Armond White is a tool. I've heard him on several movie themed podcasts and I've noticed one common thread with him. He waits until something becomes popular with other critics and simply takes the contrary position in a desperate attempt to drum up controversy. For a critic he is extremely thin skinned when it comes to taking criticism himself. Armond, it's not the color of your skin people hate. IT'S YOU!
@marbles will you please get your head out of the sand and wake up to what's real! This country has always been racial. Take me for example, I just made a racial slur in my previous comment. I was kidding though. . . . orrrr was I !
@ RiversJordan09 LOL TO THE FREAKIN' MAX! That's gotta be one of the best replies I've read in a long time! Dang...
I love Armond White. I think the man is exceptionally good at his profession. He's not one of those tippytoe guys, he says it like is. My way of thinking ... he's gotta really be speaking some truth, steppin' on some toes and hurting some feelings to get insulting comments like these "crybaby reaction" boohoos "whaaa...whaaa, I don't like what Armond said and now I'm gonna th
White, if it's true that you have enemies, do your really, in your heart of hearts, think race has anything to do with it? Did you ever think that maybe, just maybe, it's actually because you're a dogged, determined, condescending, irrepressible contrarian? Or even, as Roger Ebert once called you, a professional troll?
@Marbles471 Roger Ebert also said, "White is the epitome of the ideal critic. He's an intelligent critic and a passionate writer, and he knows a very great deal about movies, dance, and many other things. His opinion is valuable BECAUSE it is outside the mainstream." Stanley Crouch and James Walcott laud White as an independent thinker who "never ducked a hard question" and refuses "to slurp kool-aid at the trough with the rest."
If I recall correctly, Ebert said that right BEFORE he called White a "professional troll." He essentially said the equivalent of "I take it back. He's clearly being a contrarian on purpose."
I'm not saying White is completely full of it 24/7. I don't read him all the time, but I have no problem giving him the benefit of the doubt to an extent. But some of his positions just smack of being a provocateur for its own sake.
@Marbles471 I do know that he used those words to endorse some of White's work in (I think it was) early 2010 or maybe late 09. The fact is White is extremely knowledgeable about film history and context, which is refreshing given the quality of many critics today. He's demanding and no yesman and he seems to piss some people off, but I have yet to conclude he's simply contrary for the heck of it.
@RiverJordan09 Pick your head up from Armond White's lap for a second. This here video evidence proves that this "critic" needs to see an orthodontist. That's an example of ad hominem. (Did you just learn about ad hominems?)
His habitually terrible reviews and bad taste in film prove he's a fail critic. That's an example of a fact.
@BassHeadsProduction Your response to me just proves my point. Thank you. If you stated only facts, you might make a point worth rebutting, but your nasty streak negates anything you have to say.
btw, why don't you post a video of yourself so we can take a good look at your teeth? Seems to be a major issue for you. I'm sure it would be quite instructive.
It's got you all twisted up inside, so I feel sorry for you. Only you can change that, though. Until then, you won't be able to engage anyone on the merits of their argument or differing opinion. You will be reduced to name-calling, being demeaning, making sexual references, etc, etc. In other words, you'll be a garden variety YouTube Troll.
@mangusrah You're the Grand Wizard? I'm Stump Sisson, Grand Dragon of the state of Mississippi. I am also fond of "White's" film reviews despite his mud-blood ancestry.
Wait a minute. In a city as diverse as New York there have only been TWO black critics in the New York Film Critics Circle's 70 year history? And Armond White is one of them! That's worse than typical. LOL!
I'm looking forward to listening to the full interview.
That being said, I can't stand the race card, especially here. I didn't even know he was black until this very moment, but I understood how so many people could hate him. I find it hard to believe that he doesn't understand it, when he goes out of his way to be the dissenting voice, even when it's completely ridiculous. Even if he truly enjoyed Grown Ups more than Toy Story 3, he has to understand why people think that's insane.
Let me reference one of your least favorite films of 2010, Mr. White: "You're going to go through life thinking that people don't like you because you're black. And I want you to know, from the bottom of my heart, that that won't be true. It'll be because you're an asshole."
Ron's been duped. This guy is a charlatan and he's put himself forward as someone who knows something.
No matter.

Armond White has incredibly discerning taste. He can actually recognize real art. That is refreshing.

Of course this country's history is mired in racial conflict. So, to a lesser extent, is its present.
But remember, a rectangle isn't always a square.

@BassHeadsProduction When you engage in ad hominem attacks, you merely reveal that your intellect is no match for your opponent's.
Don't know what an "ad hominem attack" is? Here's an example: "BassHeadsProduction is a jerk and fail commenter."

@RiverJordan09 Oh sorry, didn't realize you were still face down in Armond White's lap. Take a breath bro, then accept the facts.
Fact 1 - Armond White has terrible teeth.
Fact 2 - Armond White has terrible taste in movies (EI: Raving reviews for Transformers 2 and Dance Flick)
Fact 3 - You're a fan boy of a terrible critic.
