I've found this video sitting in my [home] office with knife-like pain in my right buttock. Just got up and tried the exercise with my Trigger Point Roller. OMG -- I pride myself on being very pain resistant but this hurt like hell, but in the 'right' way! Now, 15 minutes later, I'm sitting again in my chair and the pain in my right buttock is simply gone. Wow! THANK YOU!
Unfortunately foam rollers destroy lymph glandswhich lye directly under the skin and i am against them as they are too invasive for piriformis work. the piriformis is a deep external rotator and you have to go through the gluteus maximus to get to it. besides the real issue is with the insertion not the belly of the muscel and therefore it is impossible to get to with a roller.
@rockandrollmusicgirl while lyphatic ducts do lie underneth the skin in this region, glands do not., it seems god new how to design a body or evolution selected for it. you can choose
This is fantastic! I just had back surgery but am still working through sciatic pain from an apparently irritated piriformis. This is exactly what I needed to see.
If my sciatic pain is on the left side only, should I only work the left side only, or left and right sides? In other words, should I really be working the right side if I don't even have pain there? Will working the ride side AID in releasing the left side? Thank you!
this isn't always the problem when it comes to sciatic pain, it can be from many things, get it checked out by an athletic therapist if this technique does not help, stretch your glutes, hams and hip flexors frequently and always do both sides of your body with anything you do!!!
I appreciate anyone making videos to share with us about massage therapy. Although, this one kind of confusses me. I was taught this move in a Sports Massage Class. It's not how I've been taught to do myofacial release. I've been taught that myofacial release is palpating muscles from origin to insertion, in a slow deep movement. If anyone can give me any advice about my concern, I'd appreciate it. Thanks. =)
This video demonstration literally saved my ass. After a period of inactivity I took up running again, and injured my glute. I was in pain all day long and had a reduced range of motion. This roll was the key to loosening things up to the point I could actually start functioning again. I'm not 100% yet but at least I can move without pain. THANKS!
As much as I agree with the exercise loosening the piriformis, I believe it should be noted that the sciatic nerve runs through the piriformis muscle in some people.
Is it really a good idea for those people to be basically rolling about on the muscle and nerve? However carefully.
One would think that it'd simply loosen the muscle whilst aggravating the sciatic nerve, and I don't believe the largest nerve in the body really needs to be aggravated. It gets kinda pissy, Jai. :-)
You have to make sure you're doing this for the right thing. It is for piriformis syndrome or other piriformis problems this will work. I use tennis balls.
Way to Irritate the HELL out of the Sciatica!! Thats more Glute max! But Since A muscle can ONLY contract, or Relax or Stabilize. And Cant do ALL at same time only 1 at a time. You leaning on the muscle is forcing it to contract there fore cannot be Stretched! (Sherrington's Law II)
Sitting on a foam roller will Irritate the Nerve. Foam roller can do more Damage than good!
i have a herniated disk(L5 S1) but ive worked thru it with epidural steroid shot and weight training 4 days a week...have stopped the foam roller as it aggravates it.
Please let me know if anything has helped. I've also herniated my L5 S1 and have had all three epidural shots. I still have such tightening in my pirformis muscle and it leads into my calf muscle.
Great video. I started using the foam roll for IT band myofascial self-release, and discovered this same exercise through experimentation. I now use a tennis ball to get at my piriformis, though. Hurts like hell, but it really works. The elliptical drones in the gym are still trying to figure out why I'm rolling around grimacing on the floor, though. Anyways, thanks!
I cannot believe how wonderful this is. I have been dealing with sciatica for more than 25 years and this is the only one that worked. Even after a long 15 mile run which used to make me feel that there was nothing else I could do.
love the techniques, however i just got back from Doc today as my Piriformis problem, after a month, had to be addressed. i had been on Aleve as well. doc gave me a steroid shot in the bum, and taking the steroid pack over the next few days..

When I first tried the roller... I tried the recommended leaning on my side... the
result was a very very sore butt... Now I'm
trying the roller in just the upright position..no leaning.. and I'm getting some much needed relief.. I hope I can soon resume jogging

This is myofascial release? How many terms can myofascial release have?
And you managed to isolate your piriformis? Wow!! I find it difficult to do that with my 15 year trained hands! Amazing,..

I myself work out daily and also use an inversion table, but lately have been hit hard by this sciatica problem.
