  • Andrea corr sings this well too....such a beautiful melody..very complex!!!!!!! so satisfying to sing though!!!! thx for posting.x

  • Lovely version of a great song. Thanks for sharing,

  • Yes indeed, when... "she has my heart in thrall....No life I OWN....Nor liberty...For LOVE is LORD of all!" So true...beautiful song. Thanks for posting.xxx.When u love someone like this...u have no control over your thoughts about them... they govern most waking moments...I wish I had that feeling again!!!!!!!

  • Should be

"Nor life I own nor liberty

For love is lord of all."

Think about it. Thanks for posting this. Very pretty.

  • "Nor life I OWE nor liberty

For Love is Lord of all."

  • See, she's saying that she has no life or freedom beyond what is permitted by her "lord." It makes no sense to say "nor life I OWE." Even if that were correct (and it's not) what would it mean?

  • I have a music sheet infront of me.

It says 'Nor life I owe nor liberty For Love is Lord of all.'

  • Oh, I believe you. I have seen many like that myself. But errors in transcribing lyrics happen all the time. The modern version of the lyrics is "No life have I, no liberty, For love is lord of all," which at least conveys the proper meaning.

  • Click on the Mary Black version of the song on You Tube. Go to the right of the video clip where the details are of person who posted. Click 'more info' (blue text) the lyrics to the song will appear.

  • Yeah, I saw those. That's what my original post was in response to -- the lyrics posted by machree01. There are other errors in there, too, like "stares the bogwood fire." Huh? No biggie.

  • Ah sure, it's a trad song, it's better when it's free to change and suit the singer.

  • It's really supposed to be "spares" rather than "stares," (meaning she banks the fire, rather than stirring it up or putting it out completely). I own about 5 different versions of it and they all say that on the sheet music. I'm also going to have to mostly agree with nhmoore - I've always heard "owe" or "own." "No life have I" is just someone's rewrite so the meaning is clearer.

  • @duane56 I think you are right about this. Old music can ship some odd mistakes/typos, and pretty soon they are institutionalized and used all lthe time, and no one knows why! I am just beginning to sing this song, and my music does say "owe!" Makes no sense. The guy I sing with is singing the lead on this one, and I am singing a wordless backup, but will point this out to him.

  • van morrison and the chieftains version is really great also

  • This one's my favorite.

  • For my money,Margaret Barry, with her trusty banjo ,can beat the lot of them at this song. This well meaning effort doesn't even come close.

  • Gracias Mary Black y gracias también a machree01 por esta maravilla de canción. Soy un español que cuando la oigo me llena el alma de gozo.

  • A lovely rendition of a haunting tune. Sinead O Connor does a wonderful version also

  • Thanks for posting, that brought back so many wonderful memories. I first heard her sing in the 80's and have been a fan ever since.
