I do agree with that all people should be covered regardless of 'pre-existing conditions,' especially since I'm one of those. But I don't agree that it should be mandated. Here in Australia, we have Medicare, which covers visits to your GP, emergency stuff and so on. It even covers "elective surgery", such as knee replacements, if you can stand the wait. A large proportion of the population augment the universal Medicare with private health cover for about a thousand dollars a year.

Many European countries have a mix of private and public.

The best result comes from picking the bet of public and private.

The only difference is that they DO NOT WORK FOR PROFIT. Not only will it lower costs for everyone because the government, being such a large entity , can negotiate prices. My understanding of the public option is slightly different from what you said, but only slightly. From what I've gathered, proposed health care reform would make it illegal for insurance companies to drop people for getting sick, exclude them from coverage for preexisting conditions, etc. To spread the risk, there would be an "individual mandate" requiring everyone get coverage.

Health care is a human right. There are things that should not be profit driven, health care and prisons are two of them. The current system leaves 46 million Americans without any health care coverage. Eighteen thousand of those Americans will die this year because of that. I place each and everyone of those deaths at the feet of any politician that opposes a single payer health care system.
