Well, Patti is absolutely amazing no matter what anyone says, she has all the components of a Broadway legend and is also extremely nice and down to earth in person. Patti is Queen. Period.
Ever seen a Bipolar person in the midst of a break-down manic episode? This should be the poster in Times Square of what its like! I should know because I have it! She is perfect!
Not my favorite Rose, not the best singing, and not the best acting, but I do really like Patti's interpretation. Her Rose is deliciously unhinged, it's disturbing, it's wild, it's crazy, and I find myself really liking it. You can really see her psychotic break from reality here...and perhaps its not exactly what was supposed to happen as written, but I think its interesting.
Though I'll always prefer Angela Lansbury and Bernadette Peters, I can't help but like Patti's version.
I heard this on the radio yesterday and I was shocked and appalled. Watching it is only slightly less disturbing. I also saw her performance in the theater. By the time she did this, I just wanted a drink...or several to be honest! Having seen this show several times, live and on the screen, with all the usual suspects, I have to say that I find this interpretation absurd. Unless the whole thing is occurring in a mental institution... and they forgot to give Rose her Thorazine! Patti was a divi
Yes, her acting in this seems quite monotonous, but I wouldn't go so far as to call her wooden. I mean granted, her singing will always be incomparably more impressive than her acting skills, but having seen her in different things I would say she's emotionless. Besides, live shows change every night, maybe this one was on of her off nights.
This has got to be the most inspirational performance I've ever seen in my life. This was the first Broadway show I had the pleasure of attending. Miss Lapune had me leaving this show in tears, it was so incredible XD!!
i dont understand why everyone is harping on Patti's acting. I don't see anything wrong with it. Is she Meryl Streep? no. but is she fake or wooden? i don't think she's that, either.
this has been performed so many times she had o find something different to make it work. And she did. I saw the performance and though I am no huge Patti fan, she got to me....
She won EVERY single award that a person could possibly win when doing a Broadway show.....and it was based on.. not only this brilliant number...but her entire interpretation of Rose and many other numbers. Pure brilliance.
I love how some of you are judging her performance based on a youtube clip. How many of you actually saw her live? Her performance was riveting, shocking, and an emotional experience for myself and many others.
I have seen 4 times live (Anything Goes) in 87 and 3 more times in Concert. She has perfect diction(if she ever did a "patter" song you could here it! She is the BEST voice on BWAY now...Ryan Murphy compared Lea Michele's to Patti's as a once in a generation VOICE
@DivaBehavior There are other versions of this preformance that she has done a little different check that out if you want but I disagree with you that she is wooden, how the hell is wooden? I have never seen her wooden.
Sometimes I love Patti, sometimes I don't like her. I simply don't like this performance. It just seems like a bunch of yelling and actions that aren't backed up by any inner justification. To each his own.
Yup, it's amazing that someone so talentless could have won a tony much less had a 40 year career while you sit here making brilliant criticism. There is something so unfair in this world. = )
@broadwayloverny10 I understand your point of view. Patti takes sometime to get use to. When I first heard her I felt the same, but I just got use to it and it sounds amazing :) I feel that way about somethings of hers also but most things I love. very Patti Fan feels the same.
What I like about her Rose's Turn, is the fact that she completly shows break down the character. She isnt focusing on sounding pretty the whole time. I do like Bernadette Peters interpretation, but I do not compare her and Patti. They are both in a league of their own. I just like Patti's more.
Too bad this clip does not have THE best moment. When LuPone looked back at the audience at the very end of the show, I could not breathe. I have seen all the Roses [except Merman who was NO actress] and that moment made up for LuPone's inconsistencies and indulgences. It was astounding. Overall, no one tops Tyne Daly. Her acting was FEROCIOUS and she also inhabited the character best.
@DivaBehavior running all over the stage doesn't make a performance. stillness on the stage is a skill that very few actors have and Patti LuPone has it.
Patti, like Bette Midler works from the outside-in. That makes many of her performances seem artificial, fake, and wooden. I find that the actresses who are the most truthful, lifelike, and stunning -- Bernadette Peters, for example (and also actresses like Glenn Close and Meryl Streep) -- work from the inside-out. This makes the actions come from somewhere within. It's compelling and it's entirely human.
@DivaBehavior Replying to a comment from a year ago isn't a norm for me, but I couldn't help but vehemently disagree with your appraisal of Lupone's acting. In case you don't know much about her training, she was actually taught to "work from the inside-out," as you put it. Lupone becomes a character, rather than acting like one: Rose Horvick was mentally unstable, and having a nervous breakdown at this point. With this in mind, I find Patti Lupone's rendering to be more truthful and lifelike.
@TheBohemianTenor I don't know...she's really not still at all. Actually, throughout this, she seems to be moving around rather haphazardly. I mean, at "All your life and what does it get you"...what is she doing? I don't know, to each their own. But I felt like she should've been...stiller...
Hm. Not really sure if this is a way to say "you're gay" or a slap. Either way, English is more effective.
About bootlegs, If possible, these performances should be readily available. You'd only restrict placing this on youtube if you want personal profits or are some uncritical theater snob.
@TheAlaskanPirate No, "WOOSH," as in my last went over your head. You missed the inside reference. Which is odd, considering you're a fan of the show and LuPone.
YOU stop embarassing YOURself. Real artists DO know what it means to be an actress. Patti LuPone's acting is impeccable, ESPECIALLY in this role. That is how real thespians perform. Her eyes do reflect her characters thoughts because thats the way people are. The truth is from within and I see the truth in her eyes everytime she steps on a stage. If that is not acting then none of Broadway's leading ladies have ever "acted".

@DivaBehavior I disagree, I've seen most of the videos of her doing this role, and I must say that she has a very deep emotional connection with the character. Sure she is very theatrical with the character, but I think did an excellent job with Rose and the Tony was well deserved.
Now that was a nervous breakdown. Now I know why she had that diva fit, with her mindset and energy so coiled. She did not need distractions. She is a force.
Her "style" of acting (histrionic, over-the-top indication) has died out... thank God. She is not an actress in any sense, but she is a very gifted performer. There is a difference. It's what makes the distinction between Joan Crawford and Joan Allen.
I dunno...I think Patti's an actress...I mean, don't forget she is classically trained, and she is a very serious performer...however, I don't consider her *the* actress on Broadway....I think she's a very talented actress, but she'll always be known for her voice, and less for her acting skills...as far as acting, Bernadette Peters and Angela Lansbury are the Queens of B-way. No one else comes close to their levels of talent.
@DivaBehavior I believe it's called classicaly trained Juliard. You can't get into that school unless you can act. She once had terrible diction, but is now KNOWN for supurb diction. But your entitled to your opinon.
Great performance, to be sure! I wish she'd been given some more dynamic choreography, though, along the lines of Bette Midler in the TV movie version. But I guess they wanted the focus to be on the internal emotion rather than spectacle, and I respect and admire that too :)
Well, Patti is absolutely amazing no matter what anyone says, she has all the components of a Broadway legend and is also extremely nice and down to earth in person. Patti is Queen. Period.
