make sense but makes for great music.

  • I think its so beautiful. I can't enough of it!

  • I Love this so much. I used to watch this when I was younger. This is so hard to find in stores these days

  • Sioux, Cherokee, Kiowa, Seminole, and Creek, as far as I remember... but that's not counting the intermarriage of tribes. :P

    LOL on the nonsense sounds!

  • It's Gaelic..it's my ancestors language!

  • mine too. This is my favorite perfomance

  • I wish this song was on the soundtrack.

  • when i hear the intro it reminds me of balamorie

  • I'm both Irish and Scottish, British and Native American, but the Gaelic coming from their mouths is what feels like my mother tongue... It's so easy to learn and say... and I love singing along as I dance to this... :D

  • Yes, I'm all those things too! What type of Native American are you? I'm Sioux, Cherokee and Blackfoot.

  • This is a song that makes wonder about my Ancestors. I am of Irish/scottish decent. The sounds that come out of their mouths don't sound Human. I LOVE Gaelic, but it sounds so Alien

  • They were probably Armenian based on some historic writings.

  • CLASSIC!!!!! :) :)

  • I'm Irish and Love this video and Riverdance!!.

  • This is the most awesomest video ever!!!

  • I love watching Derek and Morgan flirting with the girls, both the singers and then the dancers. They had so much fun, it seems. Morgan Crowley's huge smile! Glad they shared it with us.

  • They do seem like they are being flirtatious lol I enjoy listening to those two rather watching the dancing in this piece

  • Beautiful song btw

  • I totally igree with DeviousDeception!

  • Very cool and very folky. Unlike the americans, the irish know how to walk into new centuries without throwing away their great culture. But then again, America didn't have much culture to begin with. Riverdance is the lord of all dances.

  • yikes thank you for the kind words, don't flatter us too much now. Well I gotta get back to eating my greasy burger in front of some tasteless reality tv show, I might jump over to PBS to watch Lord of the Dance and imagine myself with some percentage of Irish heritage ;). Keep fighting the good fight brother!

  • everythingaustin, that was hilarious! well done! i agree with u. but whats sad is people forget that america is a mixture of all sorts of cultures and for deviousdecpetion to say that is quite sad. it's really quite a blessing that in america we can experience all different sorts of cultures. like for example im italian but i love riverdance cuz its so cool!

  • Jean Butler and Michael Flately were born in America ya know. So i guess that makes them Americans too...Americans do not through away their cultures.

  • i love riverdance! but i hate the quick edits - if theyre dancing i want to see the dance, i dont need torso closeups - especially since their torsos arent doing much XD

  • love it love it!!

  • Oscail an Dewrag <3333333333333 x 25000

  • Is it a language they sing on? And if it is what is it?

  • Gaelic (In this case Gaelige or Irish), I've also heard it sung in Gaidhlig or Scottish Gaelic. :-)

  • It's Irish Gaelic, and Oscail an Doras translates to "Open the Door". :-)

  • yay for mouth music!

  • Love it at 3:00 when the drummers cross and strike each others' drums.

  • Thanks for the translation.

My Irish friend only told me it meant"open the door", etc.

It' s great tune. I play a guitar version by Jerry Willard.

  • For those who are asking... here are the lyrics:

Oscail an doras don tailleir fhidhleir

Oscail an doras don fhidhleir tailleir

Oscail an doras don tailleir fhidhleir

    Firrinneri fhidhleir tailleir

    and in english:

Open the door for the fiddling tailor

Open the door for the tailoring fiddler

Open the door for the fiddling tailor

The King's son-in-law is the tailoring fiddler.

  • I'm fanatical about Riverdance :D I really hope to be part of this production someday! (hopefully it'll still be around!)

  • It'll be around for a long time. Riverdance is a huge hit, and it's almost safe to say that it revived the art of Irish dancing worldwide.

  • Awseme!!!!

  • This part is one of my favorites.

  • love this song so much! does anyone have a recording or something?

  • Are these actual words? this song is so cool its awsome!!!

  • Oscail an doras don tailleir fhidhleir

Oscail an doras don fhidhleir tailleir

Oscail an doras don tailleir fhidhleir

    Firrinneri fhidhleir tailleir

  • this is one of my favorites greta song great dancing!

  • I love this song, but I can never find the words to what they're saying after the beginning part... "Oscail an doras don tailleir fhidhleir

Firrinneri fhidhleir tailleir" ... what next?

    Love this, thanks for posting.

  • I sure love Morgan Crowley! :D (second guy that sings)

  • I love the Jean Butler NYC version of Oscail an Doras. In the Geneva show it's all watered down; the music is slower, and the choreography is simpler. I wonder why?

  • aileenpio; I agree with u! Could it be that this perfomance came after Michael Flatley left in '99? It seemed to me that when Colin Dunne took over, it was never the amazingly fastpaced energetic show it originally was!

While Michael Flatley had a huge ego; I def belive *he* was central for the energy & pace of the original Riverdance.

  • What you're watching IS the Jean Butler NYC show version, the show where Colin Dunne danced.

The Geneva version referred to is the latest version where JB and CD are loooong gone from the cast. And that features RíRá as the Oscail and Doras replacement, though OaD has since been returned to the show, in a watered down form. None of this has anything to do with Colin Dunne vs. Michael Flatley.

  • otherwise, you've got the music ine the riverdance'CD...

  • Thank you so much for posting this! It's one of my favorite parts of the show. I've recently seen the show live and I'm going to post my Oscail An Doras vids soon.

I still prefer the DVD version. The view is a lot better^^

  • Is there a recording of this song?!?!?!? I can't find one!!!! :( You will be any best friend FOREVER if you can find one. I can't find it one iTunes or Limewire

  • "Oscail an Doras" is also known as "Fosgail an Dorus" (Fosgail is the Scottish version). If you go to iTunes/Amazon and type Fosgail, you'll be able to find multiple covers of the song. They're lighter on the drums, heavier on the pipes and feature solo vocals instead of a chorus, but the tune is the same

  • I have it for you if you want, the sound isn't really 'full' but it's this piece :)

  • Oscail an Doras is the name of the dance

  • Wahhh, thanks so much - I LOVE it!<3

  • can you plz post the end bit of the show, were the russian dervish people are dancing with jean butler please, if you know what i mean lol :)

  • I love this part! Being a die hard Riverdance fan, though, i would like to comment that this is from Riverdance: The New Show, from 1996 or '97, and not Live from Geneva.

  • 1997 lol
