I am shaving my head today due to my locs falling out. I also have a patch of hair that had not grown in over a year. It has stayed the same length for over a year. :( After my scalp is healthier, I am going to start free forming. Do you have any suggestions?
@TheSugarylez See a doctor STAT and if they don't pay attention see another. That sort of hair breakage is often a sign of hormonal, allergy or autoimmune issues which when left alone can be extremely serious to your overall health. Think of your lost locs as a canary in a coal mine and work to find the answer to the problem. I have a blog post talking about this. I'd recommend an allergist, endocrinologist & dermatologist as a starting point. Good luck!
Hey Sweetie, thanks alot for this video and the link you provided. I'm in the beginning stages of growing a fro and realized my scalp wasn't in the best condition. Thus began my youtube searching......And LORD Jesus, i did not realize the work and patience involved in taking care of your hair and scalp for healthy hair growth, and my hair isn't even an inch yet...i don't know how you women do it....but thank you :)
@blackpisces87 YES!!!! I have several product reviews in my playlist and will have another for Pravana up later this evening. There are many good brands. I recommend a good salon quality shampoo & conditioner made for colored hair and Keracare conditioner for less frequent deeper conditioning.
hi, thx for your series. i could type a book about my experience with SD but I will just say thanks for your time effort and videos!!! The information you are giving is so true and real. Thanks for putting it out there.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I was so ready to go to the barber shop today and buzz my beautiful locs because of my scalp. Although I've been battling this issue all my life now and went natural because of it, I am now willing to withstand more trial and errors to try and get to the root of the problem (no pun intended lol).
@CesarWilly08 Any product will if you use too much and/or don't rinse it out. Always dilute your shampoo first before applying and the chances of using too much go down and rinse, rinse and rinse some more.
@bustitwydeopen365 I used to be against conditioner but the health of my locs was too important so now I do condition. I just make sure I dilute or distribute evenly and rinse well. I also clarify every other month. I use a regular conditioner that is Ph balanced to my shampoo and not super thick and clumpy. Oils seal moisture but moisture comes from water and the diff in my hair since conditioning has been huge.
@bustitwydeopen365 I have used many conditioners. I always use the same conditioner as my shampoo and look for Ph balanced products. I only use the medicated shampoos close to my scalp. I like Enfanti and KMS a lot. I also plan to try Keracare as it has some amazing reviews. But the brand I like may be different from what your hair needs. I try to buy small bottles to test anything new and avoid drug store brands though.
Here's my update after following some of your tips consistently for a solid week-I have NO FLAKES along my hairline and no itching. I was afraid to try the shampoos every day but my hair did fine. I alternated between Head and Shoulders and a Jason shampoo with Sal. Acid. I can not believe I am seeing such an improvement after struggling with this for so many years. Thank you so much!
I wanted to add--i rinse my hair every day anyway--I started braid locs the first week of October. My plan is to only apply the shampoos you suggested along my hairline where I'm having the problems. The rest of my scalp is fine. My entire hairline is not affected--it's patchy.
Thank you so much for putting this info out. I've been struggling with flakes on my scalp for YEARS. The problem started when I was relaxing and was all over my head--I was so embarrassed to go to the shop because it seems they hated to see me and my nasty scalp. It's gotten MUCH better since I've been natural (2007) BUT my hairline is still a troubled area. I'd describe it as mild based on what you've said, but it's stubborn. Will try your suggestions.
@lasoreal I would go back and try them again and this time, no scrubbing hard and use conditioner. Ketoconzole shampoo is VERY effective for many people if used correctly, if you used it correctly then go BACK! SD can cause scalp infections, hair locs and general misery. There are many great medications out there. I will use ketokonazole shampoo if I can't get my med but I use a topical steroid to get my SD under control and keep it under control with diet, gentle products and occasional meds
@lasoreal I've had some horrible derm visits complete with tears. I have had Kaiser put certain docs on my chart as non-refurrals. I've paid for a good doc rather than fight with one on my plan. But your hair IS important and anyone who doesn't understand and respect than needs to be replaced and possibly reported to their supervisor.
@quotidianlight I can see why. There's just so much to it, so many choices and options. I like that you aren't a stickler for "natural". Sometimes using chemically created, or altered, things (mineral oil, coal tar) are the only things that work. In an ideal world, it'd be great to not need anything so harsh. But until actual cures are found for these problems, gotta use what we have!
@onyxfaith Exactly, I'd rather have healthy locs with some medication and gentle products than all natural products and bald spot. The best you can do is limit as much as possible while still being effective. So P & S liquid has mineral oil and an acid in it. I would only use it to cut through extreme plaque so medication can get into the skin and stop once the medication kicks in. I used it twice last year but needed it. I will also have a vid on diet and SD
@quotidianlight are there any products out there that can be used every other week? I have SD. And I dont know how I feel about washing my hair every day or every other day.. I've been told by many locticians not to wash your hair every day b/c constant washing and re-twisting can weaken the root of the loc. One of the loctisians has SD as well. So what do you do?
@6Boomerang Short answer... NO. All dandruff shampoos and prescriptions require regular use 3-5x a wk for several weeks. After you may gradually lesson use to maintain remission AFTER remission has been achieved. In addition, because oils aggravate the condition, frequent washing or rinsing will (at least weekly), most likely, always be needed even if the medication is reduced or you use prescription topicals.
