I was at the Joshua Tree concert tour in Atlanta. Will never forget the experience as U2 ended with "40". All 80,000 people in attendance kept singing as they left the building. As they scattered into the parking lots and down streets, still singing. into the MARTA station all were still singing. Most unbelievable concert experience of my life. Thanks U2.
Bear in mind, always when U2 play 40, the Edge and Adam swap instruments. Edge plays bass, and Adam play's Edge's guitar. That's why the sound's a bit different.
He did say that Winona is the most beautiful and the best actress. Is that why you got so vengeful? Or was it something directly about me??? i saw you saying a quote straight off Reality Bites to a presenter recently about not being able to handle compliments..........
This song brings back memories. I love that I have grown up with Bono and the boys. I consider myself so fortunate to have shared the planet with them.
@beowulven the bible says that yes it's true, but it was a wise man's ruse to find the truth in a situation, they didn't actually cut a baby in two. they gave him back to his birth mother.
and i never called you a moron, i said you were being ignorant. now that you have context on the verse you quoted, hopefully you can stop.
@beowulven first off, the account you are referring to was way before christ showed up. second, i've never heard of anything remotely like christians cutting a baby in half. thirdly, you must just be trying to goad me so i'm done with your stupidity.
This song is so inspirational. This song & Psalm 40 have deepened for me not from a place of lack. On the contrary, in a positive, uplifting way. It has deepened my faith and trust.
This song & Psalm 40 , if possible, has deepened & taken a deeper place for me since Bono's injury...When I would be reading Psalms and come to Psalm 40, I couldn't help but think of Bono's injury and his recovery in thoughts and prayers. Bono and U2 have always been in my heart, thoughts and prayers.
I'm so glad to hear of Bono's recovery and U2s return. Bono looks and sounds great. Welcome back
Psalms has always been close to my heart & inpiration to me. In books of scripture you find God speaks and reaches out to man. But in Psalms you find King David/man speaks and reaches out to God. Through King Davids pain, suffering, despair and sickness King David never gave up his unwavering trust in God. And in the end he was always delivered.
40 Truly is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
I stumbled on this song last week. I can't believe I've never heard this song before. This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Psalms/ King David is one of my favorites...Bono/ U2 in different songs have done many things; taken my breath away, touch my soul, make me laugh, smile, sing along, dance. But this song made me cry...Psalm 40 King David is giving thanks to God for the times he has rescued him, taking him out and gave him a new song...
magnificent. Larry is solid as a rock, adam and edge swapping their instruments, and the pauses they added between verses and chorusses.. really COOL. I love this song anyway.
For many many years '40' always closed the band's live shows. In the days before mobile phones arms and lighters were held aloft. Long after the band had left the stage the crowd would carry the refrain in to the night sky. Always brings a lump to my throat.
I affirm that He is there. I also believe the study of logic and quest for knowledge are not antithetical to religion but in long-run complimentary, if not affirming. I hope your studies have brought and will continue to bring you enrichment and satisfaction.
I hate to feed the troll, but, even though I'm agnostic and have an inherent distrust of religion, I do feel something I can't explain every time I see U2 live. Religious people may call that something "God." I'm not willing to make that leap because I can't prove it. I believe only in facts. All I know is, U2 is one of the very few (if not the only) bands that can make you feel like you are part of something that is bigger than yourself.
And that is one of the greatest facts I've ever known.

You can't argue with religious people, they are either brainwashed since they were young, and/or have a weak state of mind. They blindly accept anything that their holy book says, this is how they were raised. How do you get more followers? Exploit their fear.. Just tell the people they go to a bad place if they don't pray to God... unfortunately a lot of people fall for it. Religion holds people back in their personal development and joy in life.

Just because you can't explain something doesn't automaticly mean it's done by some kind of God. But if you are willing to blindly accept that everything you can't explain has to do with a higher power, you are free to do so, but please don't indoctrinate others. In my point of view, nothing is wrong with leading your life based on logic instead of blindly accepting anything.
I have seen U2 several times and always come away from it feeling better about the whole world. It is like a religious experience....regardless of what one believes they have a good message for everyone----be kind and try to help someone --- lead a life that means something.
I agree with OhReallyNoWai and ndawgnelly. Whether you believe in a higher power or not, seeing U2 live can be a "religious" experience. Although, I have to say, I didn't feel that as much on this last tour as I have in the past. That's ok, because I know they couldn't possibly summon that kind of power every single night of every tour.
I did feel it during "Your Blue Room" and "Moment of Surrender" though, for sure. :)

The Edge and Adam switch because when they were recording the CD "War" it originally ended with "Surrender." They finished recording and adam went back to ireland. Bono decided they did not like how the album ended and Bono and he edge made this song together out of Psalm 40, and since adam was gone the edge played his guitar on a bass setting, and now he just plays bass
edge and adam always switsch instruments when they play this song to end the consert. iam not sure but I think they never play 40 in europe just only in the states
I'm a little confused...Edge with Bass Guitar? How long is he playing on it?:s...anyway it's a great song and it proud for U2 to say good-bye one by one.
What can i give back to god, for the blessings he poured out on me? what can i give back to god for the blessings he poured on me? I lift high the cup of salvation, it is a toast to our father, i'll follow through on the promise i made to you, Hear my heart
Brilliant !

You waited for something that isn't there.
Go study and replace faith with knowledge and logic.
Religion only makes you ignorant and unable to reach full potential.

You have to work for your own luck.

Amazing performance of an underrated U2 song. U2 has such a wonderful way of writing spiritual lyrics without coming off "cheesy"

you're right but in this case it's God's words :) it's Psalm 40 :)

Yes, good point. God writes the best lyrics in the book of Psalms. The song "Drowning Man" from War also has some quotes from Isaiah. Very nice.

this song is based on Psalm 40 of the bible
