the lighter should be turned a quarter turn to the right. doing it like he is increased stress across the less reinforced width.you want to use the narrow corner of the base as this way theres less chance of lighter breaking

he KEY POINT this video emphasizes that i never understood is the pressure upward you put on the lighter with your left index finger. you really gotta wedge the lighter in between the bottle cap and your index. it is NOT all about the amount of force you put on the lighter with your RIGHT hand. more about the upward force than leverage with the other hand.

If you do it with a cheap lighter, you can easily break the lighter. You have to grab the lighter closer to the bottle and use more muscle. Other than that, this technique is awesome. I can't remember how many times I have bought some caronas and not have a bottle opener on me...
