@Sonlightfilms I fish Michigan! I actually fish all over the state. I fish from August til about the middle of October using skein under a bobber. 99% of my fish are hooked in the mouth. Usually I don't throw out numbers but I catch somewhere between 60-100 fish a year all on skein. During peak fishing, it's not uncommon to hooked 10-20 fish a morning on skein. So, if your fishing 10 hours and only hooking one legal, I suggest switching up techniques. You can bottom bounce skein as well. Try it!

As others have noted, only pacific-origin (Chinook & Coho, etc) salmon die after spawning. Steelhead, Browns, and Atlantic Salmon are all repeat-spawners, returning to the same streams for several years in a row.

That guy is not snagging. He is likely new to steelheading . I have taken lots of new guys out for steel and they set the hook on the first and every bump they feel. He was probably feeling the bottom and didn't know any better. And upwards jerk is not a sign of a snagger.
If he's fishing the bottom there might be bumps from large rocks or that can be false indicators so you set the hook. I see it all the time where I fish because everybody is fishing the bottom for steelies on the river. I mean it doesn't happen all the time but it does happen.

it's actually legal in some states. and salmon won't bite once they hit fresh water, their kidneys start to shut down and the only way to get em to bite then is to piss em off with a plug. but how the hell do you even snag a steely? they don't run as thick as salmon usually.
King (Chinook) salmon will strike at bait and lures, but reds (sockeye) almost never do. It's like one out of a thousand fish that do.
In AK, most rivers have an excess amount of fish that can and should be used for human consumption instead of going to waste. The harvest technique is irrelevant.
wanna watch snaggin? come up to the Mad river and watch those fly fishermen line drag the hell out of the steel-head and salmon. Been line draggin fish for years on all the coastal streams with hatchery's. He was barely swingin, I would have put on the 30lb test and put the hammer to them, Thats the thing about linedraggin, in the chops most the time!
I wouldnt be crying about this guy, you should be crying about the gillnets that are probobly less than a mile from where he is fishing. get a clue.(snagging is bad but it doesn't hurt fish nearly as much as the commercial or native gill nets)
I dont think hes trying to snag, he just cant tell a bite from the bottom. Usually a person rips to the side when snagging. Thats why he keeps looking over at the guy next to him-hoping for some advice I think. Could be wrong though
@dawheele1 I agree, way I fish for chromers is i'll let it drift with a float, but if im not using a float, maybe he has to much slack line out at the end or something and isnt sure if he has a fish on or maybe hes feeling his weights on the bottom, who knows. Why can't we make the penalties for snagging so huge that nobody would want to take the risk... In Alaska, an officer can arrest you and take all your gear, plus the catch, and on top of that you will pay a fine of up to $500.00.
It's near impossible to catch a sockeye in fresh water using bait or lures. They don't feed.

Sad thing is, steelhead are actually fish that bite. If you have to snag a steelie you're a loser. They bite damn near anything. Its a huge deal. The fish populations are dropping GREATLY. Its due to snaggers catching tons of fish and selling them for a profit. Also 75% of snagged salmon get off the line then about half of those die form infections or bleeding out.
Bullshit. The AK and BC salmon populations are as good as they were 50 years ago It's too much work to snag salmon and then try to sell them for a profit. If you take into account all the gear, the time, gas, etc, there's no profit in it.

King (Chinook) salmon will strike at bait and lures, but reds (sockeye) almost never do. It's like one out of a thousand fish that do.
In AK, most rivers have an excess amount of fish that can and should be used for human consumption instead of going to waste. The harvest technique is irrelevant.

wanna watch snaggin? come up to the Mad river and watch those fly fishermen line drag the hell out of the steel-head and salmon. Been line draggin fish for years on all the coastal streams with hatchery's. He was barely swingin, I would have put on the 30lb test and put the hammer to them, Thats the thing about linedraggin, in the chops most the time!

I wouldnt be crying about this guy, you should be crying about the gillnets that are probobly less than a mile from where he is fishing. get a clue.(snagging is bad but it doesn't hurt fish nearly as much as the commercial or native gill nets)

I dont think hes trying to snag, he just cant tell a bite from the bottom. Usually a person rips to the side when snagging. Thats why he keeps looking over at the guy next to him-hoping for some advice I think. Could be wrong though

@dawheele1 I agree, way I fish for chromers is i'll let it drift with a float, but if im not using a float, maybe he has to much slack line out at the end or something and isnt sure if he has a fish on or maybe hes feeling his weights on the bottom, who knows. I wouldnt call this kid snagging though, I've SEEN snaggers on salmon river and its tributaries, literally running up and down a river trying to chase them.

Why can't we make the penalties for snagging so huge that nobody would want to take the risk... In Alaska, an officer can arrest you and take all your gear, plus the catch, and on top of that you will pay a fine of up to $500.00.

It's near impossible to catch a sockeye in fresh water using bait or lures. They don't feed.
It DOESN'T matter HOW a fish was taken-what MATTERS is there is sufficient escapement and suitable spawning conditions for them to perpetuate the species,how,what, and who catches them has NOTHING to do with it.The guy who prides himself in ''catch and release'' can kill many more fish than the guy who flosses his two fish and goes home-who's the more ''ethical'' angler?

Sad thing is, steelhead are actually fish that bite. If you have to snag a steelie you're a loser. They bite damn near anything. Crawlers, leafworms, wax worms, salmon/steelhead/brown trout roe or egg sacks, spoons, spinners, plugs....for gosh sakes and thats just off the top of my head in about 10 seconds.

Sockeye and to a lesser extent, coho don't feed or strike once they're in freshwater. "Flossing" (snagging) is the only way to catch them.

Its a huge deal. The fish populations are dropping GREATLY. Its due to snaggers catching tons of fish and selling them for a profit. Also 75% of snagged salmon get off the line then about half of those die form infections or bleeding out.

Bullshit. The AK and BC salmon populations are as good as they were 50 years ago It's too much work to snag salmon and then try to sell them for a profit. If you take into account all the gear, the time, gas, etc, there's no profit in it.
The commercial guys net them by the thousands at a time and you're complaining about a guy that's harvesting them to feed his family? Do you have any idea what escapement is? There's an excess amount of fish in AK.
