I was once about .. 30 meters or so away from a really powerful strike. The sound you hear when you're super close to a lightning strike is WAY more terrifying than the lightning itself. It's just an unbelievably hard and hollow sounding FHONK kinda sound. Super short sound as well, and it feels like it's inside your head. Really terrifying. Makes you instantly dizzy as well. Hope I don't experience that ever again.

There was this one time (not too long ago) where this massive thunderstorm was in our area..

I was on the couch, I saw a HUGE (and YES I mean HUGE) flash of light, for 2 seconds.. after that, BOOM! A gigantic, huge, atomic-like, thunder strike struck a tree near us. Our power went dead, our cable was blown, and my mothers car battery was screwed.

For those who thinks it's fake, it's not. The lightning itself did not strike in view of his camcorder. The image of the lightning reflected off the wall of the lens housing of his camcorder then to the lens. That is why the lightning image is in a strange spot. If he had a lens hood, the image would have never appeared. I have a lens hood on my camcorder which prevents this from happening when I'm filming storms.

The actual lightning bolt hit behind you somewhere. You captured a stepped leader. Its a stream of positively charged ionized air and its harmless on its own. Lots of these come down before a strike and the first one to hit something negatively charged causes the return stroke, or visible lightning strike. We cannot see stepped leaders with our eyes, but a cameras eye can pick them up. I filmed a couple of them too.
